Diego Simeone is excited about the future of Atletico Madrid and is happy with the club’s continued commitment to growth.

Earlier this morning, news broke of Simeone’s contract renewal with the Spanish champions. The deal will see the 44-year-old remain with Atletico Madrid until June 2020, and makes him the highest paid member of the squad.

Simeone has been the most wanted managerial property in world football, with the Argentine previously linked with moves to Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

Reports have surfaced saying the manager was offered lucrative deals to take charge of City and PSG next season. However, Simeone has elected to stay with Atletico and continue the project he started in the Spanish capital back in December 2011.

In just over three years with Simeone and his staff in charge, Atletico Madrid have won a Europa League title, the UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey and a La Liga title – while also finishing as Champions League runners-up last season.

Atletico Madrid have steadily managed their debt, begun the process of building a new 70,000-seat stadium and recently sold a 20% stake in the club to the Dalian Wanda Group – a deal which will increase the club’s global brand.

Speaking at his official presentation earlier today, Simeone expressed gratitude to his players, staff and Atletico officials, while reiterating the club has to maintain its work ethic in order to continue succeeding in the future.

“I choose to be here because I am convinced that the club will continue to grow,” Simeone told the media.

“It’s an important moment for the club and for the technical team. We’ve worked hard to secure this stability that we currently have. I have full trust in my staff and they give me the strength to carry on.

“I’d like to thank the club, players, past and present. Without their effort and belief, none of this would ever have been possible.

“Ahead of us we can look forward to a new stadium, there is a great deal of excitement. The club keeps growing. I’ve made a decision to stay where I am and decisions are sometimes difficult to make in life.

“Fortunately I’ve been able to make this decision as I see a club that is moving forward. I see eagerness to grow and people willing to collaborate. We all love Atletico Madrid, and we all want to grow together.”
