<p>The United States men’s national team picked up another Nations League success under Gregg Berhalter. Berhalter has shown massive success in North America as the man in charge of a pair of Nations League crowns and the 2021 Gold Cup. Plus, he got the squad back to the World Cup after the disaster of 2018. Still, critics point to a lack of results against top teams from outside North America and the Caribbean. With a host of talented and powerful nations coming to the United States this summer in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">Copa America</a>, Berhalter will be under mounting pressure to pull out results. </p>



<p>If Copa America does not go well for the United States and Berhalter’s USMNT exit in the group stage or the round of 16, Jesse Marsch would be a natural replacement. Ironically, the two engaged in some petty back-and-forth throughout the Nations League. That stemmed from Marsch questioning Reyna’s inclusion in the squad on the CBS podcast Call it What <em>You Want</em> based on his availability and experience at Nottingham Forest. Berhalter hit back with a comment directed toward Marsch.</p>



<p>“I think I heard somewhere that someone asked, ‘Why did Gio get called into camp?’ did you guys hear that?” <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/tony-meola-jesse-marsch-react-to-gregg-berhalters-comments-on-usmnt-hero-gio-reyna-this-is-a-deflection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berhalter said</a>. “Anyone? I think he showed why tonight. It’s clear he deserves to play on this team.”</p>

<p>Certainly, Berhalter was right. Reyna picked up two assists in the Nations League semifinal against Jamaica before scoring the second goal in the win over Mexico in the Nations League Final. Yet, the comments directed at Marsch highlighted another issue for Berhalter. The past issues with Reyna are a microcosm of player selection issues. Haji Wright, for example, was not in the original squad, and the Coventry City striker only joined the side after an injury to Josh Sargent. He scored a brace in extra time to defeat Jamaica. </p>



<h2>Marsch critical of USA under Berhalter</h2>



<p>Player suggestion is one thing. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/mexico-is-the-last-test-for-berhalter-to-prove-he-fits-with-usmnt/">Berhalter has also been under fire</a> for his in-game tactics and managerial decisions. The USMNT relies on possession, which it often dominates in each game. However, it is not clinical or dangerous in the final third. For example, the United States had far more possession than Jamaica in the semifinal, but it required an own goal in second-half stoppage time to force extra time. </p>



<p>Then, in the Final, Marsch directly questioned first-half tactics against Mexico. </p>



<p>“I don’t understand why we make all these complicated rotations, and for me, we are putting players in positions that do not access their best qualities,” <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSportsGolazo/status/1772085575597601034" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marsch said</a> while working as an analyst for CBS during Nations League coverage.</p>



<p>In a way, Marsch is alluding to the fact that Berhalter has a talented squad of young USA players. Their ability could have played a bigger role in the side’s success on Sunday night than anything Berhalter did. The two goals did not come from brilliant build-up play nor did they capitalize on taking advantage of Mexico. The first goal was a stunner from 30 yards away from Tyler Adams. <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSportsGolazo/status/1772083751608111278" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marsch said</a> Adams had never struck a ball that well in his life. Then, Gio Reyna’s second-half goal was another brilliant volley from just inside the 18-yard box after a deflected cross.</p>



<p>At this point, the talent gap between the United States and Mexico is the difference between the two sides. Success in the Nations League is a combination of elite USMNT players and a poor Mexico side. From Marsch’s perspective, Berhalter has yet to prove that he can out-coach a top side from anywhere else in the world. </p>

<h2>Can Marsch make the USMNT better?</h2>



<p>The United States has had similar instances of coaches being critical of USMNT bosses. The <em>feud</em> between Marsch and Berhalter resembles that of 2010 when then-ESPN analyst Jurgen Klinsmann said Bob Bradley was not doing well with the United States. Klinsmann then became the head coach of the USA men’s national team, where he led the side to the World Cup round of 16 in 2014 and a Gold Cup title in 2013.</p>



<p>The U.S. Soccer Federation sacked Bradley after losing the 2011 Gold Cup to Mexico, and Klinsmann stepped in. In 2024, Berhalter’s status with the USMNT could be contingent on success in the Copa America. The talent showed what it can do against Mexico yet again. Now, Berhalter must work to get the best out of his squad. If he does not, Jesse Marsch could prove to be the second critic-turned-coach as a replacement for Berhalter in the USA men’s national team.</p>

<p>The recent 3-1 win over Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals may be the least ceremonious win in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/usmnt-tv-schedule/">USMNT</a> history. An uninspired squad trailed after one minute following a defensive lapse on a well-worked throw-in. Demanding an equalizer, the United States failed to generate a considerable number of chances that tested Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake. Only an <a href="https://twitter.com/worldsoccertalk/status/1770978306487152958" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">own goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time</a> saved the Americans. Haji Wright then scored twice in the added 30 minutes on two assists from Gio Reyna to send the Americans into the Nations League Final against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/how-to-watch-mexico-national-team/">Mexico</a>.</p>



<p>In several ways, the result against Jamaica jogged memories of everything that is frustrating about Gregg Berhalter. Supporters point to the dominating possession and general lack of chances from the Jamaicans. Much like Manchester City, for example, the opposition cannot score if they do not have the ball. The only issue is that Manchester City is dangerous with the ball. The United States did not show any sort of creativity in the final third. Not only did Jamaica have more expected-goals than the United States. Berhalter looked devoid of any tactical change to spark momentum.</p>



<p>In one of the more concerning moments of the second half, commentators on <a href="https://paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">Paramount+</a> noted Tyler Adams motioned to the bench, signaling confusion in the on-field tactics. With five minutes of stoppage time, the United States resorted to the long ball, as any team would. In the end, the talent of the United States surpassed that of Jamaica. A fortunate break with the last touch of the regular 90 let the United States back into the game. Haji Wright, who was not on Berhalter’s original 23-man squad for the Nations League, scored on either side of the two extra time intervals. </p>

<h2>Mexico is the ultimate test for USMNT and Berhalter</h2>



<p>With the Copa America just three games away now, the United States is rapidly losing time to figure out what is effective. Maybe step one is dealing with tactics, and that comes from the manager. Gregg Berhalter has not been one to show that his tactical work can put the United States in positions to win. At the World Cup, Louis van Gaal bested Berhalter, but that was always going to be a tough task for the Americans. The talent was an issue against the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.</p>



<p>The talent should not be an issue against Jamaica. Yet, struggling against lesser teams is a familiar spot for Berhalter in competitive games. A loss against Slovenia in a friendly came after a loss against Trinidad and Tobago in the Nations League quarterfinals. The United States would have struggled in the 2023 Nations League if it were a talent issue. Instead, BJ Callaghan led the team to a 3-0 win over Mexico and a 2-0 win over Canada while <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/berhalter-returns-as-usmnt-head-coach-through-2026-20230616-WST-438087.html">Berhalter was out of a job</a>. Each of those results was a comfortable triumph.</p>



<p>That must be the expectation for Berhalter on Sunday. A win over Mexico is more than just an expectation. Mexico is beginning to find its footing again after failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup. Mexico dumped an inferior Panama with a 3-0 scoreline. Despite the managerial turnover for El Tri, Mexico is a major threat.</p>



<p>Candidly, many people would have said Berhalter had no place with the USMNT after the exit from the World Cup. Berhalter has regularly struggled against top opposition, but it cannot be the case against weaker teams. Mexico has always been the test of success for the United States. That speaks now more than ever with Gregg Berhalter.</p>

Mexico is the last test for Berhalter to prove he fits with USMNT

Gregg Berhalter is under the microscope when the USMNT faces Mexico in the Nations League Final as fans continue to pile on pressure.

<p>As we near the end of the 2023-24 season, Premier League teams are already making arrangements for a US tour.</p>



<p>The likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal have all confirmed that the United States will play host to their preseason tours. There will be a string of matches in which they face off against one another.</p>



<p>This will be Liverpool and Manchester United’s first meeting in the US since 2018. It will take place on July 31 in Philadelphia. Their last game was in Ann Arbor’s Michigan Stadium six years ago when 101,000 spectators were present.</p>



<p>Chelsea and Manchester City have already confirmed their participation in the Soccer Champions Tour. This summer, it will take place in six US cities, including AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. In the first two games of the collection, Man City will take against AC Milan and Barcelona. Meanwhile, Real Madrid will be the last opponent for Chelsea.</p>



<p>Also, Aston Villa will play a friendly versus Columbus Crew, the defending MLS Cup winners, as part of their return to the US this summer. In the weeks and months ahead, further preseason games will be announced.</p>



<h2>More Premier League teams to tour the US?</h2>



<p>It has now been reported that a preseason event in the US has extended invitations to many other teams. Per <a href="https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-invited-play-united-28868572" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chronicle Live</a>, it would have West Ham, Everton, Wolves, and Newcastle competing against each other.</p>



<p>This news source first broke the news that a three-game series beginning on August 3 would take place in Tampa Bay, Connecticut, and Jacksonville (Florida). Nevertheless, rumor has it that the event has not been officially sanctioned as yet. In particular, since Wolves and West Ham are still in the hunt for a place in Europe’s qualifying round. On the other hand, Everton are battling relegation.</p>

Four more Premier League teams set for US preseason tour

As we near the end of the 2023-24 season, Premier League teams are already making arrangements for a US tour

<p>Ipswich Town has announced that a group of US investors take over a 40% stake in the club. In the deal, Bright Path Sports Partners will fund around $132 million to grab a minority stake in the team. Ipswich is currently third in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/championship-tv-schedule/">EFL Championship</a> table and looking to earn promotion to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a>. The Tractor Boys have not featured in the top flight since 2002.</p>



<p>Despite the deal, fellow United States group ORG will retain a 50% majority control of the club. The firm previously purchased its stake back in 2021. The remaining 10% is under the ownership of smaller investors. Current <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/ipswich-town-tv-schedule/">Ipswich</a> CEO Mark Ashton will also continue running the day-to-day operations inside the team as well.</p>



<p>ORG co-founder Ed Schwartz revealed on Friday that eventually selling a piece of the team was always his intention. “When we purchased Ipswich Town in 2021, we did so with the initial aim of restoring the club to the Championship and becoming competitive at this level, with the plan always including bringing a partner on board when the time was right,” <a href="https://www.itfc.co.uk/news/2024/march/22/press-release-bright-path-sports/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Schwartz.</p>



<p>“The club’s progress means we feel that time is now and we are excited to welcome Bright Path Sports. Alongside the continued day-to-day leadership of Mark Ashton, who we are delighted has further committed his future to the club, we look forward to Bright Path bringing significant value to Ipswich Town in the coming years.”</p>



<h2>Tractor Boys previously beat some of Europe’s top teams</h2>



<p>Ipswich Town was previously founded way back in 1878 but did not officially become a professional team until 1936. While not currently being a Premier League club, the Tractor Boys have an interesting history in European competitions. They have previously beaten perennial powerhouses AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.</p>

<p>Despite the impressive victories in previous decades, Ipswich has remained outside of the English top flight in recent years. Things, however, are starting to look up for the club after they just earned promotion to the Championship last year. The team finished the 2022/23 campaign second in the third-tiered <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/english-league-one-tv-schedule/">League One</a>.</p>



<p>Although they were only just promoted to the second division, Ipswich looks primed to move quickly through the English soccer pyramid. They are currently just one point out of second place in the standings, which would give them automatic promotion. However, the Tractor Boys could also qualify for the top flight through the upcoming playoffs as well.</p>



<h2>Ipswich Town joins pack of clubs with US investors</h2>



<p>Ipswich’s recent surge through the English soccer ranks made them attractive to the new investors. Nevertheless, these financiers being from the U.S. is hardly surprising. Wealthy Americans have been taking their cash to English clubs more frequently in recent years.</p>



<p>Americans own <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/pro-rel-fueling-american-investment-in-english-soccer-teams-20240208-WST-488318.html">37% of all professional soccer teams</a>. This influx in U.S. investors will also likely not slow down following the Ipswich deal.</p>



<p>Americans are currently looking into <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/rochdale-faces-liquidation-as-us-investors-interested-in-club-20240228-WST-492007.html">financing an agreement</a> to purchase Rochdale. The National League side is experiencing financial hardship and face possible liquidation if they cannot find new investors. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/brentford-tv-schedule/">Brentford</a> also could see Americans <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/us-investors-likely-to-target-premier-league-side-brentford-20240221-WST-490854.html">enter the fray</a> as well. The club’s current owner, Matthew Benham, is welcoming new foreign investment.</p>

US investors purchase stake in Ipswich for $132 million

English Championship club Ipswich Town has announced that an American investment firm is set to complete a 40% stake in the club.

<p>To get ready for the 2024–25 season, Celtic will be visiting the United States this summer. The Scottish team had already hinted that they would be visiting the US.</p>



<p>There have been hints that the Parkhead club could be planning a summer 2024 American preseason trip. Pictured under three US landmarks was a message on the club’s social media platforms featuring Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales.</p>



<p>The players were shown rejoicing under the description of “Summer 2024” in the image, which was marked with a simple ‘soon’ emoji. Also, Celtic could do a three-city U.S. tour this summer, according to the mysterious <a href="https://twitter.com/CelticFC/status/1769363065298944203" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media post</a>.</p>

<p>This summer, the Celts will be <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/chelsea-vs-celtic-tickets-on-sale-for-friendly-at-notre-dame/">touring the United States</a> in search of their first win against Manchester City. The two meetings between the two teams ended in draws, so the match is sure to be a thrilling one. The UNC Children’s Hospital will receive the proceeds from the match. There was a donation of $150,000 to the medical center last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Celtic will face Major League Soccer team DC United at Audi Field in Washington, DC, on July 20 in the third and final confirmed match of the Bhoys’ U.S. Summer Tour. Among the most decorated American teams, DC United has 13 domestic and international titles between them. <p>Preseason travel to the United States is on the schedule for Arsenal when it makes a tour of the US. The Gunners will embark on their 2024-25 season preparations in the summer of 2024 with another tour to the United States, as previously planned.</p>



<p>This summer, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> will return to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles to face Manchester United, just as they did last year. Along with that, the team has announced that they will play Liverpool in Philadelphia. So far, the Gunners’ summer 2024 schedule consists of only two games. Both of those matchups feature behemoths from the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/when-do-tickets-go-on-sale-for-liverpool-arsenal-and-man-utd-20240224-WST-491373.html">Premier League</a>.</p>

<p>Los Angeles, California’s SoFi Stadium will host a match between Arsenal and Manchester United on July 27. Last summer, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, the two teams squared off.</p>



<p>The next stop is the stadium that Stan Kroenke, the Arsenal owner, has a controlling stake in. Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is Arsenal’s next stop on Wednesday, July 31. When the match takes place, it will be at Eagles Stadium in Philadelphia, where the Gunners will meet Liverpool of the NFL.</p>



<p>When it comes to staging big soccer games, both of these sites have expertise. Arsenal, for instance, played at SoFi Stadium during the summer of 2017. The stadium is also owned by Stan Kroenke, who is the owner of Arsenal. For the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League, he constructed it as their team’s headquarters. Copa America and 2026 World Cup matches will be held at SoFi Stadium this summer.</p>



<p>Lincoln Financial Stadium, where Arsenal will play in 2026, is also a World Cup host location. Surprisingly, Lincoln Financial Field will host its 35th soccer game with this friendly match between Liverpool and Arsenal.</p>



<h2>Arsenal speaks on upcoming US tour</h2>

<p>Over the years, the two teams have played 34 friendly matches. Unfortunately for Los Blancos, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/barcelona-tickets-for-us-tour-schedule-dates-host-cities/">Barcelona</a> are boasting an impressive 21 wins, 9 draws, and 4 losses, contributing to an 85-41 goal difference. </p>



<p>Between 1906 and 1943, a total of 22 games were played, with 8 in Madrid and 14 in Barcelona. These games were also part of the Champion Clubs Tournament in 1928, the Historic Clubs Tournament in 1948, the Ramon de Carranza in 1969, and the Venezuelan President’s Cup in 1982.&nbsp;</p>



<p>U.S. meetings between the two teams have occurred four times, with Barça coming out on top the first three times. One was a 3-2 triumph in Miami on July 30, 2017, with Gerard Pique scoring the game-winning goal. The following year, on July 23, 2022, Raphinha scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory in Las Vegas. Dembele, Ferran Torres, and Fermin Lopez scored the goals in a 3-0 victory last summer in Texas.&nbsp;</p>
