David Villa scored the first goal in the history of new Major League Soccer side, New York City FC, during a 2-0 friendly win over the Scottish Premier League club, St. Mirren.
The 33-year-old forward broke the scoreless game in the 27th minute after the opposition made a mess of a clearance, which led to Villa slotting home a left-footed shot that gave NYCFC a lead, and the striker a historic goal.
“So proud to score the first goal in the history of NYCFC,” Villa said via his Twitter account. “Good job from the whole team. Let’s keep working hard!”
The Spain international has been a standout performer while playing for Valencia, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid; and the striker has a Champions League, European Championship and World Cup title on his resume.
Villa was sign by New York City FC in June 2014 and was immediately sent on loan to the Australian A-League side, Melbourne City FC, in order to stay match-fit. He recently returned to NYCFC and was named the MLS club’s captain earlier this month.
Tony Taylor, who previously played for the New England Revolution, added a second half goal for the game’s final scoreline and the match was played at Manchester City’s Football Academy in front of around 2,000 supporters.
Next up for New York City FC is a home game against the Danish side, Brondby, on Sunday. That match can be seen LIVE starting at 7:00am EST on NYCFC.com.
The club opens its inaugural season in MLS on March 8th against Orlando City SC, a match which can be seen on ESPN2.
