Graeme Souness departs Sky Sports after 15 years as pundit

Sky Sports confirmed Graeme Souness did his final Premier League broadcast as Liverpool defeated Tottenham on Sunday. The former Liverpool midfielder and manager spent 15 years at Sky Sports following 20 years as a player and 20 years as a manager.

Souness made a broadcasting name for himself with his ‘no-nonsense’ style of punditry. On repeated occasions, viewers saw Souness as outspoken, but that did not hinder his analysis on Super Sunday coverage. In fact, Souness gained fame on social media for his repeated criticism of Paul Pogba, nominating him as a selfish player. Yet, Pogba disregarded those claims.

Sky Sports delivered a tribute video to Souness in his last bit of coverage on Sunday. It highlighted some of the major moments of his time on Sky, which included butting heads with fellow pundits Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Thierry Henry and more.

Sky Sports director of football Gary Hughes said he and the rest of the Sky team will miss what Souness brought to broadcasts.

“The insight and winning mentality he brought to our viewers as a result of his years of experience as both a player and a manager have been invaluable to our coverage,” Hughes said. “We wish him all the best for the future.”

In regards to what the future holds for the near-70-year-old Souness, he said he has “a lot of things coming up” in the near future.

“I’m involved in my DEBRA charity and on the 27th of this month, I’ll announce the challenge I’m getting involved in. But it’s been great so thank you to everyone.”

Despite losing Souness, Sky Sports retains a talented pool of pundits and analysts. American fans will be familiar with some of those, including Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher, both of whom feature on CBS’s coverage of the UEFA Champions League.
