Skydance is injecting $8 billion in Paramount in exchange for the Redstone family’s voting shares. That equates to roughly 77% of the family’s voting shares. In doing so, Skydance and Paramount are merging into one, which ends the Redstone family’s involvement in Paramount. This <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/paramount-global-shake-up-means-potential-sale-of-paramount-20231023-WST-464085.html">saga dates back months</a>, with Shari Redstone holding talks to sell Paramount back in November 2023. </p>



<p>With this deal, Skydance earns ownership rights to everything under the Paramount umbrella. That includes CBS, Paramount+ and the host of cable TV channels like MTV, BET and Nickelodeon. For now, this means nothing for how Paramount+ and a service like Pluto TV operate. Skydance does not have a streaming service that it would prioritize over these. Additionally, Paramount+ is one of the most popular services among American users. </p>



<p>However, there remains speculation that Paramount+ is at risk. According to television analyst account <a href="https://x.com/TVGrimReaper/status/1810310129889292709" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TV Grim Reaper</a>, there’s “no chance that Paramount+ survives the new ownership in current form.” That’s based on what Jeff Shell, the incoming President at Paramount Global as part of this takeover, said today.  First, he said that Paramount+ will essentially sell content to all instead of hoarding it on Paramount+.</p>



<p>Second, streaming still plays a dominant role in a world where linear TV continues on a decline. Yet, there is still a future for traditional TV at a time when streaming is everywhere.</p>



<p>“The experience right now is not great,” <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/07/linear-tv-cbs-broadcast-paramount-jeff-shell-bundle-1236003157/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shell said</a> during a call with shareholders on Monday. “For consumers, No. 1, if you have all these streaming services, you want to watch something, you don’t know if you get it. You have to try to remember where it is. For most consumers, who are price-sensitive, it is pretty expensive now to get all these services. It actually ends up being more expensive than an MVPD bundle. So, I don’t think it’s rocket science to suggest that that consumer experience is not sustainable. Eventually, there’s going to have to be some form of bundled solution that’s easy and simple for somebody.”</p>

<p>An official collaboration between the two television giants would be groundbreaking. Both sides already have significant presences by themselves. Top cable channels such as CNN, TNT, TBS and Discovery are currently under the Warner Bros. umbrella. However, the media giant also has HBO, Warner Bros. Studios, and the streaming service Max.</p>



<p>Paramount, on the other hand, owns CBS, as well as several high-profile television networks such as Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and MTV. The conglomerate operates Paramount Pictures and Paramount+ as well.</p>

<p>One of those is to sell Paramount+. Paramount Global may hold out hope that companies like Amazon or Apple can buy Paramount Global entirely. That would bring all the content and offerings that Paramount and its content has to those major tech companies. Laura Martin, an analyst at Needham &amp; Co., which is a finance service company, wrote to clients earlier this month that Paramount Global is in an interesting position where it is too small to win the streaming wars. However, it is small enough to be a potential asset for a bigger company.</p>



<p>“We believe Paramount Global is too small to win the streaming wars, but it is bite-size enough to be acquired by a larger streaming competitor for its deep library of film and TV content, as well as its sports rights and news assets.”</p>



<h2>Paramount+ sale may not make sense for bigger companies</h2>



<p>However, Paramount+ is bleeding cash from Paramount Global. Companies like Amazon or Apple may not want to take that on even with their deeper pockets. Even if Paramount Global and Paramount+ offer one of the better content selections, these types of streaming services may not be the best idea. Warren Buffett told CNBC the streaming world is “not a very good business.”</p>



<p>Paramount+ is not alone in its struggles to generate any kind of substantial revenue. Peacock, which belongs to NBC, recorded <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/peacock-wont-stop-expanding-sports-coverage-despite-losses-20230729-WST-446422.html">an increase in deficit</a> earlier this year. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/save-10-on-an-espn-subscription-before-the-price-goes-up-20230927-WST-458886.html">ESPN+ bumped up its price again</a> this year to minimize losses in a diluted streaming world.</p>



<p>Therefore, if Paramount+ cannot find a full sale, a merger may make more sense. Paramount Global was formed after a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/paramount-plus-ambitious-plans-for-soccer-include-more-acquisitions-20210406-CMS-330320.html">merger between CBS and Viacom</a> in 2019. Linking up with Warner Bros. Discovery could be a sensible switch. Of course, US regulators may find issues with that merger, according to CNBC.</p>



<p>Regardless, there is potential for change at Paramount Global. Paramount+ could be up for sale or a drastic move as a result.</p>

Paramount Global shake-up means potential sale of Paramount+

There is a growing chance that Paramount+ may be put up for sale. The company's majority shareholder has been holding private talks.


<p>Over the last quarter, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/channels/paramount-plus-soccer-schedule/">Paramount+</a> and Apple TV+ are among the streaming platforms to increase their presence in the grans streaming world. The two companies increased their market share for all streaming platforms in the United States. However, the two are still well behind other platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Max, which was formerly HBO Max.</p>



<p>According to <em><a href="https://www.justwatch.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Just Watch</a></em>, Paramount+ and Apple TV+ both increased their market share by 1%. While not a sizeable growth at first glance, the trend continues to be in a positive direction. Paramount+ and Apple TV+ rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in the market share for streaming platforms. However, the two gained some ground on Max, Disney+ and Hulu. Max and Hulu retained their same market share, while Disney+ lost some of its share. </p>



<p>Overall, the streaming market has been <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/apple-tv-sees-no-growth-in-q1-subscriber-numbers-20230414-WST-428504.html">fairly stagnant in its general growth</a>. Platforms are finding new ways to increase their market shares. For example, Netflix, which cracked down on password sharing, increased its price. As a result, its share grew by 1% in the last quarter, just like Paramount+ and Apple TV+. </p>



<p>Apple TV+ has focused on original content, including the recent <em><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tv/messi-meets-america-review-a-fine-highlight-reel-with-little-depth-20231012-WST-461642.html">Messi Meets America</a></em> documentary. However, Paramount+ jumped Apple TV+ in terms of market share <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2023/10/11/heres-how-apple-tv-growth-compares-to-other-streaming-platforms-in-the-us/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this year</a>. </p>

<h2>How Apple TV+ and Paramount+ stack up in the market share of streaming</h2>



<p>Regardless, both remain considerably below their rivals in the market for streaming services. Based on trends in 2023, those two will keep closing on other services. Apple and Paramount+ must find a way to set themselves apart. With a <a href="https://www.apple.com/tv-pr/news/2023/06/apple-tv-scores-with-documentary-series-featuring-legendary-football-champion-lionel-messi-and-his-fifa-world-cup-career-culminating-in-his-dramatic-qatar-2022-win/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">second Lionel Messi documentary</a> on the horizon, Apple may see the Messi frenzy as a way to keep viewers coming to the service.</p>



<p>Here is the current gap in market share that CBS and Apple’s platforms are looking to overcome.</p>

Paramount+ and Apple TV+ increase market share

Over the last quarter Paramount+ and Apple TV+ are among the streaming platforms to increase their presence in the grans streaming world.


<p>January 2023 brings a number of exciting fixtures to <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/channels/paramount-plus-soccer-schedule/">Paramount+</a>. Even though the Champions League does not return until February, the return to steady club action is enough to whet the appetites of soccer fans.</p>



<p>For example, the Scottish Premiership already had one of its biggest games of the season. Old Firm saw a testy 2-2 draw between Rangers and Celtic. Then, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> kicked off its post-World-Cup restart with all 20 teams involved on Jan. 4.</p>



<p>Even though those major games are in the past, there is plenty to look forward to as 2023 begins. </p>

<h5>Tuesday, Jan. 10 – Inter Milan vs. Parma (Coppa Italia)</h5>



<p>Last season’s <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/coppa-italia-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">Coppa Italia</a> champions, Inter Milan, rejoin the competition in the round of 16. There, it takes on a side that spent many years in the top flight before suffering a major collapse. Parma is still rebuilding to get back to the highs of Serie A soccer, and a game at the San Siro has potential to be a great statement.</p>



<h5>Thursday, Jan. 12 – NWSL College Draft</h5>



<p>The <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nwsl-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">National Women’s Soccer League</a> has a serious case to be the best women’s club league in the world. While not necessarily part of the games schedule, Paramount+ is broadcasting the entry draft for the National Women’s Soccer League in January. Croix Bethune and Isabella D’Aquila are two names expected to go early on.</p>



<h5>Friday, Jan. 13 – Juventus vs. Napoli (Serie A)</h5>



<p>Napoli’s first game back in Serie A came against Inter Milan. Entering that game, Napoli was the only unbeaten team in league play left in Europe. That created something of a cushion at the top of the table. However, that lead is under the microscope as Luciano Spalletti returns to action. Juventus travel to the Deigo Armando Maradona stadium for what likely comes as a top-four clash.</p>



<h5>Wednesday, Jan. 18 – Inter vs. Milan (Supercoppa Italiana)</h5>



<p>Any Derby della Madonnia is worthy of viewership. Add in the fact that this game is for the first trophy of the Italian season, and there is added benefit. Inter and Milan are on a resurgence over the last several seasons, winning the last two Scudettos and the previous Coppa Italia, hence why Inter qualified for this game.</p>



<h5>Tuesday, Jan. 24 – Lazio vs. Milan (Serie A)</h5>



<p>Serie A is a remarkably close league, and this game shows it. Even though these two clubs are separated by just six points, one is in second and the other is in fifth. A win by one and a loss by the other has massive ramifications on the eventual table. That makes this game between Lazio and defending Scudetto winners Milan so pivotal.</p>

<h2>EFL History</h2>



<p>The English Football League dates back to 1888, making it the oldest league competition in the world.</p>



<p>After the game began to allow professionalism (paying players) in 1885, the first Football League season was played in 1888-89. By 1892, the Second Division was formed by absorbing the 12 teams from the rival Football Alliance. </p>



<p>In 1898, automatic promotion and relegation between the First and Second Divisions was added. This succeeded a system of test matches and/or election of clubs that was used prior.</p>



<p>After World War I, the Third Division started. Initially, this was individual north and south leagues. 1958 saw the expansion of the official Football League setup again. A single, nationwide third tier came to be and a Fourth Division joined the fray. For decades after that, 92 total clubs made up the Football League. </p>



<p>But in the early 1990s, a major shakeup occurred that would change the face of club football forever. The 22 First Division clubs resigned from the Football League, in 1992, creating the Premier League. Promotion and relegation remained the same between the top division and the second (re-named the Football League First Division). In 1995 the EPL contracted to 20 clubs, relegating an extra two teams that season.</p>



<p>Since then, the EFL has consisted of 72 clubs. As of 2024, 68 of these clubs are in England, and the other four are in Wales.</p>



<p>In 2004, the remaining three divisions of the EFL again rebranded, this time to what we know today – the EFL Championship (2), League One (3), and League Two (4).</p>



<p>The bottom two teams of League Two at the end of each season drop to the National League (division five). Wrexham AFC is one of the notable clubs that have recently won promotion back to the EFL.</p>
