The Premier League issued Nottingham Forest a points deduction on Monday that immediately sends the club into the relegation zone. The four-point slash comes as a result of Forest breaching the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) that protect financial fair play (FFP). <a href="https://www.premierleague.com/news/3936397" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Premier League authorities</a> noted that Forest’s losses came from exuberant spending upon the club’s return to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a>. Now, the club is under the threat of failing to retain its status in the English top flight. 



Per Premier League regulations, a club’s total losses cannot exceed $133 million over three years. However, Nottingham’s Forest loss limit was $77 million because it spent two of the three seasons in the Championship. Since earning promotion to the Premier League after the 2021/22 season, Forest spent over $318 million on player transfers.



However, the club’s top defense against the PSR breaches related to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/epl-clubs-believe-forest-will-soon-be-given-points-deduction-20240220-WST-490682.html">sale of Brennan Johnson</a>. The Forest academy product moved to Tottenham Hotspur for a massive deal worth over $60 million. However, the fiscal year for Premier League clubs runs from the beginning of July to the end of June. Therefore, the revenue brought in from the Johnson sale did not offset any losses from previous player acquisitions as the sale to Tottenham happened in September. The Premier League stated Forest had losses that were $44 million above the PSR threshold. Johnson’s sale to Spurs would have covered those losses. 



Consequently, Forest now faces a points deduction similar to that of Everton from earlier in the season. Still, the Toffees dropped six points after an original 10-point penalty.

Forest did use the fact that its promotion hampered its spending as <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/nottingham-forest-appeal-to-ffp-charges-to-start-in-early-march-20240226-WST-491737.html">part of its defense</a> against the Premier League’s sanctions. It is possible that affected the severity of the punishment.



<h2>Threat of relegation looms as Nottingham Forest suffers points deduction</h2>



As stated, striking four points from Nottingham Forest’s record this season has grave consequences on the table. Forest now falls to 18th in the league table, which would mean relegation. The biggest beneficiary of the points deduction is Luton Town, which now rises to 17th in the league table. Ironically, these two clubs met in the Premier League on Saturday. Their 1-1 draw kept the table level, as Forest had a three-point lead over Luton at the time. Now, Luton has the slightest lead in the league table. 



There are still nine games remaining for both Luton and Forest, which can dramatically shake up their one-point gap as things stand. Yet, other drama could transpire off the pitch.



Everton is still the subject of an additional charge from the Premier League that could add to the points penalties the Toffees are dealing with. Currently, Everton is 16th in the Premier League table. It is three points above Luton Town and four above Forest following the latter’s drop. If Everton gets the same penalty as Nottingham Forest of four points, Forest would still be in the relegation zone based on goal differential. Yet, Everton’s precedent of suffering a six-point penalty would plunge the Toffees into the relation zone. 



Much like Forest, Everton’s official penalty will come before this season’s end.

This weekend’s quarterfinals of the FA Cup provided high-intensity clashes that demanded stoppage-time and extra-time goals to set up a fascinating semifinal draw. The other three games in the quarterfinals were far more exciting. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> overcame more self-inflicted blunders to defeat Leicester City at Stamford Bridge. Despite holding a two-goal lead at halftime, Chelsea allowed the Foxes to waltz back into the game. An Axel Disasi own goal opened Leicester’s account on Sunday. Then, 10 minutes later, Stephy Mavididi pulled Leicester level with a <a href="https://twitter.com/EmiratesFACup/status/1769366578577940918" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sensational solo effort</a>. 



However, Chelsea capitalized on Leicester defender Callum Doyle picking up a red card in the 73rd minute. Doyle brought down Nicolas Jackson on the edge of the area, but the spot of the foul did not warrant a penalty. Instead, Raheem Sterling blasted a ball into the crowd in a notoriously poor free kick.



Fortunately for Chelsea supporters, Carney Chukwuemeka provided the game-winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time. A well-worked give-and-go with Cole Palmer allowed Chukwuemeka to slot the ball home. Noni Madueke provided the insurance with the last kick of the game with another impressive goal.

The other two quarterfinals will go down as two of the best FA Cup games in recent memory. On Sunday, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> hosted <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> in the latest derby. Scott McTominay opened the scoring to give United a precious lead. Yet, Liverpool responded with two goals before halftime to take a lead into the interval. Alexis Mac Allister tied the game before Mohamed Salah scored his 13th goal in 14 appearances against Manchester United. 



United would not pull level until the 87th minute when Antony scored just his second goal of the season. Even more bizarrely, it came with his right foot on the turn. The game entered extra time, when Harvey Elliott scored to re-establish Liverpool’s lead. However, goals from Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo stunned Liverpool to give United the win and a place in the FA Cup semifinals. Rashford’s goal came in the 112th minute. Then, Diallo scored on a counterattack with Alejandro Garnacho. It was Diallo’s first goal for Manchester United this season.



In Saturday’s FA Cup quarterfinal between Coventry and Wolves, similar drama transpired at Molineux. A scoreless first half preceded a five-goal second half. Coventry’s Ellis Simms scored in the 53rd minute to give the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/championship-tv-schedule/">Championship</a> side a precious lead. Then, in the 83rd minute, Rayan Air-Nouri leveled the contest. Just five minutes later, Hugo Bueno had Wolves in front and destined for the semifinals for the first time since 2019.



In the 97th minute, Simms scored once again to bring the tie level. Finally, in the 10th minute of stoppage time, USMNT forward Haji Wright scored to assuredly win the contest for the Championship team.

The remarks are certainly odd for a player still under contract with the club. Brentford brass most likely will not be thrilled that their star is openly hoping to leave the team and even named an ideal destination. The comments could even potentially impact the final transfer fee that Brentford may receive for selling their star striker.



Toney’s decision to discuss his future may also be seen as unattractive to new suitors. There has already been <a href="https://twitter.com/Teamnewsandtix/status/1766553700179345718" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rumors</a> that Arsenal will not pursue Toney this summer mostly because of his immaturity. This is despite the fact that the forward netted 20 Premier League goals last season.



Nevertheless, despite the comments, Brentford’s boss selected Toney as his captain for the Burnley fixture. The team’s typical leader, Christian Norgaard, missed the match due to a minor muscle injury. Toney failed to score in the game and was booked for a clash late in the game with the opposing goalkeeper.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has proclaimed that his perfect summer includes a permanent transfer to Real Madrid

Liverpool is reportedly interested in bringing <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bayern-munich-tv-schedule/">Bayern Munich</a> star Jamal Musiala to the club this summer. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is widely considered one of the top youngsters at his position in all of Europe. After all, the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/germany-national-team-tv-schedule/">Germany</a> international has been a mainstay in the Bundesliga side essentially ever since he was 18.



Bayern, quite understandably, do not want to let one of their star players depart the club this summer. However, Musiala has apparently rejected recent offers to extend his stay in Bavaria. The midfielder’s current contract is set to expire in June of 2026. Despite being a top performer in the team, the playmaker’s salary is no where near the top of the team’s wage list.



Although Musiala <a href="https://www.capology.com/club/bayern-munich/salaries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reportedly</a> earns about $5.4 million per season, 17 other Bayern players currently make more money. In fact, the German star supposedly earns the same amount of weekly wages as new signing Eric Dier. As a result, Musiala will almost certainly be looking for a significant raise in the coming months.



<h2>Liverpool looking to make summer splash as club set for major changes</h2>



If this salary increase does not occur, several top teams from around Europe will likely come calling. One of these clubs could just be <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a>. According to <a href="https://www.footballinsider247.com/liverpool-now-very-keen-to-complete-huge-jamal-musiala-deal-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Football Insider</a>, the Reds would love to make Musiala their marquee signing of the summer. Bayern, however, would apparently not be willing to part ways with the youngster for anything less than $127 million.

The fee would obviously be a steep price to pay, but it would be in line with the current transfer market. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> recently paid a comparable fee to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/west-ham-tv-schedule/">West Ham</a> in order to sign dynamic midfielder Declan Rice. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> international has been one of the top performers in the entire <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> so far this season. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> also spent similar money on <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/brighton-tv-schedule-where-to-watch-the-seagulls/">Brighton</a>‘s Moises Caicedo. Although it is still early, this particular move has yet to pay off.



Liverpool may, however, have to fend off interest in Musiala from rivals <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a>. The reigning European champions want a potential chance to sign the young German. Nevertheless, the Reds will need to make some major decisions this summer as the club looks set for a refresh.



Manager Jurgen Klopp is departing Liverpool at the end of the current campaign. Superstar winger Mohamed Salah could also follow his manager out of the door as well. Saudi Pro League sides are expected to make the Egyptian goalscorer their top target this summer.



<h2>Chelsea could reportedly make $25 million in deal</h2>



Potentially signing Musiala would seemingly soften the blow of losing some key figures at the club. The midfielder has 10 goals and six assists in all competitions so far this season. Musiala racked up 32 total goals and assists throughout the previous campaign as well.



One particularly interesting aspect of Bayern possibly selling Musiala is Chelsea’s involvement in the move. <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13192441/Chelsea-windfall-Bayern-Munich-Jamal-Musiala-Blues-Liverpool-Manchester-City.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mail Sport</a> recently claimed that the Blues included a 20% sell-on fee when they allowed the midfielder to join Bayern’s academy in 2019. Assuming that the German giants do, in fact, sell Musiala for $127 million, Chelsea would earn about $25 million in the deal.

Liverpool hope to sign Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala this summer, with the cost likely upwards of $127 million

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has defended his club’s decision to increase season ticket prices in the coming months. Spurs <a href="https://thstofficial.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/tottenham-hotspur-season-ticket-increase.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recently revealed</a> that they were rising season tickets for the 2024/25 campaign by 6%. The most affordable adult season ticket is currently about $1,027. However, the same seat will soon cost fans $1,089.



Along with price hikes on tickets, the north London side also announced that they will be removing certain concessions at their stadium. The concession in question happens to be for new senior season ticket holders aged 65 and older. The move will take place from the start of the 2025/26 season.



The news has, quite predictably, not gone down well with a large portion of the club’s fanbase. In fact, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68499071" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">labeled</a> the decisions as “unacceptable” and “hugely disappointing.”



<h2>Postecoglou dismisses notion that club is targeting foreign fans</h2>



Select fans and pundits believe that the moves by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Spurs</a> ultimately come down to the club targeting foreign fans. In fact, some claim that loyal but less wealthy fans will now be priced out of a season ticket. These seats, in turn, would then be purchased by tourists or “plastic” fans.



Postecoglou, however, believes that this notion is particularly cruel. “See that’s really harsh,” the coach <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-postecoglou-ticket-price-increase-b1145734.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proclaimed</a> when asked if Spurs were specifically targeting foreign fans.



“I’ll tell you why: Because I’m probably ‘plastic’ and ‘tourist’ because I was coming from the other side of the world really passionate about football and if I could get access to see a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> game, that was the world to me.”



“This football club has supporters all over the world, has supporters all over the UK that don’t always get access to the games of people who live here.”

The Greek/Australian manager was then directly asked exactly what kind of fans he wants in the stands for Spurs games. “I want Spurs supporters in the stand, mate – I don’t just want anybody in there,” continued Postecoglou. “I want people who are passionate about the football club, I want the stadium to reflect the attachment that they have.”



“Supporters have a voice and they are allowed to use that to express how they feel. They can use that in the stadium or through other avenues. I’m never going to dictate how they should behave or what they should adhere to.”



<h2>Spurs season ticket prices increase despite matchday revenue on the rise</h2>



The decision to raise season ticket prices is unfortunately not exactly a surprising move by Spurs. Clubs, particularly the top teams, quite regularly increase costs for match-going fans. The Premier League side tried to justify the move by claiming that they have only raised season ticket prices once in the last five years. Spurs also pointed to a “significant increase in matchday costs” as well.



Nevertheless, fans will undoubtedly look to a recently revealed revenue report by the club. <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/251169/revenue-of-tottenham-hotspur-by-stream/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Data shows</a> that Spurs has actually increased their matchday revenue each season since moving into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This, however, obviously does not count the 2020/21 campaign affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
