Raphael Varane has officially announced his retirement as a player. The legendary defender joined Italian side Como this summer after leaving <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> as a free agent. Despite various offers, Varane opted to sign a two-year deal with the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> newcomers.



The center-back, however, never actually featured in the Italian top flight. Instead, the Frenchman unfortunately suffered a significant knee injury in his debut with Como during a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/coppa-italia-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">Coppa Italia</a> match. Varane managed to play only 23 minutes before suffering the setback. 



The injury was supposed to keep the former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/france-national-team-tv-schedule/">France</a> international out of action until at least the beginning of 2025. As a result, Como removed Varane from the team’s official Serie A squad list for the 2024/25 season. Nevertheless, the star has instead opted to call it quits at the age of 31. He is expected to remain with Como in a non-playing position.



<h2>Defender picked up over a dozen trophies during his career</h2>

Following news of Varane’s retirement, Real congratulated the defender and pointed out his importance to the team. “Raphael Varane will forever remain in the hearts of all Real Madrid fans as one of the greatest center-backs in the history of Real Madrid and for always representing the values ​​of our club,” the team said in a <a href="https://www.realmadrid.com/es-ES/noticias/club/comunicados/comunicado-oficial-retirada-de-raphael-varane-25-09-2024" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a>.



Varane also earned 93 total caps as a France international since making his debut as a teen in 2013. He played every single minute of the team’s triumph at the 2018 World Cup in Russia as well. The center-back was included in FIFA’s official Team of the Tournament for his stellar performances.



“In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible,” Varane posted on social media. “Incredible emotions, special moments, and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”

<h2>Injuries, including recent one, play a role in Raphael Varane retirement</h2>



While widely regarded as one of the top central defenders of his generation, injuries became an issue for Varane in recent years. Since joining United in 2021, the Frenchman missed nearly 50 total games due to various setbacks. This does not even include the recent knee injury while with Como.



Back in 2023, Varane suggested that the sport was becoming “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5793107/2024/09/25/raphael-varane-retires-manchester-united-real-madrid/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dangerous</a>” because of fixture congestion. FIFA and UEFA have expanded multiple tournaments in recent years, putting extra strain on the top players. Several players and coaches have since hit out at the governing bodies due to the issue. 



Manchester City star Rodri even suggested that players could soon <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/rodri-players-close-to-strike-to-combat-fixture-congestion/">go on strike</a> in protest. The midfielder subsequently suffered a significant knee injury just days later.

The 37-year-old coach previously completed his playing career with the Italian side in 2023. Prior to joining the then Serie B team, Fabregas starred for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a>, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a>, and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/monaco-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Monaco</a>. He managed to collect silverware at all four of these major former clubs.



Following his retirement from the pitch, Fabregas transitioned into coaching with Como’s U19 team. The Spaniard, however, was asked to take over the senior side in November of 2023 on an interim basis. He could not offiically become Como’s senior head coach at the time because of a lack of UEFA Pro coaching license. 



As a result, Fabregas could only manage the club for one month. He then completed the rest of the 2023/24 campaign as an assistant coach under Osian Roberts. Nevertheless, Fabregas only lost one of his five total matches in charge of Como at the time. The Blues eventually earned promotion to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> after finishing second in the second-tiered division.



<h2>Fabregas previously joined Como as minority investor</h2>



The Spaniard, however, now has the necessary paperwork in order to manage Como. Team officials have now officially named Fabregas as their new head coach on a four-year deal. Along with becoming Como’s new manager, the star previously joined the team’s brass an a minority investor with former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry.



“I am so happy to be starting this season as head coach and I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position,” Fabregas <a href="https://comofootball.com/en/cesc-fabregas-to-officially-become-head-coach-of-como-1907s-men-team/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> after making the news official. 



“I share the ambitions of the group and believe this is just the start of where this club can go. It’s going to be a tough and important season but myself and the rest of the coaching staff are ready and we all believe.”

Although he regularly appeared alongside popular figures such as Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, the new Como coach more than held his own. <h2>Coach is bringing star power to new Serie A team</h2>



The Spaniard’s impact at Como has been on full display this summer. While the club was previously founded in 1907, they have never won a major Italian trophy in their history. Despite this, the team has attracted a series of notable players during the current transfer window.



Former Spain internationals Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno have joined Como in recent weeks as free agents. The duo both played with the national team while Fabregas was starring for La Roja. They also recently departed <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/la-liga-tv-schedule/">LaLiga</a> side <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/villarreal-tv-schedule/">Villarreal</a> as well.



Along with the defensive duo, striker Andrea Belotti has also recently signed with Como as well. Belotti sputtered while with the Italian giants, but he did previously score over 100 Italian top flight goals for Torino.

In a story that captures the essence of resilience and strategic foresight, Como clinched a dramatic promotion to Serie A. This marked their return to Italy’s top flight for the first time in two decades.



This milestone comes after a tumultuous two decades that saw the club go bankrupt twice and plunge to the depths of Italy’s soccer pyramid. 



However, Como’s recent achievements symbolize a remarkable turnaround; largely attributed to the collective efforts of the Djarum Group and a cadre of strategic appointments. 



This includes minor shareholders <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/wales-targets-thierry-henry-as-their-next-manager/">Thierry Henry</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/cesc-fabregas-explains-why-statistics-in-soccer-are-misleading/">Cesc Fabregas</a> as well.



The Azzurri’s descent began in 2003 when they were relegated from <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a>. The situation worsened with another relegation and subsequent bankruptcy, pushing them into Serie D, Italy’s fourth tier. 



The years that followed were arduous. 



Although the club managed to climb back to Serie B by 2015, they endured a dismal 2015-16 season, finishing rock bottom and returning to Serie C. Another bankruptcy in 2017-18 saw Como back in Serie D, yet it was here that their fortunes began to change.



The turning point came in April 2019 with the takeover by the Djarum Group. Just over a month later, they secured a return to Serie C. This followed after a dominant campaign where they won 28 of their 34 matches, losing only once. 



This upward trajectory continued as they won the title in 2020-21, clinching their second promotion in three seasons and setting their sights on Serie A.



<h2>Already agreed first star signing</h2>



With promotion to Serie A now secured, Como’s focus has shifted to building a squad capable of competing at the highest level. The club’s ambition is evident in their recent moves in the transfer market. As a result, Raphael Varane, the former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> defender and World Cup winner, is set to join them. 



<a href="https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1812208908238258376" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fabrizio Romano</a> reported Varane has agreed to the move, with the player’s representatives currently reviewing the terms before a formal deal is signed. Fabregas played a pivotal role in convincing the Frenchman to make the switch, showcasing the club’s pulling power.



The 31-year-old free agent after his contract with United expired, had a challenging season plagued by injuries. Nevertheless, his experience and quality make him a valuable addition to Como’s defensive line. Alongside <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/ronaldo-reunion-varane-offered-substantial-salary-by-saudi-side-20240207-WST-488204.html">Varane</a>, the Lariani have also reached agreements with veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina and defender Alberto Moreno. Nonetheless, the player remains unconvinced about the move as of now.
