<p>AC Milan winger Rafael Leao is set to release a book on his personal story as a soccer star. Entitled <em>Smile</em>, the book will cover a plethora of topics regarding the Portuguese playmaker. This includes his meteoric rise as one of the top wide players in the world, but also his affinity for music and fashion.</p>



<p>With the book now available for presale, Leao recently sat down with <em>Corriere della Sera</em> to discuss a series of subjects. Of course, the book was talked about, but the soccer star also made some interesting admissions revolving around his career.</p>



<p>For starters, Leao does not appreciate how much emphasis is now on statistics. Forwards are essentially critiqued based solely on how many goals they score. The winger was asked directly about his ability to score gorgeous goals but also claimed that there is much more to his game.</p>



<p>“Football today is just statistics. And I don’t like it,” <a href="https://www.corriere.it/sport/calcio/serie-a/24_marzo_04/rafael-leao-intervista-ab1dc9aa-d980-11ee-8821-7991a0cc0deb.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Leao. “Football is magic, joy. It makes me angry that people only think about numbers. If you have a bad game, but then you score, they say ‘Wow.’ I’m not like that. Because people have to have fun. So I have to have fun, too. I’m for beauty.”</p>



<h2>Winger says his ‘future is at Milan’ amid transfer speculation</h2>



<p>Along with addressing his distaste for statistics, Leao also spoke about his future. The winger was previously the subject of intense transfer speculation during the most recent summer transfer window. Nevertheless, the star eventually stayed with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/ac-milan-tv-schedule/">Milan</a> and even signed a new long-term contract.</p>



<p>Despite the fresh deal, Leao is still rumored to be a target for several top teams come summertime. One club, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">Paris Saint-Germain</a> will likely continue to be linked with the Portuguese star in the months ahead. Superstar Kylian Mbappe looks almost certain to join <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> this summer and the French giants will need a replacement. PSG is expected to talk to Milan regarding the winger. </p>

<p>Nevertheless, Leao has proclaimed that his future lies with the Italian team. “My future is at Milan. I’m here and I still have a four-year contract,” continued Leao. “Milan helped me when I was in a very difficult situation, they were close to me. I don’t forget, I’m loyal. I arrived as a boy and here I grew up as a man and as a footballer. My head is here.”</p>



<h2>Milan star Leao has a point regarding the importance of statistics now</h2>



<p>Leao’s comments regarding an extreme emphasis on statistics certainly have some validity to them. Scoring goals is the most important thing a player can do on the pitch. However, players can also positively and directly influence matches without necessarily scoring and assisting goals.</p>



<p>Attackers who link up with teammates, pass well, and help out defensively are also important as well. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>‘s Kai Havertz specifically falls into these categories. The German may not score tons of goals, but he tactically fits in well with manager Mikel Arteta’s system.</p>



<p>PSG may also have to look elsewhere for a potential replacement for Mbappe. Assuming that Leao is off of the board, the Parisians will have to go to plan B. Fellow <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> star Victor Osimhen could very well be the club’s next real target.</p>

Rafael Leao recently stated that he intends to remain with AC Milan in the future and admitted to not enjoying the emphasis on statistics.


<p>It’s been a tough week for the Rossoneri as supporters question what’s missing from AC Milan on the pitch.</p>



<p>In the game against Newcastle United, the Rossoneri came away with what feels like empty-handed, while the Magpies preserved a clean sheet and took a valuable point back to Tyneside. After being humiliated 5-1 in the Milan derby at the weekend, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/ac-milan-tv-schedule/">AC Milan</a>’s first UEFA Champions League encounter in 2023-24 might be summed up in an often-used statement, “All that was lacking was a goal.”</p>



<p>From a purely results-based perspective, this was not the best way to kick off what promises to be a very challenging group. Especially as Paris Saint-Germain have already established themselves as early frontrunners with their <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/psg-at-the-double-in-the-second-half-to-beat-borussia-dortmund-20230919-WST-457256.html">2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund</a>.</p>



<h2>AC Milan came close but were missing something</h2>



<p>Coach Stefano Pioli may draw a lot of encouragement from this performance and use it as a springboard for future success. The problem is that there are certain areas of improvement that need attention.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/sensational-inter-grab-bragging-rights-with-huge-derby-win-20230916-WST-456725.html">5-1 loss to Inter</a> last weekend shook the 2021-22 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> winners to their core for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it seemed to highlight the defense’s unpredictability, which had been suspect following last year and this summer’s exhibition games.</p>



<p>Against the Nerazzurri, who repeatedly exposed a transitioning Milan, the team looked like amateurs for the entire length of the match. Additionally, every time Simone Inzaghi’s players advanced, they seemed to have a good chance of scoring.</p>

<h2>Missing from AC Milan: Addressing attacking woes</h2>



<p>AC Milan needs to address a star who has so much untapped potential: Rafael Leão. With the weight of expectation on his shoulders as AC Milan’s finest player and one of the few true game-changers, he must not disappoint.</p>



<p>He was Pioli’s best bet to secure all three points in the first half against Newcastle. The Portuguese is still in his early 20s and has steadily improved statistically over the last several seasons. However, his mistakes and subsequent shifts in body language are often quite telling.</p>



<p>The 24-year-old winger must become aware of his newfound leadership responsibilities and the weight placed on him to make game-changing plays. </p>



<p>In addition, we can’t talk about the offensive struggles of the Red and Blacks this season without bringing up Olivier Giroud.</p>



<p>With four goals in five games in all competitions, the stats show that he is the team’s leading scorer so far. But the worrying stat is that only one of those goals was scored during regular play and the rest were the result of penalties. The veteran’s knowledge and normal clinical finishing may be useful, but he can’t be overused this term as well.</p>



<h2>Important lesson to learn</h2>



<p>After the disappointing outcome of the Derby della Madonnina, it was crucial to see Pioli’s squad dominate and generate several scoring opportunities against Newcastle.</p>



<p>The obvious dominance shown on the field made victory the only proper outcome. The Rossoneri were lacking one key ingredient, though, and that was a goal.</p>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">UEFA Champions League</a> play necessitates capitalizing on opportunities, scoring goals, and allowing the other teams in your group to play catch-up. Instead, AC Milan may have an uphill battle after just four or five games.</p>

<p>AC Milan has <a href="https://www.acmilan.com/it/news/articoli/media/2023-06-02/comunicato-ufficiale-rafael-leao" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">confirmed</a> that Rafael Leao has signed a new contract extension to remain with the club. The news is particularly important considering that the 23-year-old star’s previous deal was set to expire in 2024. However, the Italian side has now tied down their key player until the summer of 2028.</p>



<p>Along with the contract extension, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/ac-milan-tv-schedule/">Milan</a> has also reportedly included a release clause. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is claiming that Leao’s new deal has a release clause worth about $188 million. This massive stipulation will most likely ease Milan’s fears that they will lose Leao to another team.</p>



<h5>Massive teams ready to pounce before deal</h5>



<p>There has been speculation concerning Leao’s future for months now. Because of his precarious position with Milan, major clubs expressed interest in Leao. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid have all been linked with Leao in recent months.</p>

<p>Despite the interest of other teams, Leao previously reiterated his desire to remain with the club. The Portugal international told <em>Sky Sport Italia</em> of his wishes just last month. “I want to stay here at Milan, yes — but there are some things to resolve,” <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11989219/I-want-stay-Rafael-Leao-sees-future-AC-Milan-starring-Champions-League.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Leao. “I’m still under contract for one more year. We’re in talks.”</p>



<p>“I feel at home at AC Milan. I’m so, so happy to be here,” continued the winger. “What matters most now is that we’re in the [<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Champions League</a>] semifinals. It’s a great season and I want to continue helping the team.”</p>



<h2>Rafael Leao deserving of massive contract with Milan</h2>



<p>Leao has become one of the most important players for Milan since he arrived in 2019. The tricky winger helped I Rossoneri&nbsp;collect the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Serie A</a> title during the 2021/22 season. He was even named in the Italian league’s team of the year. That same season, he won the award for Serie A’s Footballer of the Year.</p>



<p>Although Milan dropped down to fourth in the Italian top flight this season, Leao has continued his impressive play. The Portuguese playmaker racked up 14 goals and 15 assists throughout various competitions during the current campaign. Milan will finish their season off with a home match against Verona on Sunday.</p>

<p>Chelsea wants to land Rafael Leao, and it tempted AC Milan with offers including either Christian Pulisic or Hakim Ziyech. This happened last summer, when the Portuguese was coming off a player of the year performance in Serie A as Milan won the Scudetto. </p>



<p>According to James Horncastle of <em><a href="https://theathletic.com/4516679/2023/05/15/ornstein-gundogan-leao-pulisic-liverpool-loans-berrada/?source=twitteruk">The Athletic</a></em>, Chelsea valued Leao at around $108 million. At the time, Leao had one year left on his contract at Milan. The previous season saw him score 11 and assist 10 in Serie A play. He would have fit in well as either a striker or left wing, his two primary positions. </p>



<p>To help meet that cost, Chelsea wanted to offload Christian Pulisic or Hakim Ziyech. Ornstein reports that Chelsea’s initial valuation of its own players came down to meet that of the singular Leao. Regardless, Milan did not bite. It was too late in the transfer window. Moreover, Leao’s contract at Milan had a massive buyout clause of around $150 million. </p>



<p>Recently, Leao committed his future to Milan. He signed a deal that runs through 2028, and Leao will now make around $7 million per season.</p>

<h2>Chelsea misses out on Leao despite Ziyech and Pulisic offers</h2>



<p>That denial of the summer bid for Leao did not fully diminish Chelsea’s interest. In the winter, when the Blues were on a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/latest-chelsea-transfers-not-at-fault-for-aimless-spending-20230114-WST-415145.html">record spending spree</a>, Chelsea approached Milan again for Leao. The club wanted to know if Milan was extending its contract with Leao. Fast forward a few months, and that contract is ready.</p>



<p>For Chelsea, it still does not have the answer at the striker position. Plus, Todd Boehly and the Chelsea hierarchy face the task of taking care of a bloated squad. With <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/pochettino-agrees-terms-to-become-new-chelsea-manager-20230514-WST-432840.html">Mauricio Pochettino taking over</a> for next season, he will surely have a say in what players arrive and, importantly for those like Ziyech and Pulisic, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/chelsea-may-use-two-players-in-swap-deal-for-joao-felix-20230509-WST-432149.html">who leaves</a>.</p>

<p>After defeating the standout Italian leaders in the first leg, Milan looked to advance past Napoli to reach the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> semifinals for the first time since 2007. In that year, Milan won the Champions League. </p>



<p>Napoli has been near unstoppable in both <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> and Europe this season. However, if any team has had Napoli’s number, it is Milan. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/milan-defeat-napoli-again-this-time-in-uefa-champions-league-20230412-WST-428152.html"><em>I Rossoneri</em> defeated Napoli in the first leg</a> and went to Naples to win in the league, 4-0. Although Milan did not win on the night, it did enough to advance. </p>



<p>A 1-1 draw at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium was enough to get Milan through to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League. </p>



<h5>Leao bosses the first half</h5>



<p>In the first 45 minutes, both sides had chances. Most of those fell to Napoli, with the hosts blitzing Milan out of the gate. None of Napoli’s chances, though, were exceptional. Many fairly tame shots rolled in from Kvicha Kvaratskhelia&nbsp;or the Napoli midfield. On each occasion, Mike Maignan dealt with any attempt.</p>



<p>The first great opportunity game just after 20 minutes. A reckless challenge in his own area by Napoli defender Mario Rui on Milan forward Rafael Leao yielded a penalty. While Leao underwent brief medical attention, Olivier Giroud stepped up to the penalty spot. However, France’s all-time leading scorer sent a tame effort towards Alex Meret, who <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSportsGolazo/status/1648407784961232896" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cast the shot aside</a>. Then, six minutes later, Meret again got the better of Giroud. The Frenchman was in practically alone, but the trailing leg of the goalkeeper <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSportsGolazo/status/1648409011186978816" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blocked Giroud’s attempt</a>.</p>



<p>Rafael Leao propper up Milan to a lead with a phenomenal run in the closing stages of the first half. After Tanguy Ndombele lost the ball, a one-man counterattack beat four Napoli defenders. Leao picked up the ball 30 yards from his own goal. He dribbled forward through the Napoli defense. Once he found himself in Napoli’s penalty box, he squared the ball to Giroud, who finally got his goal.</p>

<p>Defensively, Leao had his handprints on the game, too. A sliding challenge on Hirving Lozano denied the Mexican a goalscoring opportunity. Despite claims for a penalty, the Polish referee correctly deemed <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSportsGolazo/status/1648411553048453120" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Portuguese got to the ball</a> before making any contact with Lozano.</p>



<h2>Milan withstand Napoli pressure to advance in Champions League</h2>



<p>In the second half, Milan sat back. It welcomed Napoli’s forays forward, and Napoli could not take advantage for the first 20 minutes after the restart. Kvaratskhelia lifted two shots over Maignan’s crossbar, as did Hirving Lozano. Milan took its time, taking Napoli’s fiery pace out of the game when it could.</p>



<p>Clear headers from several Napoli players failed to test Maignan. Then, Napoli had a major opportunity. A handball from Fikayo Tomori inside his own area yielded a penalty for the hosts. However, just like Meret saved a penalty at that end of the field, Maignan stopped Kvaratskhelia, keeping the two-goal lead on aggregate.</p>

<p>Napoli did eventually score in the tie. The only problem was that Victor Osimhen, back from injury just for this tie, scored in the 92nd minute. Napoli only had one more attempt going forward, but lost the ball to a goal kick, and time expired.</p>



<p>Now, Milan will play the winner of the other tie in its bracket. With a lead after the first leg against Benfica, Inter Milan could set up a Derby della Madonnia in the Champions League semifinals. Last time that happened was in 2003. </p>
