Real Madrid close to signing Bellingham, says report

Real Madrid look set to sign this summer’s top transfer target. Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Spanish giants are in the “final stages” in securing Jude Bellingham’s signature. Despite his age, the 19-year-old Englishman is widely considered to already be one of the top midfielders in the world.

Romano Tweeted about the news on Wednesday morning. “Real Madrid are close to complete deal to sign Jude Bellingham, confirmed,” proclaimed the transfer guru. “Negotiations are progressing to the final stages. New meeting has been scheduled to complete the agreement with Borussia Dortmund.”

Romano also added that Real wanted to complete the signing this month, even before the window technically opens. This would help avoid any late bids from other clubs or a possible change of heart by the player. The reigning Champions League winners completed a similar $85 million move for Aurelien Tchouameni last year. However, Bellingham will cost more than the Frenchman. It is expected that Real is set to shell out at least $110 million for the England international.

Real Madrid look at Bellingham as adding to midfield core

If the deal is completed Real would have an incredibly talented and young central midfield. Along with Bellingham, the Spanish giants already also have Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, and the aforementioned Tchouameni. Valverde is the oldest of the impressive quartet at just 24.

Real certainly have a history of having a top group of midfielders. Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro (now with Manchester United) previously completed arguably the best midfield trio in soccer. While eventually replacing these stars was certainly no easy task, it seems as if Real have successfully completed the challenge.

Midfielder was the most sought-after player in Europe

Bellingham was being courted by most of the top teams in Europe. Practically every big club on the continent was interested in signing the teen. Liverpool seemed like a solid fit for the midfielder, but the Reds previously backed away from a potential move. Real have seemingly won the race to sign Bellingham against top opponent Manchester City.

Why are there so few US goalkeepers who are good with their feet?

It wasn't that long ago that US goalkeepers were a common sight in the Premier League, playing first-team soccer week after week. Goalkeeper Brad Friedel made 450 Premier League appearances across several clubs including Liverpool, Tottenham, and Aston Villa. Tim Howard made 399 appearances in the Premier League, which included his time at Manchester United […]

30 years of MLS: Why it’s time for the excuses to stop

If I had a nickel for every time I heard an American make an excuse for MLS by saying “Well, the league isn’t as old as other leagues,” I’d be a rich man. Launched in 1996, Major League Soccer is celebrating its 30th season this year. In that time, the league has grown to become […]
