Mesut Özil’s Arsenal career has been a success

Photo credit: Fars News Agency Reports and rumors have surfaced that Mesut Özil could be on his way out of Arsenal as soon as January. While this isn’t necessarily breaking news, as the playmaker has made just two appearances on the season, it is a disappointing development in his illustrious career. The former German international has collected trophies in all three countries that he has been involved in, as well as playing a significant role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph. Nearly 31 now, Özil is heading towards the autumn of his career. This should be an exciting time for ... Read more

Matteo Guendouzi’s stock is soaring

When Arsenal were originally linked with Matteo Guendouzi in the summer of 2018, many Gooners around the globe had the same reaction: “who?” After all, the then teenager was a relative unknown player outside of France. Plying his trade for Ligue 2 side Lorient, there was little information on the shaggy-haired midfielder. Nevertheless, Arsenal’s brass saw something special in the youngster and signed him in a long-term deal worth around £7 million. Although many fans and pundits assumed Guendouzi would slowly integrate into the senior squad, head coach Unai Emery showed faith in the teen immediately. Guendouzi started the first ... Read more

Arsenal walking tightrope into top 4

Arsenal endured a grueling game on Sunday to move clear of their rivals in the table. After going a goal and a man down, the Gunners fired back to get the victory against Aston Villa. This was only the ninth occurrence of a team winning a match after having a player sent off while losing in the Premier League era. The comeback win under difficult circumstances certainly showed plenty of character and fight in the team; however, the north London club have to start stringing together good performances to remain in a top four position. Picking up three points is ... Read more

Individual errors are Arsenal’s ‘Achilles heel’

Arsenal once again shot themselves in the foot to drop points. After going up 2-0 away to Watford at the weekend, the Gunners endured a horrendous second half to only salvage a draw. While the draw means that they are still level with their main rivals for a top four place, these self-inflicted wounds are becoming a habit for the north London club. The two goals allowed on Sunday were both easily avoidable. Firstly, defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos quite literally passed the ball directly to an opposing player inside his own penalty area. On the mistake, the veteran center back took ... Read more

4 Arsenal players that need fresh contracts

Now that the summer transfer window has firmly closed, teams can now focus on players that they already currently have on their rosters. While head coaches/managers are surely fully focused on the season at hand, there could be work done behind the scenes. This is now a great time to hand out contract extensions to deserving players. In Arsenal’s case, they certainly don’t want repeats of past contract situations with players such as Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez. Luckily for the Gunners, they currently only have one senior player set to end his contract in the summer of 2020: ... Read more

Arsenal’s summer clear-out makes a top 4 finish very likely

Most of the talk surrounding Arsenal’s summer transfers was about their purchases, and rightly so. The Gunners stunned the soccer world by securing Nicolas Pepe in a club-record £72 million deal. One of the most sought after players in all of Europe, Pepe gives Arsenal some much needed creativity, pace, and width on the pitch. They also intelligently added quality players in the correct positions. Kieran Tierney, David Luiz, and William Saliba were all brought in to help stabilize a leaky defense (although they will have to wait a year on the Frenchman). The loan deal for Dani Ceballos also ... Read more

Why Nacho Monreal’s Arsenal departure is understandable

Photo credit: Chensiyuan Real Sociedad are reportedly closing in on Arsenal left back Nacho Monreal. The 33-year-old defender is currently in his final year of his current contract with the Gunners. Despite playing every minute of the north London club’s first three Premier League games, it would appear that Monreal would fall down the depth chart once Kieran Tierney recovers from injury. Along with Monreal and Tierney, Arsenal also have Sead Kolasinac in the position. Although the Bosnian is certainly better suited to be deployed as a wing back, he can fill in at left back as well. Head coach ... Read more
