Following the upcoming game against Stoke City, Neil Warnock will step down from his post as Huddersfield Town manager. The journeyman coach arrived at Huddersfield in February 2023. He guided the side to safety in the Championship after sitting seven points adrift of it in March. It was a remarkable turnaround for Huddersfield, which sat in 23rd when he arrived.
Huddersfield Town expressed its gratitude for what Neil Warnock was able to do in his short time at the John Smith’s Stadium. The club is off to another sluggish start in the 2023/24 campaign, but things are starting to take a turn. After losing three of the first four games of the season, Huddersfield has won its last two games.
Still, Warnock and the Huddersfield executives are ready to embrace a new path. Huddersfield Town Chief Executive Jake Edwards issued nothing but praise for the 74-year-old manager.
“I must start this statement by, on behalf of everyone at the football club, expressing my huge gratitude to Neil and his assistant, Ronnie Jepson, for the incredible job they have done at the club over the last six months,” Edwards said.
“Keeping this club in the Sky Bet Championship, given the position the team was in when they arrived in February, was nothing short of amazing, and built upon their already lasting legacies at this club as a management team and, in Ronnie’s case, as a player too. They are both, undeniably, Huddersfield Town legends, and have cemented their positions in this club’s history.”
Huddersfield Town says goodbye to Neil Warnock
After two seasons in the Premier League, Huddersfield Town has struggled in the Championship. In the two seasons after relegation from the top flight, Huddersfield finished 18th and 20th. In true Championship fashion, the club narrowly missed out on promotion in the 2021/22 season. Then, this past season, it was back to relegation struggles.
Warnock has ample experience leading clubs to Premier League promotion. He did so with Sheffield United, Queen’s Park Rangers and Cardiff City. His longest managerial spell was with the Blades. Generally speaking, his stints only last a couple of years.
That was not even the case with Huddersfield, where Warnock is departing after less than a year. Warnock did say he is not retiring, but just stepping away from Huddersfield. The English manager says he accomplished what Huddersfield set out to do. However, the club has other plans to secure promotion to the top flight in three years.
