Julian Alvarez sets expectations for Argentina teammate Cristian Romero’s potential move to Atlético Madrid

Now, as Atlético looks to strengthen the squad for next season, the Argentine striker has spoken about the possibility of reuniting with national team teammate Cristian Romero in the Spanish capital.

Romero, currently the captain of Tottenham Hotspur, is playing a pivotal role in the club’s Europa League semifinal run. However, Spurs have struggled in the Premier League this season, sitting in 16th place, with their chances of qualifying for European competition next year dwindling.

With Tottenham underperforming and Romero’s contract entering its final two years, transfer rumors have linked the Argentine defender with a move to Atlético Madrid. Speaking with Diario AS, Alvarez was enthusiastic about the potential addition.

“Hopefully Cuti Romero comes—he would help us a lot,” Alvarez said. “Atlético Madrid is a family. It’s more similar to Argentina than the Premier League.” Alvarez’s comments reflect the tight-knit chemistry of Argentina’s national team, which has been a core part of its recent success. It’s that same environment he hopes to foster at the club level by recruiting Romero.

Romero hints at La Liga ambitions

Romero has yet to make a decision about his future, but his recent comments suggest that a move to Spain could be on the horizon. In an interview with Argentine journalists Esteban and Gaston Edul, the 26-year-old center back expressed interest in joining La Liga.

“I’ve yet to play in La Liga. I’d love to be there because it’s the one top league I haven’t played in yet,” said Romero, who has previously played in both Serie A and the Premier League. Though he clarified that no formal conversations with his agent have taken place, Romero acknowledged that a summer move is not off the table.

“I haven’t spoken with my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. In my mind, it’s always about growing and looking for new places to keep improving, but there are still a few months left before we talk about that.” According to Transfermarkt, Romero currently holds a market value of €55 million. With the summer transfer window approaching, his future is expected to be one of the storylines to watch.
