Arsenal Announce Signing of Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Chilean attacking midfielder Alexis Sanchez.

The Barcelona and World Cup star has joined the Gunners on a long-term deal. The transfer wasn’t disclosed, but it’s believed to be approximately £30million.

Sanchez, 25, joins Arsenal from Barcelona where he made a total of 88 appearances, scoring 39 goals during his three seasons with the Catalan side.

With Barcelona, Sanchez won both La Liga (2012/13) and the Copa del Rey (2012), as well as the Spanish Super Cup on two occasions (2011, 2013), the UEFA Super Cup (2011) and the FIFA Club World Cup (2011).

Wenger said:

“As many people have seen during the World Cup this summer, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted that he is joining us at Arsenal Football Club.

“Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks. He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad. I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club.”

Sanchez said:

“I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy.”

Sanchez traveled to London Colney on Thursday to complete his medical and will join up with his new team-mates at the end of July, after spending some time on holiday following the World Cup.

It is expected that Sanchez will make his first Arsenal appearance at the Emirates Cup, which takes place at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3.

Exciting indeed. This is a fantastic signing and a much more attractive option that some of the other “flair” attackers named in the rumor mill… stability and constancy up front will be welcomed.

If Debuchy (sp?) plays out in the next day our two, we will only need a defensive midfielder to be a true force to be reckoned with.

Can’t wait for the start of the season!

Would’ve liked Sanchez to come to Anfield but I actually prefer Sterling to continue his progression on the wing with the first team. He had 9 goals in 30 games but the majority of those were scored after Christmas. With renewed confidence and finally earning a spot on the first team, barring injury, he may be good for 15+ goals and 10+ assists.

Sterling might improve but there’s no way he will be as good as Sanchez in the upcoming season. Not only did Liverpool miss out on Sanchez but that he went to a league rival is even more worrisome.

We’ll see. If there is any club that I prefer to win, if it cant be Liverpool, it would be Arsenal. Also why would Liverpool not ask for Pedro in the Suarez deal? He had 18 goals in all competitions last year and 15 in league.

Pedro’s tactical profile from Barca’s website:
“Although he usually plays the ball with his left foot, Pedro is actually right handed. This ambidextrous nature of his game means he can play on either side of the pitch, or even fit in as a target man. He is excellent at finding the right position and has a powerful shot, most notably from long range.”

Apparently Liverpool did try to include Pedro in the deal after Sanchez refused but Pedro was also not interested in leaving Barca for Liverpool.

Terrific signing for Arsenal. If, as rumored, they also sign Khedira then Arsenal will be a force to reckon with in the upcoming season. They still need to sort out the defense but from midfield to forwards Arsenal have a formidable squad.

The big loser here is Liverpool who were hoping Sanchez would replace Suarez. That Sanchez turned down playing for Liverpool is just another top player who doesn’t want to play for Liverpool.

Early days in the transfer season and I’m sure there’s more to come.

Dont worry. Wenger will still find a way to choke the league again.

Does this mean Walcott is strictly a backup now, or do one of these two play at striker?

I think it all depends on the rest of the summer signings. Some saying he will play as a #9, some say he will play on the left.

Walcott probably won’t be fully fit until October anyway, so squad depth is fully welcomed.

Sanchez is already the best player on this team other than possibly ozil. Why whould you play him out of position? Ive usually always seen him play as a right winger.

Lets see how Sanchez plays on a cold windy rainy night at stoke when he’s getting lumps kicked out of him.

He will do plenty of “Neymar-ing” you can count on that.

I know this has been in the works for a while, but I haven’t been paying attention to the transfer market due to the World Cup. Why on earth did Barca want to sell Sanchez? Especially with a transfer ban pending (if that happens)? 30 million isn’t much more than Barca paid for him. Don’t really understand.

I was hoping he would sign with City 3 years ago, but knew he’d choose Barca over City then. Arsenal have picked up a world class player in his prime.

They should have never signed Neymar. The Galacticos concept didnt work for Real why would it work with Barca. Not saying Neymar isnt a world class talent but he isnt needed when you already have a world class player.

        July 10, 2014 at 3:54 pm

What do you mean it didn’t work for Real? They won the champions league & continue to sign the best players from around the world every summer.

          July 10, 2014 at 6:32 pm

He meant the original Galacticos (Raul, Figo, Beckham, Zidane, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos)which were the marketing champs of the world but only won 2 league titles and 1 CL, I believe, from 2000-07 which ended the first Galacticos era

Neymar and Alexis flanking Suarez (when hes not on a suspension) with Messi behind would be one lethal front 4. Rakitic and Busquets in CM. Thats a CL-winning team.

Now you will see more sluggish tiki taka with Iniesta in the front 3 and Neymar drifting around as well as Messi. And Barcelona will win nothing unless Real Madrid (and the referees) choke the league again.
