Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi won a record fifth FIFA Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best player at a ceremony in Zurich on Monday.
He dethroned three-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo in adding to his four consecutive awards from 2009 to 2012. Messi’s Barcelona teammate, Neymar, was the third finalist for the award.
The honor comes after a season in which Barcelona completed their second treble during Messi’s time with the club, winning the La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League. Barcelona added another major honor last month by winning the Club World Cup in Japan.
Despite battling injuries during the latter part of 2015, Messi finished the calendar year with 48 goals and 24 assists in 56 all-competition appearances.
