Analyzing The MLS Playoff Race In Detail

There’s about a month to go in the MLS season, which will wrap up at the end of October. That means playoff races are reaching their apex, as the field is set for the November tournament that is the best of what the league has to offer. MLS doesn’t have promotion and relegation – and no, it’s almost certainly not happening in your lifetime – the playoffs function as the alternative drama to the race against the drop. Some would say it’s better drama. David Villa marveled at the playoff system, saying at the MLS NEXT launch in New York ... Read more

Sporting Kansas City 0-3 D.C United (Photos)

D.C United fired themselves to top sot in the Eastern Conference, following a rampant first-half that saw them claim a routine 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City. Goals from Fabian Espindola, Chris Rolfe and Perry Kitchen came in an eight-minute burst, meaning that the game was all but over just after 30 minutes had been played. Here are the photos from World Soccer Talk photographer Mark Shaiken:

Be Bold Jurgen: Pick These Players for the US Men’s National Team

Tomorrow Jurgen Klinsmann will announce the roster invitations for the U.S. national team camp.  These players will make up the eligible roster for selection for the January 29 friendly against Canada as well as possibly the February 6 World Cup qualifier in Honduras.  Usually, the January camp (loving referred to as “Camp Cupcake”) is a time for the national team to experiment with fringe players; it gives the coaches a chance to see young players who could one day work up significant playing time or older players who have earned a last chance at a cap.  With the camp occurring ... What Your Team Needs to do to Win MLS Cup 2012

Tonight the road to MLS Cup 2012 begins with Chicago hosting Houston in the Eastern Conference 4/5 game.  Over the next month ten teams will battle to determine who is the best team in MLS this season (at least, the best playoff team) and based on the regular season all of these games are must-see TV.  While match-ups do matter in the playoffs almost as much as talent – playing the right team at the right time really helps – every one of the following teams has a goal they need to achieve to advance to the trophy.  If your ... Henry’s Magical Goal Takes Down the Crew

When you have seen a world class striker perform many times, either on television or in-person, you think you have seen that player do everything.  Then they score an amazing highlight reel goal that makes you scratch your head and you remember their greatness.  Thierry Henry is that player. In the mid-week early afternoon game against the Chicago Fire on July 18th it was the kiss off the inside of the near post and in after a Sebastien LeToux cross that he settled off his chest. This time it would be inside second half stoppage time that got the 17,000 ... Read more

Weekend Results Tighten Eastern Conference Race

Injuries, an international break, and a bevy of good matches gave MLS fans a number of games to watch Friday and Saturday.  With the number of games to be played dwindling, every match-up takes on that much more importance, and this weekend the results shook up the Eastern Conference standings. On Friday, a back and forth match saw the first place team grab a point in the last minute as Sporting Kansas City drew the Houston Dynamo 1-1.  Despite dominating the run of play early, the good Dynamo midfield was able to bottle the home team’s passing game while Brad ... New Coaches and Same Results for MLS Teams

For Toronto and Philadelphia, the “international break” was an opportunity for renewal and revival.  Both teams had miserable starts to the season but both still were in shouting distance of fifth place in the Eastern Conference.  For the Union, the Nowak era was loudly coming to an end as popular players were slowly being shipped off as the head coach kept trying to remake the team in his image (see Earl’s analysis here).  Toronto’s woes were even more embarrassing: a year after beginning the implementation of the Total Football style Canadian edition, the Reds set a record for most losses to ... Streaks Continue for Two MLS Teams on Wednesday Night

There were only two Wednesday MLS games this week and they seemingly had little in common.  The results, however, were all about streaks that were on the line in the games.  Both streaks are amazing in their own way and both are continuing at least through the weekend. The early game saw the Montreal Impact earn their first MLS road point as they held DC United to a 1-1 draw at RFK.  While the point was a cause of celebration for Montreal, it was a source of discomfort for the home team.  DC United has now gone 87 games without ...
