Serbia-Albania Game Abandoned After Drone Incident

The Euro 2016 qualifying match between Serbia and Albania was abandoned by the referee on Tuesday after a drone carrying an Albanian flag interrupted the game, which later led to a mass brawl on the pitch and Albanian players being hit by projectiles from the crowd.

The insane scenes happened after the drone hovered over the stadium, carrying an Albanian flag. Eventually the flag was pulled down to the ground by Serbia’s Stefan Mitrović, which initiated a brawl between players. That then led to Albanian players being hit by projectiles from the Serbian crowd, as well as one Albanian footballer being hit by a chair (see above).

Not surprisingly, English referee Martin Atkinson decided to abandon the game after the 41st minute.

The rivalry between Serbia and Albania is an intense political affair that is fueled by ethnic tensions. For this match, Albanian fans were banned from attending, but that didn’t stop the banned fans from using a drone to fly their flag over the stadium. To make matters worse, the flag also showed Kosovo, which is a topic of much dispute because there are communities of ethnic Serbs and ethnic Albanians who live in the country, and there’s a large amount of tension between both groups. To add more confusion, not every country considers Kosovo an independent state.

So when Mitrović pulled the flag down from the drone, you can imagine the anger that created among the Albanian footballers.

The photo below is reportedly the flag that was flown by the drone over the field:

In further developments, Serbian media are reporting that the brother of Albania’s prime minister was arrested on suspicion of planning the drone maneuver.

According to Blic,

“Orfi Rama, brother of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, was arrested this evening in the VIP lounge of the Partizan stadium under reasonable suspicion that he organized and managed the incident with the flag of a Greater Albania which was abandoned after a football match teams of Serbia and Albania.”

Lastly, here’s the reaction from the Serbian fans when the Albanian national anthem was played before the match kicked off:

you say that UEFA most likely will penalize both sides. based on what you saw what will UEFA penalize the guest team for? for complying with all requests to play in a hostile environment? not be allowed to wear their jerseys cos the hosts are very sensitive to the red color with a black eagle in it? or because the only Flag( i am calling it a flag cos no one new what it was till after the game) or for refusing to play after being roughed up by the police and security forces? just which part of their behavior constitutes for a punishment by UEFA, or is it customary for the guest team to bent over?

I watched the game from beginning to end. You could not hear a word or the music of the albanian national anthem. They were chanting kill kill the albanians to non existance. I was watching the game with a few people that are serbian and translated. The only albanian flag in the stadium was thrown over the wall. Glass bottles and plastic objects were thrown at the albanian soccer players. Throught out the game i kept hearing very loud “boom” sounds. Than u would see the flares missled onto the pitch aimed for the albanian players. One player was almost hit by two flares for a corner kick. The flares and objects being thrown got so bad that the ref stopped the game. This all happened before the drone came into the stadium. There were atleast 1000 police inside the stadium all with masks and shields. What kind of security do they have to let these objects in the stadium. Those flares were obviously missled in by something how do u let that inside? Glass bottles how do u let that inside? Yes the drone came in yes of course the serbs were mad as hell, but a flag shouldnt provoke anyone. Everyone brings flags to games. The referee should have removed the flag no one else. When the serb removed the flag he was very agressive when removing i and i understand why. I also understand why the slbanian player didnt want him to touch the flag. But he didnt hit anyone, he just wanted the flag out of serbian hands. There was some pushing and holding the albanians back from trying to get the flag. But the physical fighting started when a fan got onto the pitch and hit an albanian player with a stool. Than the slbanian players grabbed the hooligan and hit him. They were protecting and defending their teammate as anyone would do. Also, security was hitting the albanian players,SECURITY, thats totally uncalled for. The serbian pkayers were the only ones trying to protect the albanian pkayers. But it has been reported that a couple of serbian playets did hit the albanian players. But the majority did try to help them. I believe the players both just wanted to play, but the fans were seriously out of control. After being hit physically there was no way the albanian were physicslly or metally ok to continue to play. I blame the govt for not being able to handle their fans. The serbian extremist fans have a history of violence at soccer games and even basketball games. Not all serbs are horrible people, but the govt knows who these hooligans are and they should not let them in the stadium. It is the host teams responsibility for the saftey of the players. And i also noticed that the slbanian team was wearing white, normally the home team wears white. I asked my serbian friends why is serbia in red. They laughed and said serbias jerseys are blue and never wear red, and yes they should be wearing white, but they concluded that serbia didnt want the albanians to wear their red jerseys….lol…we all joked about that part. Uefa is most likely gonna penalize both sides, but i believe the serbian side should be penalized heavier. What i saw happen in that stadium, i have never seen before. But i googled serbia football violence and than i saw that that type of behavior is normal for them and i am suprised they have not been dealt with before buy the soccer associations. This game should have been played on neutral territory in a closed stadium. Let both fans watch it on tv.

Its not about a game any more, serbian people are showing clearly their hate and sadism just why a flag showed up in a soccer game.Shame on them.
They can shout “kill albanians” and think that only serbians can get offended, only they can get mad, they are gods who can kill anybody, insult anybody, beat up anybody and they just get away with this.Ignorance is the most dangerous desease in the world and hateness feed it.
You keep doing your thing,no one stops you,at least world knows,God knows,if you have a percentage of trust,u should know.
I am an Albanian and i am proud of it,Stop racism and sadism,if that makes.u happy,i feel sorry for you.

October 12th, 2010, Marassi Luigi Ferraris Stadium, Genova, Italy: Serbian hooligans of far right groups cause the game to be abandonned after violence in the stands.
October 16th, @012, Mladost Stadium, Krusevac, Serbia: game ended in a big brawl after Serbian fans and players racially and physicially abused the English U21 team.
October 14th, 2014, Partizan Stadium, Beograd, Serbia: Game abandonned after the pitch was invaded and Albanian players were beaten by far right groups of fans
    Anybody see a pattern here?

In this case Albania should be banned. Its all their fault, football players should not react like that when Serbian player took down that stupid flag anyway. Unless they put it up or helped them out.

Did everyone commenting here see the actual, full video? Here’s what I saw:
1-Serb fans jeered the Albanian anthem = not cool
2-Albanian flew drone with politically provocative flag over the playing field = XXX not cool
3- Serb player pulls the flag down = reasonable act
4-Albanian players charge at Serbian player to take the flag by force = WTF? = first act of violence
5-All hell breaks loose on the field

That`s what I saw. You can play the blame game either way …

You do not have to be a historian to conclude that flying a drone with a politically charged flag over the field — low enough to be grabbed by a player and stop the game –is inexcusably disruptive!! Whoever is responsible deserves very serious disciplinary action. End of story. I’d like to see what happens…..

The first written traces of serbs people on Balcan penincula appear around 6th century. Before that the area was held by Rome, with attacs and influence of varous tribes, serbes inclused. Even in Wikipedia you can find out the names of serbian kings since 8th sentury. This is for history.
Anyway it is not acceptable to to promote any political idea and goal during the sport event. This is a provocation of your hoast and not civilased behaviour.

    • Albert

      October 15, 2014 at 11:36 am

Ana, again, seing the right to invade the pitch and beat players because you were “provoked” is a silly argument and will not help your cause. There were hundreds of nationalist and racist banners and chants in the stadium last night from the Serbian fans. That is O until you invade the pitch and beat 11 players who are there to play soccer for a living.

        October 15, 2014 at 2:19 pm

Do your research and read various media sources. First of all, check the Albanian players’ interviews before the game. Why did they went to attack Stefan Mitrovic. Did they want Serbs to keep it in the air forever?! Would you say it is ok if let’s say Afghan or Isis or Iraque flag would fly over your stadium? I guess you’re American or British therefore I chose those examples. Stop preachinh to Ana and put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. Again I’m against what happened later on but could you control the reaction of your ppl aaftet such a provocation. I guess not…If you could please let us all know how.

        • Albert

          October 15, 2014 at 4:23 pm

Hey, I was in the stadium yesterday and I saw everything so I dont need any sources. Yes, you could control yourself and you should! Any civilized nation would have given its response in the field, and there is nothing to say when the ultranationalist and neonazi groups including Ivan Bogdanov invade the field. Do you understand you do not have anything to say? They caused a similar disaster in Genova and the one who suffered was the Serbian national team. They lost 3 points and did not qualify. Will you people ever understand that these behaviours only harm Serbia, nobody else? Italy got three points and that’s it. Albania will probably get 3 points as well. And Serbia will play the next few games with closed doors or in some other country. Plus the bad reputation that will stick for years. I keep repeating it, certain complexes need to stop, right now. Serbian people are talented, hard working, well mannered and with great hospitality. You should not allow Ivan Bogdanov and the other ultranationalist morons to represent you.

          • Stefan

            October 15, 2014 at 11:10 pm

What about albanian players and how did they react??? If they didn’t attack Markovic who took down that ugly flag, nothing would happened?! Now its time for Serbia to get 3 points! Because Albanians didn’t came out to play when they could. And if you wore on stadium you could c that! And they can freely closed out doors for Serbia for this EURO Q anyway we will win all games. But I am expecting 3 points for Serbia closed doors for 3 home games. Albania closed doors for 3 games and losing 3-0 this game. This is scenario that they wanted… And that’s why they didn’t came come out and continue to play…

What are you a spy? Read the interviews, get a bigger picture. Don’t insist just on one side. As you always do, since your people has that tendency to see just one side the one that is favourable for you and in your interest. We know your heart is with Albanians. You showed that in 1999.

No, I am a journalist. I was hoping you would understand this is just a game of soccer, where 22 players play and spectators watch for fun. This is not the Kosovo war and flying a banner over the stadium, chanting filthy things, invading the field and beating players, throwing things in the field will not make you feel any better. Genova 2010, Krusevac 2012 (against England U21) and now Beograd 2014. It is time that somebody steps up and says “Enough!” And it has to come from within the Serbian public opinion, from the intelligence of the country. That is all what I have to say.

I hope that UEFAallows the returning game to be palyed in albania with fans of both teams attending( despite the fearUEFA got from this game) and hope you will attend that game. i am convinced that will be someone who will try to offend the guests but i am also convinced that teh entire arena in Elbasan will be silent when the Serbian anthem will play and that the palyers and fans will be escorted from the stadium to the cafe down the street and given a beer no matter what the result is. i say that because i have seen many heated games in Tirana and even when Greeks came a few years back it was heated debate but as soon as teh game started it was decided in teh field not by the fans throuing things and chanting kill this or thatnation.

First of all sports, music or ART in general is suppose to bring Peace but Serbs showed their ‘culture’ from the beginning, when Albanians were singing the hymn, Serbs were shouting like hooligans. Albanian players were calm and playing their game on the field when Serbs were throwing fireworks and bottles and the game didn’t stop and they made a big deal out of a flying Non dangerous flag?!
Every country should be free to represent its flag freely, plus Serbs were way a LOT more than Albanians and once again Albanians showed their courage and fearlessness!!!

first they were fighting Croatians in every soccer event
    Now Albania
I wonder what they will do when Kosovo start their UEFA tour
I would indefinitely disqualify serbia till they learn the lesson as they are losers anyway as always

Serbian have always been Nationalists and they are still remain Nationalists
They want integration in European union to destroy European Union
No one wants Union with the worst Nation in Europe not even Montenegrins wanted to share life with Serbs

Yeah, right you’re the authority to say who can live with who. It is so ridiculous…let’s talk some empathy…try to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. A flag was provocation, a Serbian player catches it. If you look at the next moment he is folding it in a peaceful manner. Two Albanian players go after him attack him…it was obvious that the player wanted to resolve situation in a a normal way so that football could be played. But no the two Albanians want to fend a flag of non-existing imaginary dream state which ofends several people of the much about poor poor Albanians who started it and planned it. I’m against violence and disapprove of what happened later but if they let Stefan Mitrovic take it out of the pitch probably that would be it. Albanians’ celebration today explains the situation and also the interviws their players gave prior to the game speak volumes about inborn hate towards Serbians. Think about it.Check their media today-nation is celebrating. I wonder what?! Decide for yourselves is this wrong.

The Serbians and Albanians can’t stand each other and you are probably right that the game shouldn’t have been drawn but both teams may be short on those they can be drawn against. The Albanian issues were outlined above. The Serbians don’t like Croatia because they were the junior partner in Yugoslavia. Montenegro, Bosnia and Slovenia don’t want to play Serbia because the serbs to varying degrees tried to kill them all. On top of that none of these six cares for the Greeks all that much and god forbid you draw the Serbians against Israel because they can’t handle a game against an English team that doesn’t have a single Jewish player. The Albanians need to grow up because their country is never going to look like that fever dream of a flag. The Serbians need to learn to play nice with others or they should not be allowed to play in these competitions at club or national level.

While you can write a book on the current relations of the former Yugoslav republics (and they have been written) the truth is that Serbia and Croatia, for example, have already played each other in qualifying (WC 2014) without major incidents. Currently, all 6 former Yugoslav republics have representatives in the ABA Basketball League and have for years now without incident. The current relationship between Albania and Serbia is different and UEFA should have foreseen this. And let me just add, all of the countries east of Slovenia all the way to Bulgaria (call it the Balkans) are dealing with high unemployment and a generation that sees a bleak future. Their politicians have sold off the old public sector to a handful of their friends and the rest are left to starve. Whole countries built upon a foundation of corruption. They would even forget the 600-year feud if they could see a brighter tomorrow. THAT is what manifests itself in the stands. Not sure UEFA or anybody else could help.

When Serbia recognizes Kosovo as Independent then these match-up can happen with no incident.
Serbians dont stand Albanians no matter they r from Albania,Kosovo,Macedonia,Montenegro or Serbia
Serbia has 120000 Albanians but they have registered only 5000 with no human rights abandoned and discriminated by Serbian government

The flag showed something called Greater Albania. Greater Albania[1] is an irredentist concept of lands that are considered to form the national homeland by many Albanians,[2] based on claims on the present-day or historical presence of Albanian populations in those areas. In addition to the existing Republic of Albania, the term incorporates claims to regions in the neighbouring states, the areas include Kosovo, territories in southern Montenegro, northwestern Greece so it’s a provocation to all thos nations, and people not just Serbia.

Once again is shown primitive side of Serbians who cannot get civilized even for a game!!!!! It was a football match, not war! At least (having into consideration that Albanians were not allowed to be present) they could have been civilized during the national hymn of Albania who were guests in this match! But no….neanderthals couldn’t “pretend” being civilized even for one minute. Shame!!! Indeed Shame!!!!

I’ll just leave you with this information. The man who controled the drone is brother of Albanian prime minister. When serbian footballer took down the flag, 2 Albanian footballers started fighting with them. Serbians were extremely provoked. You said it yourself, albanian fans were forbiden from coming, but they still came only to cause chaos. All over Albania there are parties, fireworks, just because the game was canceled. Who is the hooligan here?

the hooligan here is the one with the chair… Caos … but there were no albanian fans in the stadium , and my dear could you bring in some facts ( photos videos and ect ) before you accuse someone done something like The albanian players didnt fight theywent to take the flag and so they did ( I so the video ) …

the game started with provocations from servian side – whistling when the Albanian hymn, then shouting “slaughter Albanians” (this shows a lot that you are and will be savages) then throwing things at the stadium, in fact the game stopped before the flag was on the stadium. it stopped once a flare was thrown into the field. but you lie because your entire nation history is based on lies and being savages. as per flag – it could easily be servian doing, they needed something to happen so the game can stop (couldn’t bare the loss of servia) and those hooligans that where there and shouldn’t have been could attack the Albanian players. The whole world knows that you are killers and thieves, you killed a French football fan for nothing. savages – go back to mountains where you came from.

and if you are that easy to provoke, then my oh my you are sooooo naive and stupid asses

check the facts first and then judge

Ana, you got to be kidding!!!! There were weeks that Serbia has prepared the unhealthy situation,..was it panicked or has been done on purpose, we propably never will know. The fact, Serbia didn’t accept the albanian fans was part of the whole dark scenario. I don’t blame all serbian people, as I don’t please all the albanians. I do have serbian friends here in Toronto, which are ashamed for what that day produced. 20000 or more serbian fans, 4000 or more cops wanted to intimidate 100 ish albanians. Starting from the airoport, hotels, the killing mentality during the albanian anthem and after when they chanted transmitting the message of exterminating all albanians. Ana, another fact is that; so far the serbian authorities don’t have anybody in custody, so we cannot speculate. Nje poster with albanian national symbols (controlled by an unidentified person) flying and some albanian players trying to take it (probably it appeared overreaction, but a french, english, german, russian player would have done the same or worst) is equal with that racism massiv serb???!!! seriously!!! UEFA has the chance to comply with its policy

I think you and all serbian people need to be edučated how to leave in the new era. Albania and it`s people never cause any trouble in history, Serbia has caused trouble with many countries.

Yes, shame I agree. The shame is on all albanians since their politicians go abroad to provoke riots because they cannot beat other teams by simply playing soccer.

Their players are no better, because they attacked the person who clearly just wanted to carefully remove the ridiculous “flag” of albanian wildest nationalistic dreams which will unfortunately never come true.

        Yes, shame!

Listen, as an American who lives in the Balkans and as a soccer lover I must say this much. Flags, banners, slogans even when they consists of insults and slurrs are OK; not nice, but fine. Whistles, “Kill Albanian” slogans are also OK, ugly but OK. Soccer players entering a brawl or having a fight is also part of the game, punished by the ref, but if does not stop a game. On the other hand fans entering the field, beating up players with chairs and what-not, security guards kicking players at the entrance of the tunnel is a total separate issue and will require harsh punishments by UEFA. This is the second time after Genova and I believe Serbian people are better than this. Actually I assure you they are better than this.

100 albanians against 30 thousand serbians..??!!! Hard to beleive it. We have to wonder whether the serbian authority is powerless to maintain an event or it is able to control everything including the drone.

          October 20, 2014 at 6:38 pm

BTW are you serious. did you even watch the video? no one attacked the Serbian player who pulled down the flag. the Albanian players rushed in to take the flag and safeguard it, as is their right. not one Albanian player hit a single Serbian player. how many of the Serbian bench players came in and pushed Albanian players? how many fans and stewards rush at the Albanian players and attacked them? the Stewards and policemen attacked Albanian players. the people who were supposed to protect them attacked them. Now, for the most part, the starting Serbian players did try to shield the Albanian players from the fans and the stewards. They behaved like sportsmen should behave. unfortunately, the Serbian fans, police and politicians are behaving like hooligans, even a week later. of course, I understand the typical Serbian strategy in all cases is to play the victim. always has been your strategy. The Serbian government actually claimed to be the victims in the Croatian War, the Bosnian war, and during their ethnic cleansing in Kosova. Why look at that! What is the common factor in all of these cases? Serbian aggression. Go figure!

Come on BTW,the game was playing in Belgrade not in Tirana and the host country is responsible for the activity. I am very sorry because you so ignorant we played in Portugal with them an we won my friend 1-0, we played with Denmark in Tirana and the result was 1-1 an nothing happened and of course if the Serbian hooligans will allow us to play we could win that match. The flag that you describe show the place where the Albanians live and there was not any other written big Albania but just autochthonous.

Albanians are the Oldest nation in Balkan,
Greater albania is small in Compare how big was Illyria
Albanians territories had been always compromised by others mostly
Slavic people who came from Russia in 13 century
Check all countries around Albania including Greece they have a lot of Albanians and their territories in their hands
Not Only Albania there is also Hungary with a lot of Hungarians and their territories taken by Romania and TITO Yugoslavia,
Tito Yugoslavia took from Bulgaria 7 Cities, 4 in Serbia 3 in Macedonia belongs to Bulgaria
and everyone knows that but never given back to Bulgaria.
Tito only gave back TRIESTE to Italy
TITO took whole Kosovo, and Few cities from Albania
3 now in Montenegro,8 in Macedonia,3 in Serbia
I dont understand you comment, who is asking for big Albania they just want back their territories taken from them due to influence of Russia which apparently most of them they will never get back
Serbia always openly was fighting for big Serbia,by even Killing a lot of Bosnians,Croats and Albanians just to achieve big Serbia
They were always showing 3 fingers
Long time ago their king asked them to invade Greece to get access to sea in THESALONIKI,but that did not happen as they bcome friends when Greece saved Serbian ass when Austro-Hungary wanted to destroy them.
You can talk a lot about politics in Balkan and you can see that 90% problems are created by Serbians
Tell me if the world is civilized now and we should thing positively
then why Serbia is not recognizing Kosovo as Independent
They wanted to exterminate that population just to take over that territory and populate with serbs from Bosnia.
If you have Lived in EX-YU you might know something if not you will be wasting your time discussing as it is hard to comprehend

Please, read some history! Dont make a fool of yourself 🙂 13th century, Illiria= Albania, yeah, right! Why did you celebrate 100 years of existence of your nation if you are older than amoebas? 🙂 Unfortunately, we are all a like on the Balkans and we all claim that our nation is oldest. Meanwhile our politicians are stealing our money, our future. They wants us to fight over some stupid game, they wants us to fight each other so they can steal freely, think about it. Anyway, what ever makes you sleep well at night. Greetings from Kosovo and Metohija.

Aleks , I have no idea where you are from, and obviously you have problem identifying yourself.
Open some books or learn how to use GOOGLE and you’ll find out that Albanian language is older than the old greek language…not the new one.
Also we celebrated 100 years of independence , not existence.

Alex, we celebrated the 100 year anniversary of our independence from the ottoman empire, not our existence. Albania was a nation until the ottoman empire conquered the region. The rest of your post I agree with! The people need to top feeding into the politicians lies and vote them all out of office.

Seriously? This runt is so far out, I wonder if you’re high on drugs or just plain delusional. Your claims are outrageous and quite stupid. The political provocation with regards to propaganda wrt. called ‘greater albania’ taking significant parts of neighbouring countrys’ areas will get you nowhere. What you want is the same as fascist albanian state between 1941-45. So actually you will get a war with the rest of Balkans’ countries. Then it will be small albania, for real.

Slava, it is every occupied peoples ambition to unite their nation and their people. it is foolhardy on your part to assume that people of differing customs, beliefs, languages and so on, can agree to coexist by force. That scenario never turns out well for anyone. I still can’t understand why Greece and Montenegro and Serbia and Macedonia want to hold people hostage in the 21st century. All of those areas that are occupied by the indigenous Albanians, were negotiated over the span of three years during the Balkan wars. None of which involved Albania itself. Those areas of Albania were carved off like meat off the bone for the dogs of war, namely Greece, Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro, who had all gained their independence from Turkey years before. Having been the last nation in the Balkans to gain its freedom, it also meant that Albania was ill prepared to defend itself against the aggressions of all of these nations so it acquiesced to the decisions of the European powers. As I see it, France, Italy, and Great Britain owe it to the Albanian people to give back what they took away from them. Go learn your history Slava.
