Ronaldo scores to equal Platini record in Euro 2016 match

Lyon (AFP) – Cristiano Ronaldo equalled French legend Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in the European Championship finals with a bullet header to give Portugal the lead over Wales in their Euro 2016 semi-final.

The three-time World Player of the Year rose highest to head home Raphael Guerreiro’s cross and open the scoring in the 50th minute in Lyon.

Ronaldo then teed up Portugal’s second as his shot was turned home by Nani.

The Real Madrid star was taking part in a record third Euros semi-final and took his tally for the tournament to three.

Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal reached the final of Euro 2004, once at Euro 2008 and three times before a semi-final exit to Spain at Euro 2012.

Platini scored all of his goals at the 1984 Euros, which France won on home soil.
