Real Madrid left-back Marcelo has been ruled out of the Copa America and will be replaced by SC Internactional defender Geferson, according to Brazil coach Dunga.

The national team’s doctor was informed by Real Madrid that Marcelo had been carrying an injury, and after an examination Brazilian officials ruled the left-back out of the summer tournament.

“We were told by Real Madrid doctors that in a training session he went to jump and since then he’s been suffering severe pain in the lumbar region,” Rodrigo Lasmar, Brazil’s national team doctor said.

“We did some tests and he won’t be able to start to train with us on Monday. He’d need around three weeks, more or less, to be able to train.

“Today he has real problems, he can’t walk. There’s no other solution.”

Brazil are scheduled to play their first match of the Copa America on June 14 against Peru in Group C, which also contains Columbia and Venezuela.
