History of the Liverpool vs NUFC rivalry

As frequent competitors in England’s first division, Liverpool vs Newcastle is a historically common fixture. However, neither side considers the other amongst their main rivals.

Liverpool has a fierce rivalry with Manchester United, as well as nearby Liverpool neighbors Everton. Conversely, Newcastle’s main rivals are traditionally Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

However with the recent Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle, and their ensuing rise to the EPL’s elite, games between the two clubs will surely take on more importance in the coming years.

Liverpool defeated Newcastle in the 1974 FA Cup final, the only time the two have met in the final of the competition.

One memorable league match between the two was in 1996. Near the end of the season, both clubs were fighting for the title. Liverpool won 4-3 in a stoppage time thriller, buoying their title hopes (though Manchester United would end up winning).
