
<p>Morocco’s surprising win over Belgium was not the biggest upset of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/">World Cup</a>. In fact, it might not even be the biggest upset of the day.</p>



<p>Yet, it figures to be one of the biggest upsets in Morocco history. It may also be one of the most influential ones as well. </p>



<p>Morocco’s two second-half goals may become the Atlas Lions’ main catalyst for a deep run into the later rounds of the World Cup.</p>



<p>Not only did they show its might in front of a frenzied Doha crowd and send a message to the rest of the world, but they showed their attack was not stagnant(unlike some other African nations). Their win showed the talent they have and the deep run they can make as a date with Canada looms.</p>



<h5>Ziyech leads Morocco to victory</h5>



<p>No one expected Morocco to give Belgium a hard time; much less beat them. However, that was what they did early in the first half. Despite the looming threat of Belgium’s infamous counter-attacks, Morocco still got chances early. </p>



<p>Achraf Hakimi blasted a shot narrowly over Thibaut Courtois and the cross bar, and Ziyech nearly scored a great free-kick before a VAR intervention. But there was still definite belief that <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/morocco-national-team-tv-schedule/">Morocco</a> could break through and score among some hopeful fans.</p>



<p>And finally, Morocco scored the game’s first goal. After Thomas Meunier fouled a Moroccan defender in the left flank, Abdelhamid Sarid belted a smooth free-kick into the bottom left corner, catching Courtois off his line and giving Morocco a big advantage.</p>



<p>Belgium’s chances to equalize grew as the clocked clicked to the 90th minute. Jan Vertonghen nearly scored with a strong header, but his attempt fell just left of the target. With time running out, Belgium decided to fling the midfield towards the box, which ended disastrously.</p>



<p>Munir took advantage of Belgium’s high lines and hit a big goal kick to Ziyech, who threw the defenders out of place. </p>



<p>The Chelsea winger slid the ball to Zakaria Aboukhlal, who placed his screamer of a shot just out of reach for Courtois to double Morocco’s lead. Morocco 2, Belgium 0.</p>



<h5>Munir saves the day</h5>



<p>Morocco would likely be down 3-0 if not for the Herculean efforts of Al-Wehda keeper Munir. He had a number of good saves to keep Belgium off the scoresheet, including monstrous saves against Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi. </p>

<p>His performance was marred by an unfortunate mix-up just seconds before the match started. Yassine Bounou, Sevilla star and usual starting keeper was spotted singing the national anthem and shaking hands with Belgium. Yet when the game started, it took BBC commentators 38 minutes to figure out<a href="https:\/\/www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/football/mysterious-scenes-as-morocco-s-bono-lines-up-sings-anthem-then-disappears-before-kick-off/ar-AA14C1zL"> Bono wasn’t in goal.</a></p>



<p>It took many by surprise, especially TV analysts who falsely given Bono credit for Munir’s incredible saves. Officials confirmed Bono had an eye problem just seconds before the match started and had to leave to the match.</p>



<p>If Bono cannot make it for Morocco’s group stage finale against Canada, Munir proved himself to be an above-average replacement. His crucial saves kept Morocco in the match, and his big goal kick gave Morocco its last goal to kill the game.</p>



<h4>Morocco’s wing play leaves out En-Nesyri</h4>



<p>For much of the match, Youssef En-Nesyri was on an island. No matter how many runs he made, how far he dropped back in the midfield, or even if he was open in the box; En-Nesyri could seem to get the ball.</p>



<p>He only had just 12 touches in 73 minutes, nearly a fifth of Ziyech’s total touches.  Morocco’s winger-oriented offense left En-Nesyri without the ball. Although it worked, the Sevilla striker was not a big reason why it did.</p>



<p>It’s been a trend for En-Nesyri. He only had 21 touches in 81 minutes against Croatia, and just 13 touches in 67 minutes against Chile. He did score against Georgia, but it may have been because Ziyech was forced into a playmaking role in Morocco’s 3-4-3. </p>



<p>En-Nesyri got frustrated. Early in the second half, he tried linking up on runs with Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal, but didn’t get the ball a lot. He made wild gestures and big sighs when he could not make an impact on offense. </p>



<p>When Abderrazak Hamdallah replaced him in the 73rd minute, he looked less than please. Canada’s strong center-backs could frustrate him even more if Morocco looks towards the wings for inspiration.</p>

A lot of things went right in Morocco's big 2-0 win over Belgium. Hakim Ziyech and Morocco excelled going into matchday three against Canada.

<p>In the first half, things seemed at least somewhat even between Morocco and Croatia in their World Cup opener. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/croatia-the-darlings-of-2018-seek-redemption-at-qatar-2022-20221116-WST-408257.html?adlt=strict&amp;toWww=1&amp;redig=65B7B8BF557F48C3A9E6552840FAF2CC">Croatia</a> threatened Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou from long range as usual. Luka Modric had to be tightly marked several yards away from the goal, and his midfield partner Ivan Perisic’s outside-the-box screamer cleared the crossbar by inches.</p>



<p>Morocco had some of its own chances as well. Hakim Ziyech flew past Croatia left-back Borna Sosa and swung a great cross to Youssef En-Nesyri, who timed his jump wrong and couldn’t get a jump on the ball.</p>



<p>Croatia ended up dominating by the end of the first half. Bounou saved a dangerous Nikola Vlasic attempt, and Modric nearly scored from range but sent his shot over the crossbar.</p>



<p>In the second half, Morocco came close yet again. Noussair Mazraoui dove for a floated ball near the six-yard box, but Dominik Livakovic’s solid save stopped the chance of a Morocco goal. Mazraoui injured himself badly in that play, as he left the game on a stretcher.</p>



<p>Morocco forced Livakovic into an excellent save once again when Achraf Hakimi belted a screamer from beyond the box. Livakovic couldn’t hold on because of the ball’s speed, but the save effectively killed Morocco’s momentum.</p>

<p>Morocco and Croatia both had their chances in the match. Both Bounou and Livakovic made excellent saves. It puts Morocco in a good position going into a duel with Belgium on Sunday.</p>



<h5>Ziyech and Mazraoui return to Morocco</h5>



<p>Although his cool demeanor may not show it, Morocco’s draw against Croatia was <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/08/31/regragui-appointed-morocco-coach-ahead-of-world-cup/">manager Walid Regragui’s</a> first-ever World Cup match. He replaced Vahid Halilhodzic in early August. Even then, he quickly found a feel for the team right away. He built solid relationships with the players, unlike his predecessor, and introduced a high-octane offense. Hopefully, that gives the side a chance in what is a tough World Cup group.</p>



<p>Not only did he bring in more goals, but he brought in more players. Regragui brought back Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech and Bayern’s Noussair Mazraoui. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/halilhodzic-rules-out-morocco-world-cup-recall-for-ziyech-and-mazraoui-20220422-CMS-381134.html">Halilhodzic’s comments to the press</a> isolated both from the national team. </p>



<p>Almost immediately, Ziyech acclimated himself to the new-look squad. He scored a great goal in a friendly against Georgia. Then, he put in solid performances against Chile and Paraguay. Now, he put in a decent shift against Croatia, sending in great crosses sorely missed by the <em>Atlas Lions</em>.</p>



<p>Mazraoui also had solid games in recent friendlies. Mazraoui gives an extra element of danger on the flank, something that Regragui’s <a href="https:\/\/www.beinsports.com/en/african-champions-league/news/football-wydad-casablanca-win-caf-champions-l/700148?adlt=strict&amp;toWww=1&amp;redig=30F44D5C22D74B67BC4401F06FDEFB3F">previous</a> teams love to exploit.</p>



<h5>Amrabat shuts down the Croatian midfield</h5>



<p>Sofyane Amrabat is one of Fiorentina’s finest midfielders and a key cog to the <em>Atlas Lions</em>. Effectively, the midfielder is a manager’s dream. His accurate passing, defensive capability and physicality add reliability to the Moroccan midfield. Amrabat isn’t technically gifted, but he adds a tenacity that can’t be matched.</p>



<p>Amrabat has grown into a vital part of the Moroccan team. He played 396 minutes at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and played in all 180 minutes of Morocco’s <a href="https:\/\/www.goal.com/en/match/morocco-v-congo-dr/4rzu3r3l1i478t5gcrm5rn4lw?adlt=strict&amp;toWww=1&amp;redig=A9C21119F44244EBBC3D1D15C40C8722">two-legged tie with DR Congo</a>. With the firepower Morocco has at hand, Amrabat can take a defensive role and focus on crushing counter-attacks like he did against Croatia.</p>



<p>In his masterclass against Croatia, Amrabat had 56 touches, 39 passes, and a whopping nine recoveries. The defensive midfielder also made some crucial clearances while stifling Andrej Kramaric and the Croatian offense. Amrabat frequently does get in trouble with the referee, but his reliability on possession makes him too much of an asset to waste.</p>



<h2>Morocco potential attacking depth issues at World Cup</h2>



<p>Not only does Morocco boast stars like Youssef En-Nesyri and Hakimi, but they added Mazraoui and Ziyech to the squad. Yet at the Al Bayt Stadium, Morocco looked like a team stuck in their search for goals. </p>

<p>Although there were good chances that came from Morocco’s attack, they could not wrap up those chances and kill the game.</p>



<p>Things got even worse when the game opened up in its dying minutes. Fatigued Croatia defenders(all four played all 90 minutes) started slacking off, and the wings started to look more and more open. Yet for some reason, Morocco looked lost in front of goal.</p>



<p>Morocco looked shaky to say the least. <em>La Masia </em>product Abde Ezzalzouli lost five ground duels and only touched the ball eight times in 25 minutes. Target forward Abderrazak Hamdallah didn’t win the headers Morocco so desperately needed. Evem in Regragrui’s three chosen forwards, there are still imperfections.</p>



<p>En-Nesyri hasn’t scored a league goal this season for Sevilla, and he’s scored just twice in the entire season. Ziyech has played in only five league games for Chelsea. Yet Regragui has other options as well. Zakaria Aboukhlal has scored three goals and assisted thrice as a right winger for Toulouse. Anass Zaroury has scored four times and assisted thrice for Burnley. However, they are unproven at national level. Regragui needs his offense to kick in as they face Belgium in a crucial match on Sunday.</p>

<p>North Africa’s dominance in the CAF Champions League is especially prominent over recent years. Egyptian side Al Ahly’s back-to-back titles is just the beginning.</p>
<p>From Cameroonian club dominance to Al Ahly’s impressive successes, the CAF Champions League produces remarkable moments. Africa’s premier club soccer tournament developed numerous soccer stars like Vincent Enyeama and Hossam Hassan. It gives clubs from all over Africa a chance to show their skills.</p>
<p>Yet, North African clubs own a monopoly over the CAF Champions League in recent years. Since 2016, elite North African clubs triumphed in the premier club tournament on the continent. This season, Al Ahly enters as the two-time holders of the competition.</p>
<p>The stranglehold by the region is not simply quality or commitment discrepancies. As seen, AFCON, as well as other club competitions, can <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/16999874" target="_blank" rel="noopener">produce underdogs</a> that bring trophies home.</p>
<p>The differences lie elsewhere in regards to North Africa’s dominance in the CAF Champions League.</p>
<h3>Explaining North Africa’s dominance in the competition</h3>
<p>For reference, we designate Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco and Libya as North Africa. These are the nations that span the Mediterranean Sea and fall under the Union of North African Football, or UNAF.</p>
<p>North African club soccer certainly trumps other African clubs. In the competition’s near-60-year history, North African clubs won 33 titles, more than all other nation’s clubs combined. Trophies are one thing. The debate stems from <em>how</em> the North African sides dominate.</p>
<p>The simple answer would be to say skill or quality. Looking at the African Cup of Nations, UNAF nations do hold a lead in terms of number of champions. Egypt (7), Algeria (2), Morocco (1) and Tunisia (1) account for 11 titles. UNAF has more than any other region of Africa.</p>
<p>This is impressive, yes, but it is only a narrow lead over West Africa’s 10 titles and Central Africa’s eight. Meanwhile, the club scene runs through North Africa, and that much is undisputed.</p>
<h5>North African clubs standing out</h5>
<p>Journalist Maher Mezahi writes this dominance on the club scene exists because of the funding of North African sides.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“The simple truth is that many North African clubs possess sizeable budgets, allowing for the construction of infrastructure and better player acquisition,”</em> he wrote in a <a href="https://mg.co.za/article/2019-04-30-the-secret-of-north-africas-football-dominance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 article</a>.</p></blockquote>
<p>North Africa has more private investors investing in clubs so teams can spend more. Club infrastructure via training grounds and stadiums draws in players. Of course, these facilities are wildly expensive for the most lavish of options. Many African clubs do not have the funding to support something of this nature.</p>
<p>Former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Pitso Mosimane told KICKOFF <a href="https://www.kickoff.com/news/articles/world-news/categories/news/caf-champions-league/mamelodi-sundowns-coach-pitso-mosimane-e/593965" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his thoughts</a> on North African clubs’ dominance.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“The big thing about North Africans is all about the intimidation. It is about how the officials handle the stress and the pressure,”</em> Mosimane said.</p></blockquote>
<p>Fan bases in North Africa are very energetic and sometimes hard to handle.</p>
<p>North Africa’s dominance comes from a mix of both money and intimidation. On one hand, money and marketing impact how rosters are made up. Therefore, better talent, players, coaches and facilities can be intimidating to those on the outside.</p>
<p>Yet there are countless other reasons too. They range from the popularity of soccer to the corruption that plagues football associations.</p>

<h3>Hope for the underdogs and outliers</h3>
<p>There is hope for Africa’s sub-Saharan sides.</p>
<p>This era draws comparisons to when the Congo dominated in the 1960s and Cameroon’s success in the 1980s. The current period exemplifies North Africa’s dominance in the CAF Champions League.</p>
<p>Other clubs need to adapt now more than ever. Although North Africa’s dominance looks near insurmountable, there are examples of how to <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/caf-champions-league/story/4001768/how-mamelodi-sundowns-became-the-caf-champions-leagues-trickiest-customer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">take down some of Africa’s mightiest fighters</a>.</p>
<h5>Breaking down the groups</h5>
<p>Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of North African clubs. The CAF Champions League includes defending champions Al Ahly, famed club Raja Casablanca, and more. However, no one expected how dominant North Africa would be in qualifying. Half of the teams in the group stage, eight out of 16, are North African.</p>
<p>Clubs from North Africa do not just reign in quantity but also quality. North African teams form the top-five sides for seeding. Essentially, UNAF clubs held the highest places in CAF’s five-Year Ranking. The best four associations, according to the CAF five-year ranking, are from North Africa. This, yet again, reaffirms North Africa’s dominance.</p>
<p>North Africa’s power is unparalleled, but some teams could lift the trophy in this campaign.</p>
<h5>Preview</h5>
<p>Al Ahly is the favorite to take home the CAF Champions League trophy. Coming off two consecutive Champions League victories, Al Ahly is also a domestic powerhouse. Fellow Egyptian side Zamalek, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Tunisian titleholders Esperance Tunis could also take the title.</p>
<p>Yet numerous sleeper candidates pose problems to the perennial contenders. Sides like AmaZulu from South Africa or Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel will be problematic for the pre-established elite. Horoya AC will also cause trouble in a field full of fascinating sides.</p>
<p>On beIN Sports, many players will show their skills and attract the attention of clubs from other continents. Malian international <a href="https://breakingthelines.com/player-analysis/aliou-dieng-malis-midfield-metronome/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aliou Dieng</a> will be among those players. Dieng, who earned 20 caps for his native Mali, is one of the continent’s best players at club and international level. The defensive midfielder is akin to a brick wall.</p>
<p>Another player to look out for is Namibia’s Peter Shalulile. Shalulile leads Mamelodi Sundowns’ front line in this CAF campaign. Shalulile terrorized the South African Premier League all season and will look to repeat his feats in this campaign.</p>
<h5>Getting things started</h5>
<p>beIN SPORTS holds the rights to broadcast the CAF Champions League in the United States. The tournament kicks off on Friday, Feb. 11, with games running into the weekend.</p>
