A Convert’s Journey to MLS: A Review of Dallas ‘Til I Cry

While it most certainly was not the first, Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch set the tone for the soccer fan autobiography. Launching him to fame (and gaining Arsenal two fans in my household), the famous books details the passion and heartbreak of being an Arsenal fan. Since its publication in 1992, it has launched many imitators as other authors have turned their own soccer experiences into compelling (or not so compelling) novels. For the American fan/author, the field is more open, as unlike their European counterparts most Americans can write about overcoming the inbred American hatred of soccer to embrace the ... Read more

MLS Quarterfinals Leg 2: Review Of Highlights And Lowlights

GOOD: Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy/Forward) – Landon Donovan completely dominated the Salt Lake defense in Carson to push his Galaxy into the MLS CUP Semifinals. His three goals and one assist turned the game on its head and buried Real, ending their hunt for the league championship. This game was just another chapter in the amazing career of Donovan, the best player in MLS and USMNT history. With his career on the line, he not only stepped up, he excelled. This is the trait that has marked his entire career. When Donovan is in the spotlight, he fine tunes his ... Read more

FC Dallas’ Season Ended By Seattle Sounders; Match Highlights [VIDEO]

FC Dallas at Seattle Sounders on Monday night was just what the doctor ordered after a weekend of relative blowouts in the other three MLS Playoff Conference Semifinals. If 0-0 draws can be considered classics, the Dallas and Sounders clash surely must qualify with its frantic pace, controversial calls (or non-calls depending on who you ask), and almost-goals. Despite winning the Supporter’s Shield, it was by no means a done deal that Seattle would edge out FC Dallas (despite the foregone conclusion Alexi Lalas and Taylor Twellman seemed to have already made during ESPN’s broadcast of Sunday night’s other Western ... Analyzing The MLS Playoff Race In Detail

There’s about a month to go in the MLS season, which will wrap up at the end of October. That means playoff races are reaching their apex, as the field is set for the November tournament that is the best of what the league has to offer. MLS doesn’t have promotion and relegation – and no, it’s almost certainly not happening in your lifetime – the playoffs function as the alternative drama to the race against the drop. Some would say it’s better drama. David Villa marveled at the playoff system, saying at the MLS NEXT launch in New York ... Read more

MLS ’13 – The End of the Western Conference’s Dominance

For the past three years, the gulf between the two MLS conferences has seemingly been as deep as the Grand Canyon.  In 2011 and 2012, the East’s representative in MLS Cup was Houston, a convert from the West.  The last time MLS Cup featured an original Eastern Conference team was 2008 when two teams from the East played for the championship (those silly meaningless geography days).  In discussions of the best teams in MLS, the conversation has naturally gravitated from who would come out of the West. The dominance makes sense in a number of ways.  Los Angeles has taken utmost ... Read more

The Eliminated: Who Are You Rooting for in the Playoffs?

In MLS, 56% of teams made the playoffs this year, meaning your team had a pretty good chance to make at least the 4 v. 5 game of the playoffs (except you, Toronto fans, sorry).  Of course, at the end of the season, 44% of teams didn’t.  Some just fell short, like Montreal and FC Dallas.  Some were a little farther away.  But the fact remains that if you are a soccer fan and your team didn’t make the playoffs, even these tantalizing match-ups can be at times hard to watch as you wonder what if. Except that the playoffs ... Read more
