<p>Soccer theme songs are a familiar pool for Colombian pop sensation Shakira. She was the official voice for the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/world-cup-tv-schedule/">World Cup</a> in South Africa in 2010 and Germany in 2006.</p>



<p>This 47-year-old vocalist is well-known as a prominent figure in the world of soccer themes. Firstly, she sang “Hips Don’t Lie” as the last song of the 2006 World Cup in Berlin. Then, four years later, the 2010 World Cup used the song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” as its official anthem.</p>



<p>Then, “La La La (Brazil 2014)” became the official World Cup song of Brazil 2014. Now, a whole decade later, we’re counting the days before the start of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">2024 Copa Americ</a>a.</p>



<h2>What did Shakira say about Copa America song?</h2>



<p>To commemorate this year’s edition of the oldest-running international tournament, she adapted a recent song called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHnDwYgGKkY&amp;ab_channel=shakiraVEVO" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">“Punteria”</a>. It is a duet with Cardi B and appears on her latest album “Las mujeres ya no lloran”.</p>



<p>The Colombian actress made the revelation live during Tuesday’s Upfronts on the network in New York. “It’s the most important soccer event of the year because we know this song is going to be the sound of the summer for fans around the world,” Shakira told EFE. “It’s the power of our culture and our music.”</p>



<p>Eighteen teams from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL will compete in the tournament. It takes place in the US from June 20 to July 14. The championship is up for grabs, and various giants will be competing.</p>



<p>South American powerhouses including Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Uruguay are among the ten national teams competing. Through CONCACAF, the U.S. and Mexican national teams also secured a spot in the tournament. The Argentines triumphed in the previous edition of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-team-previews/">Copa America</a> in 2011.</p>



<h2>Is it the official Copa theme song?</h2>



<p>Despite claims to the contrary by several news organizations, this song will not serve as the Copa America theme song. It is really from TelevisaUnivision’s broadcast, according to a <a href="https://twitter.com/ShakiraMedia/status/1790475179627258235" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spokesman for Sony Music</a>, Shakira’s record label.</p>



<p>The official tournament broadcaster’s picture and theme music came first, followed by the song itself. This was followed by the publication of a video showcasing the Colombian singer’s vocals. They didn’t make a formal presentation or provide any further information.</p>



<p>As the first single from the artist’s most recent album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, “Punteria” was released on March 22. The energetic electro-pop song peaked at number three on Hot Latin Songs. It also reached number seven on Latin Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay, among other Billboard charts. In addition, the single debuted at number seventy-two on the Billboard Hot 100.</p>



<p>It seems quite logical to use “Punteria” as the theme song for the 2024 Copa America, especially with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/shakira-football-stars-to-dance-at-messis-wedding-20170630-CMS-215542.html">Shakira</a> and Cardi B singing about having excellent aim. Everything in soccer is the aim—from passes and shots to saves and facing the goal—so accuracy is key.</p>



<p>For this reason, Shakira is back to using her talents for the benefit of the world’s most-watched sport. If Cupid were to shoot arrows at their hearts instead of the soccer teams, their disco-pop smash hit would serve as inspiration.</p>

2024 Copa America to include Shakira song: Is it official anthem?

<p>Brazil national team manager Dorival Junior has officially unveiled his full squad for the upcoming <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">2024 Copa America</a>. The tournament is set to start on June 20th here in the United States. Although typically reserved for South American nations, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/usmnt-tv-schedule/">United States men’s national team</a> will take part in the competition as tournament hosts.</p>



<p>Seleção will enter the contest as one of the two favorites to lift the trophy come July. Along with Brazil, reigning World Cup winners <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina</a> are also expected to advance deep into the competition. The two teams share an intense rivalry. Dorival’s side is set to begin their tournament run with Group D matchups against Costa Rica, Paraguay, and Colombia. </p>



<h2>Brazil has a talented overall squad from front to back</h2>



<p>Most of the coach’s selections were fairly straightforward. Skillfull goalkeeping duo Alisson and Ederson were both unsurprisingly named in the 23-man squad on Friday. The duo is among the top shot-stoppers in the entire world. Along with the outstanding keepers, Brazil has a lengthy list of quality defenders to help their keep goals out of the back of the net. This includes Real Madrid’s Eder Militao and Arsenal center-back Gabriel Magalhaes.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, Brazil is historically more known for its offensive flare than their defensive work. Dorival’s latest squad is certainly no exception to this notion. The manager picked five midfielders, all hailing from current <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> clubs. Bruno Guimaraes, Douglas Luiz, and Lucas Paqueta highlight the dynamic quintet in the middle of the pitch.</p>



<p>Going forward, Dorival selected some serious firepower up front heading into the tournament. While Neymar is set to miss out on the competition due to a serious knee injury, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/la-liga-tv-schedule/">LaLiga</a> trio Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and Raphinha will take charge of the potent Brazil attack. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli and 17-year-old teen sensation Endrick are also set to give Dorival options going forward.</p>

<h2>Several Premier League stars left off of the latest Brazil team</h2>



<p>Although most of the squad was predictable, Dorival did make some notable omissions to his team. Brazil veterans Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus, and Richarlison were all left off of the team’s Copa America squad. The trio have all earned at least 48 total caps for their country through the years.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> midfielder has unfortunately experienced a massive drop in form during the current campaign. Despite leaving him off of his squad, the coach maintained that Casemiro may return to the team in the future.</p>



<p>“Casemiro deserves respect from all of us,” <a href="https://theathletic.com/5484796/2024/05/10/brazil-squad-copa-america-casemiro-jesus-silva-richarlison/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">claimed</a> Dorival. “Three months ago, I told him what I expected of him. He knows very well what I think of him. I will contact him tomorrow and explain what the future may hold. He’s a player who deserves consideration and we continue to see him as a player at this level.”</p>



<p>Dorival did not particularly address leaving off Jesus, but he did reveal that Richarlison was not selected due to injury. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Tottenham Hotspur</a> striker most recently came off of the bench and netted a goal against Liverpool last weekend. Spurs are set to face <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/burnley-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Burnley</a> on Saturday, as they hope to grab the final <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> spot.</p>

<p>This summer, the Copa America returns with fans across the globe tuning in on TV and streaming. The traditional South American tournament is <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/2024-copa-america-canada-face-messi-costa-rica-in-group-d/">expanding to new lengths</a> this summer with 16 teams. The competition usually has just 12 teams. However, the new expansion is affording more games on TV.</p>



<p>For those in the United States, FOX is picking up <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-america-tv-schedule/">coverage of the Copa America</a> for the second tournament in a row. The American broadcaster took over the rights before the 2021 competition that Argentina won. Now, it hosts the biggest Copa America in history, at least based on the number of teams and games. World Soccer Talk filmed a video that shows how to watch the games and which channels have the most games. </p>

Several players may decide to do the same, and Messi could also be one of them.</p>



<p>Just four days before his nation begins the 16-team tournament, Lionel Messi celebrates his 37th birthday. Therefore, this might very well be his last opportunity to play in the Copa America. In 2024, he may potentially decide to retire from national team competition as well.</p>



<h5>Santiago Gimenez</h5>



<p>The young Mexican has blossomed into one of El Tri’s most valuable assets. Especially, in the year and a half after being left off Mexico’s 2022 World Cup roster. Despite feeling left out, Gimenez helped Feyenoord win the Dutch crown for the second time this century, scoring 15 goals.</p>



<p>Last season, he scored 31 goals in all competitions for the Eredivisie, surpassing the previous record set in 2009 by the legendary Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez. Furthermore, Gimenez scored the game-winning goal for Mexico in the Gold Cup last year.</p>

<p>Going forward, Real Madrid star <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/vinicius-jr-moved-to-tears-discussing-racism-in-spain/">Vinicius</a> will have the responsibility of leading the squad to victory without Neymar, particularly with the Copa America coming up in the summer. With 28 appearances for Brazil, Vinicius has found the back of the net three times. He did send a strong message of purpose with a good showing against Spain, especially at the Bernabeu.</p>

<p>Brazilian hopeful Endrick will also be the center of attention. At the tender age of seventeen, he is rapidly becoming a household name in his own country. His thrilling play for Palmeiras and, of course, his impending transfer to Real Madrid after the competition are the main reasons for this.</p>



<p>The hype mill has been in full swing since that agreement was finalized more than a year ago. While he will likely open the Copa America as an impact substitute, his chances of earning a starting spot are still high.</p>

<p>Copa América is the championship for South American national teams. Now held every four years, it pits the ten CONMEBOL nations against each other, usually with a few guest teams invited to participate.</p>



<p>The tournament is the second-most prestigious honor for South American teams, after winning the World Cup. It is equivalent to Europe’s UEFA Euro competition, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, and other continental championships.</p>



<h2>Copa America beginner’s guide</h2>



<h3>Format</h3>



<p>The present competition format is fairly straightforward. Teams are broken into groups for the initial round-robin phase, and then an eight-team single-elimination knockout bracket commences.</p>



<p>Depending on the number of teams in the competition, the group stage can vary. For example, as no guest teams participated in the 2021 Copa America, there were two five-team groups. Each team therefore played four group games, and the top four from each group made it to the knockout stage.</p>



<p>However, for 2026, there are sixteen teams, so a more manageable four-groups-of-four setup will be used. The top two teams in each group will advance, after playing three games, similar to the World Cup format.</p>



<p>While group games can end in a tie, awarding one point (teams get three points for a win), knockout stage matches need a winner.</p>



<p>In the final, if the match is tied after 90 minutes, two additional 15-minute halves will be played in their entirety. Should the game remain tied, a penalty shootout will take place. For all other knockout games, extra time will not be played and tied games will go directly to penalty kicks.</p>



<p>The PK shootout consists of five rounds with the team scoring the most goals declared the winner. Should the shootout be tied after five rounds, sudden death will begin, one round at a time, until a winner emerges.</p>



<h3>History</h3>



<p>Copa America started way back in 1916, which makes it the oldest still-running soccer competition of its kind in the world. Argentina hosted the first-ever tournament but finished as runners-up to Uruguay. This would be the start of the two nations’ battle as top sides in the tournament.</p>



<p>For many years, a simple round-robin format was used, but now the more common group stage plus knockout rounds are utilized.</p>



<p>In 1975, the current name of “Copa América” was used for the first time. Previously, the competition was called the South American Championship. </p>



<p>Every Copa América except two has been hosted in South America. In 2016, a special “Cenentario” edition was staged in the United States to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the competition. In 2024. the tournament returns to the USA, but this time as part of the normal rotation. </p>



<h3>Notable achievements</h3>



<p>Argentina and Uruguay each have 15 titles, the most overall. Brazil has nine to its name. Paraguay, Chile, and Peru (2 each), as well as Bolivia and Colombia (1 each) have also won the championship. Ecuador and Venezuela are the only two CONMEBOL sides to date that have not won the competition, nor have they appeared in a final.</p>



<p>Mexico, however, has finished in second place twice, in two of their many guest appearances. This is the best performance ever of any guest team, and the only time a guest team has made it to the final.</p>
