
<p>Chile’s World Cup Qualifying match against Uruguay did not include Inter forward Alexis Sanchez.</p>



<p>The veteran striker has spent the first few months of the season getting back into game shape. The Chilean’s return to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-milan-tv-schedule/">Inter</a> in Italy was not necessarily marked by a revival of his physical form.</p>



<p>This was because, since leaving Marseille, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/five-facts-on-alexis-sanchez-20180122-CMS-231507.html">Sanchez</a> had not been able to participate in regular team training. Throughout the summer, he had trained on his own to maintain his physical level.</p>



<p>The 34-year-old certainly wasn’t going to be game-ready straight away without a complete preseason with a squad. As a result, Sanchez has not been included on any active rosters for any games.</p>

<h2>Sanchez possibly suffering from anemia</h2>



<p>The experienced player, formerly of Arsenal and Barcelona, did not play for Chile in their <a href="https://www.worldsoccertalk.com/world-cup-qualifiers-tv-schedule/">World Cup qualifying match</a> against Uruguay on Friday.</p>



<p>With a final score of 3-1, Uruguay defeated <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/chile-national-team-tv-schedule">Chile</a> in the first match. Nicolas de la Cruz (two) and Fede Valverde netted the goals for the home side, while Arturo Vidal cushioned the blow for La Roja.</p>



<p>Now it has been reported that while on international duty, the new Inter signing is coping with a medical mystery; specifically, he could be suffering from a sort of anemia.</p>



<p>Test results have apparently been less than encouraging, with <a href="https://www.pazzidifanta.com/news-fantacalcio/sanchez-inter-cile-settembre-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sky Italia</a> reporting that his red blood cell level is far lower than predicted. As such, the medical staff is investigating the possible presence of anemia.</p>



<h2>Chile manager claimed Alexis Sanchez had a medical issue</h2>



<p>However, Sanchez’s national team coach claims that the 34-year-old will return to action in no time.</p>



<p>“Another match awaits us on Tuesday, and Alexis will be ready for it. After the medical tests that he underwent in Italy, he needed a period of rest as a precaution. But once that time passes, he’ll be an option on Tuesday.”</p>



<p>“We had to be cautious with him. Sanchez’s absence [against Uruguay] was not a technical decision. It was just for clinical reasons”, Chile coach Eduardo Berizzo said, via <a href="https://colombia.as.com/futbol/alexis-sanchez-disponible-en-chile-para-enfrentar-a-colombia-n/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AS Colombia</a>.</p>

<p>One hundred years after hosting the inaugural World Cup final, Uruguay provided a glimpse of what its national stadium, the Estadio Centenario, could look like if the country hosts the 2030 World Cup. Uruguay won the first World Cup, which is the only time the South American nation hosted the tournament. </p>



<p>The Estadio Centenario hosted 10 of the 18 games at that first World Cup in 1930. That included each of Uruguay’s four games. However, a stadium that old is not in prime condition. It is the primary home of the Uruguay national team, but no club plays in it each matchday. Then, with a capacity of just over 60,000, it is considerably smaller than other venues to host the World Cup Final. Stadiums for the World Cup final regularly hold more than 80,000 in capacity.</p>



<p>The Uruguayan government released new renderings of what the stadium could look like in 2030. Should Uruguay win the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/south-america-submits-joint-bid-for-2030-world-cup-20230208-WST-419024.html">2030 World Cup bid alongside Argentina, Chile and Paraguay</a>, the Estadio Centenario would be a major candidate to host the final.</p>

<p>The key part of the renderings is the <a href="https://twitter.com/espnuruguay/status/1692195216139182477?s=46&amp;t=7BjfcNwqyYe-A4pF0YoTdA" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">inclusion of a roof</a>. During July in Uruguay, temperatures do get quite cool. Highs are around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. However, shade is always welcome, and it is a common trend among new stadium designs. For example, Barcelona and Real Madrid added roofs to their stadiums as part of recent renovations.</p>



<h2>Updated stadium could boost 2030 World Cup bid for Uruguay</h2>



<p>The combined bid between Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay is one of two <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/saudi-arabia-pulls-out-of-2030-world-cup-race-20230623-WST-439187.html">active</a> and confirmed bids. The other is also between four countries. Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Ukraine are battling the South American countries to host the 2030 World Cup. </p>



<p>The South American countries proposed 18 stadiums across 13 cities. The Estadio Centenario is one of three to have hosted a World Cup final. The Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile hosted the 1962 World Cup Final. In the 1978 World Cup, the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires hosted the final. However, Uruguay’s Estadio Centenario is one of the leading venues for the bid. It is likely that Uruguay’s national stadium will host the final if the South American bid wins.</p>

<h3>Chile History</h3>



<p>The Federación de Fútbol de Chile was founded in 1895. The first match of the national team took place in 1910, and the nation was one of the four founding members of CONMEBOL, alongside Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. These four contested the first South American Championship – today known as Copa América, in 1916. </p>



<p>Chile also participated in the first ever World Cup in 1930, held in neighboring Uruguay. The nation also holds two dubious World Cup firsts: the first ever missed penalty kick in a World Cup (1930), and the first red card in a World Cup (1974).</p>



<p>An incident during a 1990 World Cup qualifying game led to Chile being banned from the qualifiers for 1994. Keeper Roberto Rojas faked an injury from a thrown firework, and the team left the pitch in protest. It turned out the player was never hit, Chile was given a forfeit in the game, and Rojas banned for life (the ban was later lifted).</p>



<p>In more positive happenings, Chile hosted the 1962 World Cup, and placed third. This was their best finish ever in the tournament. In their most recent of nine World  Cup appearances – 1998, 2010, and 2014 – Chile made the round of 16.</p>



<p>Chile won back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016. 2015 was as hosts of the traditional tournament, and 2016 was the special expanded “Centenario” edition held in the United States.</p>



<p>The aging, but active, players Gary Medel, Alexis Sánchez, Claudio Bravo and Arturo Vidal top the all-time caps list for Chile. The aforementioned Sánchez is the all-time goals leader for <em>La Roja</em>.</p>

<p>Focused on the 100-year anniversary of the inaugural World Cup, four nations in South America officially submitted a bid to host the 2030 World Cup.</p>



<p>Those countries are Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. The first three from that list have all hosted at least one World Cup in the past. Uruguay’s inclusion in the list is of particular note, as it was the host for that first World Cup in 1930. It also <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/05/10/how-many-countries-have-won-a-world-cup-on-home-turf/">won the World Cup on home soil</a>. </p>



<p>A joint bid between the four nations has long been in the works. However, this official bid wants the tournament to “return where football was born.”</p>



<p>“The 2030 World Cup is not just another World Cup, it deserves a celebration with recognition for 100 years,” said Alejandro Dominguez, the president of South American confederation CONMEBOL. Dominguez spoke with representatives of each of the four nations during a ceremony in Argentina. He, along with the rest of South America is excited at the potential to host the 2030 World Cup.</p>

<p>“We are convinced that FIFA has an obligation to honour the memory of those who came before us and believed in greatness and made the first World Cup,” Dominguez said.</p>



<h2>South America not alone in bid to host 2030 World Cup</h2>



<p>The CONMEBOL bid is the second official bid for the 2030 World Cup. The other comes out of UEFA, which submitted a joint hosting from Spain, Portugal and Ukraine. Ukraine only joined the proposal in October of 2022.</p>



<p>However, there are other locations yet to submit <em>official </em>bids that are all but assured to do so.</p>



<p>The biggest competitor is likely Saudi Arabia. Not only has Saudi Arabia aligned itself with FIFA’s advertisements at other World Cups, but it expressed interest in a <a href="https://time.com/6237519/saudi-arabia-world-cup-2030-bid/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">joint bid with Egypt and Greece</a>. While it would be a fairly spread out World Cup, it would encapsulate three continents. Of course, Saudi Arabia has a comparable human rights record to Qatar, which controversially hosted the 2022 World Cup. </p>



<p>A final potential host is Morocco, which has been in the mix for hosting the World Cup on a number of occasions. It narrowly missed out on hosting the 2026 World Cup, won by the United States, Mexico and Canada. If Morocco does submit a bid to host, it will be the country’s sixth bid to host the World Cup.</p>

<p>Earlier in 2022, Chile submitted a claim that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/05/20/ecuador-world-cup-spot-at-risk-after-potential-ineligible-player/">Ecuador clinched a World Cup</a> spot using an ineligible player.</p>
<p>Chile claimed that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/ecuador-national-team-tv-schedule/">Ecuador</a> picked up a total of six points against Chile in games where the player, Byron Castillo, appeared. However, over the summer, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/06/10/ecuador-still-in-world-cup-as-fifa-rejects-chile-complaint/">FIFA rejected Chile’s claims</a>. Consequently, Ecuador retained its World Cup spot, while Chile appealed the decision ahead of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/">Qatar 2022</a>.</p>
<p>Ahead of Thursday’s <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/fifa-set-date-chile-appeal-over-ecuador-world-cup-player-2022-09-01/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">appeal meeting</a> hearing held by FIFA, British newspaper <em>The Daily Mail</em> has published <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-11203773/Ecuador-face-kicked-World-Cup-new-evidence-Byron-Castillo-Colombian.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new evidence</a>. Remarkably, this information comes out just days before the official ruling on the case of Byron Castillo. It appears likely that the new revelations disclosed by the newspaper will be a part of the deliberations.</p>
<p>Most of the issues boil down into documentation, an issue first brought up as Castillo tried to transfer between two Ecuadorian clubs. The transfer collapsed due to ‘irregularities’ in documentation. In fact, one of the clubs involved in the transfer got suspended due to benefitting from players’ falsified documents.</p>
<p>Those issues could be haunting Castillo, and Ecuador, again.</p>
<h3>Ecuador’s World Cup dreams up in the air</h3>
<p>The biggest piece of evidence coming out in recent days is an interview Castillo had four years ago. In the interview, the player effectively gives a confession about his falsified documents. While Ecuador claim he is an Ecuadorian citizen, his documents and confession state that he was born in Tumaco, Colombia. Plus, while previous documents laid out that he was born in 1998, this new confession has Castillo saying he was born in 1995.</p>

<p>Chile managed to find both a Baptism registration with Castillo’s name. Moreover, it verified Castillo’s birth certificate with the Colombian registry. Castillo’s potential falsified birth certificate for Ecuador was not recognized by the country’s civil register.</p>
<p>Also, keep in mind that Ecuador claims it conducted an investigation and found nothing wrong. FIFA’s findings would call the entire <a href="https://www.fef.ec/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Ecuadorian Football Association</a> into question. The recording of Castillo’s interview plus the findings regarding documents could do considerable damage.</p>
<h5>Chile to the World Cup?</h5>
<p>The reason Chile is the one spearheading this investigation is because Chile would receive a pair of 3-0 forfeit wins if FIFA sees that as the verdict. The ensuing points and goal differential would see Chile go from seventh in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying up to fourth. That is good enough for a guaranteed spot in the group stages of the Qatar World Cup.</p>
<p>Adding to the drama is the fact that Ecuador is set to play in the World Cup opener. Ecuador would face the hosts, Qatar, on <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/world-cup-tv-schedule/">Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. ET on FOX</a>. However, if this does not hold up, FIFA must decide if Chile simply takes that spot, or if another team fills the void.</p>
