Lionel Messi will sign a new contract at French club PSG for one additional year. Currently, Messi’s contract with the Parisians expires at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. Also, Inter Miami looked to be the leading candidate to acquire Argentina’s World-Cup-winning captain.
However, that plan seems to be on hold. French daily newspaper Le Parisien, which operates out of Paris, Messi’s team agreed to stay at the Parc des Princes for one additional season. According to Le Parisien, Lionel Messi’s agent, his father Jorge, met with officials at PSG during the World Cup about chances of staying at the club.
Nothing is official as of yet. The Argentine is still celebrating his World Cup triumph and has a well-earned vacation. However, upon returning to Paris, Messi will complete the deal to extend his stay in France.
There, he links up with longtime friend Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. Of course, the last time Messi faced Mbappé was in that World Cup Final when the two combined for five goals and each tucked away a spot kick in the penalty shootout. This season, that front three combined for 30 goals and 21 assists in 14 games played. PSG sits atop Ligue Un as one of two unbeaten teams in domestic play left across Europe’s top five leagues. Napoli in Serie A is the other.
Messi plans to stay at PSG for one additional year
The reveal of Messi remaining at PSG for one more year puts a shock to MLS. For a time, it appeared that Major League Soccer and Inter Miami were getting the World Cup’s Player of the Tournament. More than that, MLS wanted to get arguably the greatest player of all time.
However, Le Parisien argues that Messi’s World Cup performance showed he can still lead teams to new heights. This was Argentina’s first World Cup title since 1986. PSG hopes he can help the French side to its first Champions League title.
