Fittingly, the 2017 version of the competition sees the Group Stage, which starts this week, expanded from 8 teams to 16 with 4 groups of 4 teams now competing for 8 Quarterfinal places. Madagascan Ahmad elected African football chief

Addis Ababa (AFP) – Madagascar’s football chief Ahmad Ahmad was elected president of the Confederation of African Football Thursday, ousting veteran leader Issa Hayatou after 29 years in office. Ahmad won the election in the Ethiopian capital by 34 votes to Hayatou’s 20, official results showed. Delegates cheered and pumped their fists in the plenary hall after the result was announced. Yaoundé (AFP) – Issa Hayatou, born a prince and emperor of African football for three decades, has been at the centre of scandal — but never wounded — for much of his life. The 70-year-old Cameroonian, seeking an eighth term as head of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in an election on Thursday, defied his royal roots early on when he chose sport as a career. “It was a scandal in my family. Abuja (AFP) – Ahmad Ahmad insisted Thursday he can bring widespread, meaningful change to African football if he unseats Issa Hayatou as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Uproar in Nigeria over federation boss’ CAF pick

Abuja (AFP) – The head of Nigerian football’s governing body is at loggerheads with his executive committee after he endorsed Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad to be president of the Confederation of African Football. The Nigerian Football Federation said it had called a meeting on Tuesday to distance itself from Amaju Pinnick’s position and instead throw its weight behind the incumbent Issa Hayatou. Johannesburg (AFP) – South Africa sports minister Fikile Mbalula Monday denied a Confederation of African Football statement that President Jacob Zuma was backing incumbent Issa Hayatou in the CAF leadership race. A CAF statement made the claim after its president met Zuma at the weekend ahead of the African Super Cup match in Pretoria between Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa and TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo. CAF boss Issa Hayatou facing challenge

Libreville (AFP) – CAF executive committee member Ahmad Ahmad said Friday he will challenge long-serving Issa Hayatou in March for the presidency of the African football body.  Cameroonian Hayatou, 70, has run CAF since succeeding Sudanese Abdel Halim Muhammad in 1988 and is seeking an eighth four-year term. The CAF confirmed in Libreville meanwhile that Hayatou was standing for a new term through to 2021.
