<p>San Diego Wave FC owner Ron Burkle has announced that he reached a sale of the side. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a> (NWSL) side only launched in the summer of 2021. After quickly creating the team, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/san-diego-wave-tv-schedule/">Wave FC</a> began league play in the spring of 2022.</p>



<p>Despite Burkle only owning the club for less than three years, the billionaire is set to earn quite a return on his investment. Burkle previously paid a $2 million NWSL expansion fee when creating the club in 2021. Nevertheless, <em>Sportico</em> is reporting that the Levine Leichtman family will pay around $113 million to completely take over the team.</p>



<p>The deal, however, splits up into two separate payments. The news outlet claims that the new ownership will now first pay $35 million for 35% of the club. Then, the family will purchase the remaining 65% of the Wave following the 2024 season. This second payment is expected to be $78 million.</p>



<p>“We are proud of the unprecedented success we have had as an expansion team and I am confident that [the Levine Leichtman] family’s investment will contribute to the growth of our team and the San Diego community,” Burkle recently told <em><a href="https://www.sportico.com/business/team-sales/2024/burkle-sell-san-diego-wave-113-million-1234770859/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sportico</a></em>.</p>



<h2>San Diego Wave sale smashes previous NWSL record fee for club</h2>



<p>The massive $113 million deal is set to become the most expensive agreement involving an NWSL club. RAJ Sports previously held the record in the league when they brought the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/portland-thorns-tv-schedule/">Portland Thorns</a> earlier this year. The deal to purchase the Pacific Northwest team was valued at $63 million.</p>

<p>While the Wave is a relatively new club, they have an impressive record in NWSL play. The Californian side finished third in the inaugural campaign and made it to the semifinals of the 2022 playoffs. They then finished atop the regular season table in their second season in the division. The Wave is currently led by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a> superstar Alex Morgan.</p>



<p>“We are excited to join forces with San Diego Wave FC and help build upon the impressive foundation established by Ron Burkle,” <a href="https://www.sportico.com/business/team-sales/2024/burkle-sell-san-diego-wave-113-million-1234770859/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> new owner Lauren Leichtman. “This investment aligns with our values and vision for supporting initiatives that empower women and foster opportunities for aspiring female athletes.”</p>



<p>According to sources at the aforementioned news source, the sale of the club has received league approval. NWSL commissioner has already made an official statement on the agreement. “We’re thrilled to welcome the Levine Leichtman family to the ownership group of the San Diego Wave,” <a href="https://www.sportico.com/business/team-sales/2024/burkle-sell-san-diego-wave-113-million-1234770859/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Berman.</p>



<h2>Agreement in place ahead of 2024 season opener</h2>



<p>The deal comes just days before the start of the 2024 NWSL season. The Thorns and KC Current kick off the campaign on Saturday, March 16th. However, the Wave will feature in the Challenge Cup the prior day. The fixture pits the NWSL championship winner (<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/gotham-fc-tv-schedule/">NY/NJ Gotham</a>) against the club with the best record of the 2023 regular season (Wave).</p>



<p>NWSL officials <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/nwsl-kicks-off-new-era-aboard-a-landmark-broadcast-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previously announced</a> a huge new broadcasting deal with a plethora of partners. The four-year deal, which nets the league $10 million per season, is set to be aired on Paramount+, ESPN+, ABC, the ION Network, and Amazon Prime Video. The division’s previous media rights deal was only worth $1.5 million each year.</p>

<p>Mexico is making frequent appearances in the United States throughout 2024 to play friendlies. In total, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/mexico-national-team-tv-schedule/">Mexico</a> has five games in the United States in 2024 that are strictly friendlies. Of course, <em>El Tri</em> is also <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/mexico-tickets-for-copa-america-schedule-dates-host-cities-20240229-WST-492176.html">playing in the Copa America</a> in the United States, which guarantees three group-stage games. Therefore, Mexico is playing at least eight games in the United States in 2024.</p>



<p>Five cities are hosting Mexico for its tour of friendlies. Some of these are regular hosts of the Mexico national team. Yet, none are hosting Mexico in the group-stage games at the Copa America. Therefore, fans from various areas will have the opportunity to see Jaime Lozano’s side. </p>



<p>The first chance will be directly after the European club calendar at the end of May into early June. Mexico is playing three games as a last-minute tune-up before beginning the Copa America just two weeks later. Fittingly, Mexico is playing against three teams from South America who are also competing in the Copa America. That starts against Bolivia, which is in Group C in Copa America. Yet, the two major games for Mexico follow the friendly against Bolivia. Mexico is playing <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/mexicos-two-popular-pre-copa-america-friendlies-revealed-20231220-WST-478778.html">Uruguay and Brazil</a> to gear up ahead of the tournament.</p>



<h2>List of Mexico friendlies in the United States</h2>



<p>After the Copa America, Mexico scheduled friendlies against New Zealand and Canada, which are also in the United States. Unlike the friendlies against the South American opponents, these friendlies will not be as big of a draw for the neutral. Therefore, Mexico is playing these friendlies in places where El Tri has droves of fans: Los Angeles, CA, and Arlington, TX.</p>

<p>Official tickets for the games <em>before</em> the Copa America go on sale in the coming weeks. Tickets for the game in College Station go on sale on April 5 at 10 a.m.</p>

<h2>More Mexican friendlies Stateside</h2>



<p>The announcement of these five games in the United States continues a trend of Mexico playing in the United States. Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the marketing arm of Major League Soccer, is in charge of organizing friendlies for the Mexican national team. It has therefore played the majority of its friendlies in the United States. Since 2020, Mexico has played just two friendlies at home. By comparison, Mexico has played 19 friendlies in the United States. </p>



<p>Regarding the five venues where Mexico is playing, El Tri has played at each of those stadiums before except one. Kyle Field on the campus of Texas A&amp;M University has never hosted a soccer game, and it may never have a game of the magnitude Brazil and Mexico will bring. </p>

Mexico announces five friendlies in United States in 2024

Mexico is making frequent appearances in the United States throughout 2024 to play friendlies against top opposition.

<p>The USA men’s national team is looking to defend its Nations League title with a squad that consists of a talented class of players. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/usmnt-tv-schedule/">USMNT</a> defeated Trinidad and Tobago to clinch a spot in the final four of the Nations League. In doing so, Gregg Berhalter’s side also punched a ticket to the Copa America in the summer of 2024. However, this squad will have its eyes set on another trophy in an era of success. </p>



<p>In the semifinals, the United States will face Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz stunned Canada in the quarterfinals, and the Caribbean nation is bringing several top-class players to the semifinals. Leon Bailey, Michail Antonio and Demarai Gray have drastically changed the outlook of the Jamaica national team. In the other semifinal, Mexico is facing a Panama side that thrashed Costa in the quarterfinals. Regardless of the opponent, the USMNT faces a tall task to defend its title. </p>



<p>The squad that will represent the USMNT in those games is strong. Head coach Gregg Berhalter had a difficult choice when it came to selecting certain positions. The striker position, for example, presented a challenge because of the success Americans have had this season. Josh Sargent and Ricardo Pepi made the cut based on their outputs. However, Berhalter named players like Haji Wright, Jordan Pefok and Brandon Vazquez who have each had successful months building into this squad. </p>



<h2>Reyna and Adams make the cut despite playing time concerns</h2>



<p>Gio Reyna will represent the USA in the squad for the Nations League this month. This year has been a challenging one for Reyna, who has been devoid of minutes at both Borussia Dortmund and Nottingham Forest, where the midfielder is on loan. However, Berhalter, who had an infamous row with Reyna after the World Cup, said Reyna has proven enough with the national team to warrant a selection for the Nations League squad.</p>



<p>Similarly, Tyler Adams has yet to make his return from a lengthy injury after moving from Leeds in the summer. However, Cherries manager Andoni Iraola has said Adams is nearing his return to action, and that is enough to bring Adams into the USMNT squad. Berhalter said he does not expect Adams to play the full 90 as he would often do when fit. Moreover, starting may not even be an option. Yet, his status does allow him to reacquaint himself with the national team.</p>



<p>As expected, players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Antonee Robinson will feature prominently at the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/concacaf-nations-league-schedule/">CONCACAF Nations League</a> Finals. <h2>Betis is a familiar opponent for Manchester United</h2>



<p>The English side was always going to play a game at Snapdragon Stadium. As part of the upcoming <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/manchester-united-planning-summer-return-to-the-united-states-20240110-WST-482401.html">shirt sponsorship deal with Snapdragon</a>, Manchester United agreed to play two friendlies at the stadium in San Diego. Then, in 2024/25, Snapdragon will replace TeamViewer as the sponsor on the front of the team’s shirt. Snapdragon Stadium has become a popular host of soccer. In addition to hosting Manchester United against Wrexham last summer, the venue hosts the San Diego Wave of the NWSL. Come 2025, San Diego FC will use the stadium when it joins Major League Soccer. </p>



<p>Real Betis has become one of the better teams in La Liga over recent seasons. That has led to qualification for Europe and more demand from teams to play Betis in a friendly. Manchester United has been on the opposing side of Real Betis in both European play and off-season clashes. The first was during a winter break in the 2022/23 campaign. Real Betis defeated Manchester United in Spain. Then, the two met later that season in the Europa League Round of 16. Manchester United won both legs to advance on aggregate by a score of 5-1. </p>



<p>This game will feature many of the same faces in those European clashes. For example, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Antony scored in that tie. Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has ample experience against Manchester United, too. Pellegrini is the former manager of Manchester City, and he made way for Pep Guardiola. Pellegrini has an impressive record of five wins, five draws, and five losses against the Red Devils in all competitions. </p>

<p>This summer, Manchester United’s three friendlies in the United States are part of a busy soccer scene. Not only are Arsenal and Liverpool tagging along, but Manchester City, Wrexham, and Chelsea are planning friendlies in the United States. Then, the Copa America brings the best national teams from North and South America to the United States. As the summer nears, more clubs will announce plans to play friendlies in the USA.</p>

Manchester United is making a return to San Diego and Snapdragon Stadium to play a friendly this summer against Real Betis.

<p>Daylight saving time has come in the USA, but those in Europe still live on Coordinated Universal Time standards, or UTC. Therefore, the clocks changed in the United States early on Sunday, March 10. Americans had to ‘spring forward’ one hour. The time difference between New York and London is traditionally five hours. However, for most of March, that shrinks down to four hours.</p>



<p>Clocks across the pond change on the morning of March 31, the last Sunday of March. They will enter their summertime clock, such as British Summer Time (BST), when the sun rises and sets later in the day. That difference between the USA and Europe for daylight savings only started in 2007. The United States elected to ‘spring forward’ earlier and ‘fall back’ later. Consequently, daylight saving in the USA lasts 238 days. By comparison, daylight saving in Europe is 210 days. </p>



<p>For a time, the USA and Europe shared their daylight saving time. Yet, the United States has since amended when it starts and ends the time change. The reason for this is based on the economy. Energy usage for heating and electricity allows people to save money on utilities when the sun is up later. Also, economists in the United States have said that people tend to shop and spend more time outside when the sun is up later. For example, participation in golf goes up exponentially when the sun sets later.</p>



<h2>Daylight saving in Europe changes soccer times in USA</h2>



<p>Europeans do not have that benefit, and it does impact Americans who follow sports from Europe. Domestic leagues, cups, and UEFA club competitions do not cater to Americans’ schedules. Therefore, the general times for fixtures in European soccer ‘change’ in the United States. That unfortunate reality popped up this past weekend. It also affects the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">UEFA Champions League</a>, which sets up more Champions League <em>evenings</em> compared to just afternoons.</p>

<p>On the east coast of the United States, the Champions League games midweek start at 4 p.m. ET during the difference in the time changes. In Europe, these games start at 8 p.m. UK time, as usual. On March 31st, though, the time changes for the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other European countries. Therefore, the UEFA Champions League evening will return to their 3 p.m. ET starting times. For some, the brief difference will present an opportunity to watch the UEFA Champions League without the lingering presence of their job.</p>



<h2>Any potential changes to the time changes?</h2>



<p>Adjusting the laws on daylight saving time is constantly in the rumblings for the United States and Europe. Most critics argue any financial benefits of changing the clocks twice a year are minimal. At the same time, studies have shown a mental and physical toll on people when they must adjust the clocks. Despite those protests, states cannot legally change their laws about following daylight saving time without government approval. Despite the US Senate passing bills, there will be no changes until the House of Representatives and the President sign off. </p>



<p>For now, the United States will adhere to standard time during winter or year-round.</p>

Why is daylight saving time different in the US than Europe?

Daylight saving has come in the USA, but those in Europe still live on Coordinated Universal Time standards, or UTC.

<p>Joining its men’s side with a tour across the pond, the Wrexham Women are coming to the United States to play several friendlies. In partnership with financial services company Ally, the Wrexham Women’s side is organizing a <em>Wrex Coast Tour. </em>While the club did not elaborate on dates, venues, or possible opponents, it is still a historic milestone. The AFC Wrexham Women have never played in a summer tour akin to what it will do in 2024. </p>



<p>The tour’s goal is to capitalize on the popularity of Wrexham as a brand and build Wrexham Women into one of the world’s most popular women’s teams. As a club, Wrexham has become one of the most popular clubs in the world, particularly for its stature. This is especially true in the United States. For example, the Wrexham men’s side came to the United States last summer, drawing major crowds. In total, over 110,000 people came to watch four games when the side played in the United States. The highlight was over 50,000 people watching Wrexham face Chelsea in Chapel Hill, NC.</p>



<p>The Wrexham Women may not draw crowds that large in the United States. Regardless, this tour presents a major chance for Wrexham to build its presence in the United States. With a growing women’s soccer scene in the United States leading the globe, Wrexham is joining droves of other clubs in coming to the United States this summer.</p>

<p>“Beyond all of the wins at home, this tour is a fantastic way for Wrexham AFC Women to show the world what they’re made of,” Wrexham owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds said.</p>



<h2>Wrexham Women tour in United States adds to popularity</h2>



<p>While the Wrexham men take the headlines because of the <em>Welcome to Wrexham </em>documentary series, the Wrexham Women are popular in their own right. The women’s team had their episode in the documentary that aired on FX. Traveling to the United States will increase exposure as the club fights for constant success and promotion to better leagues and competitions. </p>



<p>Gemma Owen, the head of Women’s Football Operations at Wrexham, spoke to <em>World Soccer Talk</em> last year. She said the possibility of the women’s team touring the United States would be ideal. However, at the time, Owen did not elaborate on the feasibility of that, but she said it would be a great <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/wrexham-women-interested-in-playing-against-nwsl-teams-20231002-WST-459757.html">opportunity to play NWSL teams</a>, for example. </p>

<p>The Wrexham Women are now coming to the United States to play fixtures. There is no discussion as to when and where the games will happen. The tour’s name, the <em>Wrex Coast Tour</em>, could indicate the side is going to the western part of the United States. That is speculation, though. The Wrexham men’s team is also going under the name of <em>Wrex Coast Tour</em>, and the side has <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/chelseas-summer-us-tour-includes-games-against-wrexham-america/">a game against Chelsea in Santa Clara, CA</a>, among others.</p>



<h2>Success in the Welsh first division</h2>



<p>In the 2023/24 campaign, Wrexham plays in the Adran Premier, Wales’s top division for women’s soccer. As one of the top three teams after 14 league games, Wrexham qualified for the championship phase in the division. Wrexham will now face the women’s teams from Cardiff City, Swansea, and Aberystwyth&nbsp;Town. Each team plays home and away against each other to determine a league champion.</p>



<p>Unfortunately, Wrexham did not qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League, as Cardiff City finished atop the league table after 14 games. Owen affirmed five months ago that qualifying for that European competition is the club’s top ambition.</p>

Wrexham Women announce historic summer tour in United States

Joining its men's side with a tour across the pond, the Wrexham Women are coming to the United States to play several friendlies.

<p>The USA Women’s National Team slugged out a 1-0 win over Brazil in the W Gold Cup Final on Sunday night. Lindsey Horan’s goal in first-half stoppage time ensured the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/uswnt-tv-schedule/">USWNT</a> won the inaugural tournament. The game at Snapdragon Stadium welcomed 31,528 fans, which was the largest crowd in the United States for a women’s event hosted by CONCACAF. The trophy ensures the United States remains atop the women’s national teams in the Americas after a spell of disappointing results. It is also the latest trophy after the USWNT’s earliest exit in Women’s World Cup history in the summer of 2023. </p>



<p>Brazil and the USWNT played a physical first half, with fouls rampant on both sides. Neither side delivered an overly impressive first half in terms of chances. Yet, the USWNT did enough to ensure it went into the halftime break with the lead. Emily Fox had the ball on the right side of the field. A lofted cross from 30 yards away reached a dangerous area on the far corner of the six-yard box. Lindsey Horan, serving as the USWNT’s captain, <a href="https://twitter.com/AttackingThird/status/1766993886272966988" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rose among the Brazilian defenders</a>. She nodded the ball against the face of the goal. Brazil goalkeeper Luciana was helpless as the ball nestled into the corner of the goal.</p>



<p>Lynn Williams thought she doubled the USWNT’s lead in the second half. After 79 minutes, the substitute had the ball in the back of the net. However, she was offside on the original pass that played her in alone. As a result, Brazil remained behind by a single goal.</p>



<p>Yet, the stout USWNT defense had a sensational evening. Naomi Girma and Tierna Davidson anchored the defense as center-backs. As a result, the Americans did not allow a single shot on target from Brazil for the entire game. Despite 11 efforts from Brazil, Alyssa Naeher did not need to perform heroics <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/usa-advances-to-w-gold-cup-final-after-rain-soaked-penalty-win/">like she did in the semifinal</a>. </p>

<h2>W Gold Cup win over Brazil gives USA another trophy</h2>



<p>This win returns the USWNT to a familiar spot: lifting trophies after finals against top opposition. For a brief period, critics pointed to recent hiccups that past USWNT teams would never succumb to. For example, the Women’s World Cup exit and the recent loss to Mexico in this W Gold Cup raised question marks. Regardless of all that, the United States claimed its 15th title in women’s CONCACAF events. </p>



<p>The success also sets the tone for when Emma Hayes shows up as the head coach in May of this year. The current Chelsea FC Women’s side boss will have massive expectations when she leads the Stars and Stripes from the bench. </p>



<h2>Tournament awards</h2>



<p>Jaedyn Shaw, the forward who scored four goals for the USWNT in this competition, won the Golden Ball as the <a href="https://twitter.com/AttackingThird/status/1767041076605391294" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tournament’s best player</a>. Also, Alyssa Naeher, the hero of the semifinal shootout win against Canada, won the Golden Glove. The United States will not reconvene as a team for one month. It is playing in the SheBelieves Cup on April 6. Twila Kilgore will lead the United States against Japan in the semifinal game. Then, the USWNT could face Brazil in the final in a rematch of the W Gold Cup Final. </p>
