<h2>2024 – full season of Messi in America</h2>



<p>Since Messi joined up late in the campaign last year, many cities didn’t get a chance to see the star play in person. But now the tour will be making stops all across the entire league. Of course, Messi may miss a few games as Copa América and Argentina duties will be taking focus in the summer. </p>

This includes Messi’s actual team, who is sticking with their temporary venue instead of moving to a larger nearby stadium. <p>Canada has a growing soccer structure, but many people only know of their biggest teams. But there is more to the soccer scene in Canada than just their three Major League Soccer sides. Here’s where clubs from Canada play.</p>



<h2>Pro Soccer in Canada: Origins</h2>



<p>A couple of names you’ll recognize from today actually date back to well before the existing leagues in Canada. The Vancouver Whitecaps were actually started originally in the 1970s, playing in the North American Soccer League. That league also had teams in Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, and Montréal over the years. However, none of those other teams lasted long nor inspired future team names.</p>



<p>After the NASL collapsed, a new team came to Vancouver in 1986, aptly named the 86ers. Eventually, this team would adopt the Whitecaps name, and later, join Major League Soccer in 2011. </p>



<p>Today’s CF Montréal got their start in 1993 as the Montréal Impact, playing in American lower division leagues until joining MLS in 2012. </p>

<p>Toronto FC was the first Canadian team in MLS, however, starting from scratch as a brand new team in 2007. </p>



<p>Since no true Canadian professional league existed at the time, these clubs all joined American leagues at their start.</p>



<h2>Today’s Canadian league setup</h2>



<p>But that situation has changed. In 2019, the Canadian Premier League debuted, officially recognized as Canada’s division one professional league.</p>



<p>The three <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">MLS</a> teams have been grandfathered into the American system, and allowed to continue playing there by US Soccer and CONCACAF. This is similar to clubs like <a href="https://www.swanseacity.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Swansea City</a> and Wrexham AFC who are based in Wales but play in the neighboring English pyramid.</p>



<p>Both MLS and CanPL sides also participate in the Canadian Championship, the country’s national knockout tournament.</p>

<h2>There’s more than one soccer league in Canada</h2>



<p>At the lower levels, League 1 Canada consists of three provincial semi-pro leagues: League 1 Ontario, League 1 Québec, and League 1 British Columbia. The champions of these three leagues earn a spot in the Canadian Championship. Occasionally Canadian amateur sides will compete in American leagues like USL League Two, but they do not partake in the Canadian Championship.</p>



<p>Previously, teams like the Ottawa Fury, FC Edmonton, Impact, and Whitecaps played in American Division Two pro leagues like USL or NASL, but this is no longer sanctioned by CONCACAF. </p>



<p>The winner of the Canadian Championship, as well as the top two CPL teams, earn a place in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The three MLS teams in Canada can now also qualify for the Champions Cup via MLS league play and Leagues Cup.  </p>



<p>In the Champions Cup, Montréal impressively made the quarterfinals in 2008, when they were still a second-division side.</p>



<p>As of 2023, no professional or nationwide amateur leagues exist for women’s soccer in Canada. However, the League 1 provincial leagues include women’s divisions.</p>



<p>That’s just about everything there is to know about soccer in the great white North. And the game in the country will only continue to get bigger. </p>

<p>The former CONCACAF Champions League will now be known as the CONCACAF Champions Cup for the 2024 edition. It will offer a more polished version of CONCACAF’s premier international club tournament.</p>



<p>In addition to a rebranding, the 2024 tournament will include 27 new competitors hailing from all around Central and North America. Participating teams include <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/how-many-games-will-messi-play-in-2024-for-inter-miami-20231205-WST-475025.html">Lionel Messi</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/inter-miami-schedules-friendly-against-river-plate-in-dallas-20231130-WST-474182.html">Inter Miami</a>, who advanced to the tournament’s Round of 16 as seeds after winning the 2023 Leagues Cup.</p>



<p>While other MLS teams like Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati face first-round opponents, these two clubs join Columbus in advancing to the round of 16. A club from the United States will be aiming to win the continental championship for the second time since 2000.</p>



<p>Only the 2022 Seattle Sounders’ triumph can be considered a modern-era Major League Soccer triumph. Only two Costa Rican clubs—in 2004 and 2005—have ever won; the others are all Mexican.</p>



<h2>CONCACAF Champions Cup draw results</h2>



<p>December 13, 2023, was the date for the 2024 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/concacaf-champions-league-tv-schedule/">Concacaf Champions Cu</a>p draw. It set the stage for the first two rounds of the tournament and the route to continental championships for each club.</p>

<p>The 16-team round will begin in February 2024 with the teams with the best aggregate scores from each match. On the other hand, June 2, 2024, will see the Final contested as a one-leg encounter.</p>



<p>CONCACAF is releasing the full round one schedule in the coming days.</p>



<h2>What has changed for the 2024 edition?</h2>



<p>From February to June of 2024, the Concacaf Champions Cup, the best men’s club tournament in the area, will have its 59th edition. Every year, the top teams from the Americas compete in the event, which has five rounds of elimination and determines who wins the club championship for the Confederation.</p>



<p>Additionally, this competition is the only way for clubs from this area to qualify for the newly enlarged 2025 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/club-world-cup-tv-schedule-streaming-links/">Club World Cup</a>. There is no group stage to begin the event; instead, it returns to its original format of a straight knockout bracket.</p>



<p>In contrast to previous years, which saw 16 teams compete in the knockout round, 27 teams will be entered in 2024. Before the tournament’s first round, five winners from other events will get byes to the round of 16.</p>

2024 Concacaf Champions Cup draw results: Who will play who?

The CONCACAF Champions Cup draw may replace the Champions League in North America and the Caribbean, but it still produces great games.


<p>Lionel Messi is playing his first full season in Major League Soccer with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-miami-tv-schedule/">Inter Miami</a> in 2024. In full, that means Messi will play in MLS, the US Open Cup, the Leagues Cup, and the CONCACAF Champions Cup. That sounds like a dream for broadcasters in the United States who have the rights to Inter Miami’s litany of games. That is especially true for <a href="https://tv.apple.com/channel/tvs.sbd.7000?itsct=wst_mls&amp;itscg=30200&amp;at=1010l35s4&amp;ct=rvo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow">MLS Season Pass</a> from Apple, which saw its subscriptions increase when Messi arrived in the middle of last season.</p>



<p>Likewise, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/inter-miami-sells-out-of-2024-season-tickets-despite-price-hike-20231130-WST-474118.html">season tickets for Inter Miami</a> have already sold out. Despite <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/miami-pays-the-price-for-messi-with-record-breaking-ticket-prices-20230929-WST-459241.html">an uptick in prices</a> for tickets, people want to see Inter Miami with Messi, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and the impending Luis Suarez. If construction stays on schedule, 2024 will see DRV PNK Stadium used in its last full season before the team moves to Miami Freedom Park. Still, the 21,000-seat stadium will expect a heavy dose of Lionel Messi.</p>



<p>Yet, last week, Messi reaffirmed his commitment to play for Argentina as <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/messi-calls-major-league-soccer-a-minor-league-of-the-sport-20231201-WST-474314.html">his main focus</a>. Last season, Messi missed games with Inter Miami to begin Argentina’s 2026 World Cup Qualifying campaign. Also, an injury sustained during those games with Argentina ruled him out for several matches with Inter Miami. Injuries will happen, particularly at Messi’s age. That will impact the number of games he plays with Inter Miami.</p>

<h2>Messi could play in a huge number of Inter Miami games in 2024</h2>



<p>When talking about the number of games Messi could play in the coming season, let’s start with the maximum quantity possible. Inter Miami will enter the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the round of 16 as Leagues Cup champions. That could warrant seven games if the club reaches the Final. Based on the Supporters’ Shield table, Inter Miami will play seven more games if it reaches the Final again. The US Open Cup could yield six games if Inter Miami enters in the Third Round as it did last season. Then, Inter Miami will play 34 games in MLS.</p>



<p>Total that up, and Inter Miami will play <em>at most</em> 54 games in those competitions. If MLS follows the same MLS Cup Playoffs structure as this season, that number could rise to 61 with a Wild Card round and the best-of-three series. However, that format had mixed reviews among MLS fans. </p>

<p>There is a slim chance Messi plays in 61 games with Inter Miami. Not only will it be a major challenge for Inter Miami to have success in every competition. Messi may simply miss games. With PSG last season, Messi missed two games after the World Cup after needing a break.</p>



<p>Activity with Argentina ruled him out of games in September and October. While he <em>could</em> have played in games with Inter Miami just days after contests with Argentina, he needed rest to ensure he was not overexerting himself. </p>



<h2>Realistic expectations for Messi</h2>



<p>With health and Inter Miami’s form, it may be more likely for Messi to play around 45 to 50 of Inter Miami’s games. The MLS season is a grueling one with the addition of the Leagues Cup. There will be times when Inter Miami rests its talisman. The US Open Cup may afford an opportunity against weaker opposition for Inter Miami to not use its best player. </p>



<p>Inter Miami will have a talented squad, and that will lead to success in cup competitions. Yet, with a strong portion of the potential games happening in single-elimination tournaments, one slip-up could decrease the number of games Messi plays with Inter Miami in 2024.</p>

How many games will Messi play in 2024 for Inter Miami?

Lionel Messi is playing his first full season in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami in 2024, and that could mean a large number of games.


<p>The 2023 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leagues-cup-tv-schedule/">Leagues Cup</a> was a new era for the competition. No longer simply a series of glorified friendlies, it is now a full-fledged piece of the CONCACAF club puzzle, offering spots in the newly re-christened Champions Cup for 2024.</p>



<p>But despite some fun moments (and the perfectly-timed arrival of arguably the world’s biggest star), the tournament is frankly a farce from the standpoint of competitive integrity. If one really examines things, the Leagues Cup has no business feeding into <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/concacaf-champions-league-tv-schedule/">CONCACAF Champions Cup</a>. </p>



<h4>Examining the new CONCACAF landscape</h4>



<p>Alongside the expansion of Leagues Cup in 2024, CONCACAF made sweeping changes to the way Champions League will work moving forward. This included changing the name of the competition back to the old Champions Cup moniker. This name does more accurately describe the competition, which is a straight knockout tournament with no group stage.</p>

<p>The competition will include 27 teams, with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/liga-mx-tv-schedule/">Liga MX</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">MLS</a> providing six and five clubs respectively. The Canadian Premier League, Canada’s official first division, will send two clubs. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/us-open-cup-tv-schedule/">U.S. Open Cup</a> and Canadian Championship champions each qualify as well. The remaining twelve teams will qualify via new regional cup competitions.<br><br>Three from the Caribbean Cup, six from the Central American Cup, and three more from Leagues Cup. These tournaments have replaced the short-lived, second-tier CONCACAF League, and each represents one sub-zone of CONCACAF. And this is where Leagues Cup is woefully out of place.</p>



<h4>A competitive imbalance</h4>



<p>First, lets take a look at how the Caribbean Cup and Central American Cup work.</p>



<p>The number of teams in each tournament varies, but the general format is the same.</p>



<p>Teams qualify to these two tournaments through domestic league results. For the Caribbean Cup, there is an extra layer, as two spots come from the especially tiny nations through the Caribbean Shield competition.</p>



<p>The qualified clubs (10 for the Caribbean, 20 for Central America) are split into five-team groups. Group play is a single round-robin of four games, with two at home and two on the road. The top two clubs from each group enter a knockout stage which determines final qualification for Champions Cup.</p>



<p>Leagues Cup, however, does not work this way. Firstly, the competition is not organized by CONCACAF itself, but rather MLS and Liga MX.</p>



<p>Second, no qualification is necessary to enter Leagues Cup. Every Liga MX and MLS team gets in automatically. The sheer amount of teams involved also means that the format doesn’t mimic the other regional competitions. Only two group stage matches were played, and none of the Mexican sides had home games. The entire tournament was played in the US and Canada at MLS venues.</p>



<h5>Garber on the Leagues Cup format</h5>



<p><a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/garber-rejects-calls-mexican-clubs-184539272.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">When pressed on the lack of home games for Liga MX sides</a>, MLS boss Don Garber had this to say: “I don’t think it should compete with the Champions Cup and I think once you start having home and away it starts to look like that. I am not sure if that’s in the best interest of the two leagues and our confederation (CONCACAF).”</p>



<p>Of course, Leagues Cup isn’t supposed to compete with Champions Cup. It feeds into it. It is, by the nature of the tournament acting as a qualifier for CCC, a lower tier competition. But that’s not an excuse for it to not provide a level playing field – home games and travel requirements – for every participant. If anything, the competition being officially sanctioned by CONCACAF demands that a fair set of standards be in place.<br><br>The home-field advantage proved very helpful in the debut of the new format. All three Champions Cup spots – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place – went to MLS sides in 2023.</p>



<p>In addition, due to the current lack of promotion and relegation throughout the entire North American zone, not every club in the region has the opportunity to qualify for Leagues Cup, as those in Central America or the Caribbean do for their regional competitions.</p>



<p>When you look at it, Leagues Cup is in no way equitable to the other two regional feeder competitions for Champions Cup. And by only including Liga MX and MLS clubs – including every team that will eventually secure one of the other eleven direct CCC spots shared between the two leagues – it really has no <em>competitive</em> justification to exist.</p>



<h4>Crafting something better</h4>



<p>If MLS and Liga MX want to continue on with Leagues Cup as a money-making exhibition tour in the USA and Canada, by all means, go for it. Let’s be honest – that’s the real reason it was created in the first place.<br><br>But CONCACAF needs to drop it’s endorsement of Leagues Cup, and create a replacement feeder competition for the North American zone that is more inclusive and mirrors the set up for Central America and the Caribbean.<br><br>Keeping with form, let’s call it the “CONCACAF North American Cup”. We’ll slot it into the place Leagues Cup currently occupies:</p>

<p>Since the North American zone already has fifteen direct qualification spots, we’ll give the North American Cup the same three Champions Cup slots that Leagues Cup currently hands out.</p>



<p>The competition should emulate the format of the other two regional sub-tournaments, with clubs qualifying through domestic competitions. Split into four-team groups, each team would play a single round-robin, with two home and two (<em>real</em>) away games. The top two teams from each group make the knockout round. The two finalists and the third place team make the Champions Cup.</p>



<p>As far as how to divvy-up those spots, here’s what could be a reasonable breakdown:</p>



<h5>Presenting the CONCACAF North American Cup</h5>

<p>The tournament could act like a true “Europa League” style competition for Liga MX, MLS, and CanPL clubs. Instead of <em>all</em> (and only) MLS/Liga MX teams automatically getting in, they would have to qualify via league results. The hypothetical North American Cup would take the next-best teams overall from the three D1 leagues that did not directly qualify for Champions Cup each year.</p>



<p>Due to the massive geographic scale of the three countries, and the aforementioned lack of pro/rel, this point is where qualification can (and <em>should</em>) differ from other continental competitions around the world.</p>



<p>First, let’s add the runners-up of the U.S. Open Cup and Canadian Championship. If Mexico ever brings back Copa MX, the number of their Liga MX spots can be tweaked to accommodate, in both this tournament and the Champions Cup proper.</p>

<p>Two spots each can be given to Liga de Expansión MX and USL Championship. To round out the field, one spot each for the USL League One and NISA winners. </p>



<p>Including division two and three clubs is, again, unusual. But due to the way soccer in North America currently operates, this actually promotes a stronger overall field of clubs in continental play. The USL Championship and Expansión MX are arguably the third- and fourth-strongest leagues top-to-bottom in all of CONCACAF. But since they are locked into the lower tiers, these clubs effectively have no current way to enter CONCACAF competitions. A very slim avenue via the Open Cup exists for American teams, but frankly that’s not adequate.</p>



<p>League-based access to continental tournaments exists almost everywhere on Earth for most clubs. Giving a few direct spots to our lower tiers for a secondary regional cup is the least we could do as an alternative to implementing pro/rel as a path to CONCACAF play.</p>



<h4>Don’t count on it, though</h4>



<p>We all know that money rules the modern game. And the tail most especially wags the dog in North America, with MLS and Liga MX officials shaping much of the landscape of soccer in the region.</p>



<p>It’s doubtful the two leagues would willingly give up the place Leagues Cup has carved out for itself in the CONCACAF setup. And it’s even more unlikely that the confederation would have the backbone to stand up to it’s two biggest leagues.</p>



<p>But even with our imperfect North American pyramid, a better, simpler, and more inclusive solution is possible. </p>
