Inter Miami faced significant departures at the end of last season, leaving their squad considerably thinned for the 2025 campaign. However, Lionel Messi is set to receive a major boost as the MLS side secured the signing of a promising South American young star.
Players such as Leonardo Campana, Matias Rojas, Diego Gomez, and Facundo Farias all left the Florida-based club, and Inter Miami struggled to find adequate replacements. With the transfer window open until April 23rd, the club made another significant move.
On Tuesday, Inter Miami announced the signing of Allen Obando on loan until the end of the 2025 MLS season. The 18-year-old striker arrives from Ecuadorian side Barcelona Sporting Club, with an option to buy once the loan expires.
Obando’s move to Inter Miami marks a promising step in his career. A rising star in Ecuadorian soccer, he made his professional debut at just 16, appearing in both domestic and international competitions for Barcelona. In 23 appearances, he scored four goals and provided three assists, showcasing his potential despite his youth.
Speaking to Inter Miami’s official website, Obando shared his excitement for the new chapter in his career: “I’m excited to have the opportunity to continue my career with a new challenge at a great club like Inter Miami. I’m ready to get to work, continue growing as a player, and help my teammates and the club fight for our objectives this season.”
A key backup for Messi and Suarez
Inter Miami has started the 2025 season strong, with seven wins and just one draw from eight games. However, Messi’s ongoing injury concerns and the absence of a natural replacement for Luis Suarez have prevented the team from establishing the same dominance as last season.
Fafa Picault and Tadeo Allende have filled in at forward, starting to make an impact on the pitch. Yet, the team has still lacked a true central striker to provide a focal point in attack and relieve the pressure on Suarez, who turned 38 this year.
Obando appears to be the ideal player to address coach Javier Mascherano’s needs. Standing at 1.89 meters (6’2″), the young striker could fill the void left by Campana and offer a physical presence up front. He also provides an option to rest Suárez throughout the season, allowing the veteran striker to manage his workload more effectively.
