Alternative Premier League, Gameweek 29

alternative route Alternative Premier League, Gameweek 29

It’s amazing what a couple of weeks can do. Week 27 saw City ahead of United, but Week 29 not only sees the order reversed, it’s seen United open up a bit of a gap.

Manchester United’s demolition of a very poor Wolves team saw them score very handsomely, and with the help of the away win bonus, their score rocketed up to 8.28 – the highest score of the week. While City did well to come from behind to beat 5th placed Chelsea, their slender winning margin only merited 6.27 points, a total which means that United have outscored their rivals for the fourth week in a row. The gap at the top has now opened up to 6.20 points, a difference which means that even if City win and United lose their next games, the order could still remain as it is.

Liverpool’s league form has continued to suffer, and with one win and four defeats in their last five games they sit a lowly 17th in the APL form table. Despite this poor run they still hold onto 6th place, although Newcastle, and from nowhere Swansea, are now breathing down their necks. The side from Wales picked up 8.12 points, their biggest single score of the season, as they shocked Fulham 0-3 at Craven Cottage.

Swansea’s rise up the league has shown how important away wins can be. Before Christmas, Swansea had failed to pick up a single away win and were sitting in a lower-mid table position, but since winning 0-2 at Villa Park in Week 20 they now have 4 away wins on the board and are sitting pretty in 8th.

Spurs’ last-gasp equaliser, and score of 3.24, at home to Stoke means that they remain close behind Arsenal in the race for 3rd. Before Rafael Van der Vaart’s late header, Spurs were looking at a fourth defeat in a row and a Week 29 score of 1.35, a score which would have left them on 136.36 and 4.99 points away from Arsenal.

Despite their fifth win in five games, the Gunners slipped behind United in the form table. But the fact that Arsenal are in 2nd with 35.37 points from their last five games, and Spurs are 14th with 15.77 points from their last five games shows you what contrasting months the two teams have had.

Another unlikely team hitting form at the right time is Blackburn Rovers. The men from Ewood Park have suffered only one defeat in the last five and have opened up some space between themselves and the rest of the strugglers. Their latest win at home to Sunderland has seen them move 11.45 points ahead of bottom place and 4.35 ahead of QPR in 17th.
