Mason Greenwood was arrested on Saturday for breaching his bail agreement. The Manchester United attacker was previously arrested early in the year on suspicion of assault, rape, and making threats to kill.
BBC is reporting that the arrest took place at the player’s home in Bowdon, southwest of Manchester, England.
Police statement about Mason Greenwood arrested
Greater Manchester Police have released a statement on the issue stating that they “are aware of an allegation regarding a 21-year-old man breaching his bail conditions and an arrest has been made on Saturday.”
The police also continued to say that “enquiries are ongoing at this time.”
Saturday’s arrest is Greenwood’s third time being in police custody this year. The forward was also previously arrested twice for the severe allegations.
Greenwood was initially arrested in the case on January 31st. In social media posts, an ex-girlfiend of the player made severe allegations of assault, rape, and even threats to kill. The woman even attached damning photos to the posts.
The player, now 21, was previously one of the most highly-rated youngsters in European soccer. Manchester United last agreed a four-year contract extension with the player in early 2021.
Nevertheless, the former England youth international was quickly suspended by the team when the allegations surfaced in January of this year. This expulsion not only included being excluded from games, but Greenwood could not even train at the club’s facility.
The Red Devils fully denounced their player’s actions following his initial arrest. In an announcement, the team said it ”reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind,” a spokesperson claimed. ”As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice.”
American sportswear company Nike cut ties with Greenwood as well. Along with his sponsorship deal, EA Sports also completely removed the player from their FIFA 22 video game.
