
<p>Unsurprisingly, both the United States and Panama meet in the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal on Wednesday evening. It’s not surprising because between 2005 and 2019, USA has played Panama a total of nine times at all eight Gold Cups.  Two of those games were in the final which the US both won (2005 and 2013).  Looking ahead to the USA vs Panama preview, the next chapter between these two turns to San Diego, California.</p>



<h2>US survives against Canada</h2>



<p>To make it to the semifinal, the US had to endure a heavy slog against Canada that went all the way to penalty kicks after extra time. Just after the game started, things got weird when the <a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/referee-brutally-hit-ball-face-30429891" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">assistant referee got hit in the face</a> with a ball from point-blank range, breaking his nose.</p>



<p>The first half that followed was mostly dull save for the whopping 10 minutes of added time, mostly due to the injury to the assistant referee.</p>



<p>The second half wasn’t much better save for a few decent saves from Canadian goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.  The last ten minutes of the game is when both teams finally decided to start playing, and the US duly took the lead in the 87th minute through Brandon Vazquez.  </p>

<p>Just moments later though, Canada was able to equalize on a penalty kick, conceded after Miles Robinson handled the ball in the penalty area (the second time in the game he had done so).  </p>



<p>In extra time, Canada thought they had it won after Nashville SC’s Jacob Shaffelburg put them in front just ten minute from time.  But Matt Turner played in a great ball to the box and after several deflections, the ball found its way past St. Clair into the back of the net for a 2-2 scoreline.  </p>



<p>Penalties got off to a bizarre start as Matt Turner was not happy with the coin toss procedure. And then each set of players decided that standing at midfield for the taking of kicks somehow did not apply to them.  But in the end, Turner came up big for the US, saving the first two Canada penalties and forcing a miss on the fifth one.</p>



<h2>USA vs Panama preview: Panama’s path to the semifinal</h2>



<p>Panama made it to the semifinal in relatively easy fashion.  They finished top of Group C with seven points.  They opened with a 2-1 win over Costa Rica.  That win was followed by a 2-1 win over Martinique. Panama closed the Group Stage with a 2-2 draw against El Salvador.  </p>



<p>In the quarter-final, they made short work of a Qatar team playing in their second consecutive Gold Cup.  Ismael Diaz notched a second half hat trick helping Los Canaleros to a 4-0 win over the 2022 World Cup hosts.  </p>



<p>Panama coach Thomas Christiansen has had an interesting managerial career.  He has had two stops at clubs in Cyprus as well as a 35-game stint at Leeds United. Prior to taking the Panama job, he managed Union SG in Belgium.  </p>



<p>The Panama roster called in by Christiansen is one of the most experienced at this Gold Cup.  Seven of the players have over 50 caps, with Alberto Quintero topping out at 129 international appearances.  </p>

<p>Wednesday’s game against Panama is set for a 7:30pm ET kickoff from Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.  The game will air on FS1 in English and on Univision and TUDN in Spanish. Argentina is playing in two friendlies this March to celebrate the World Cup triumph, and both games are only available on Fanatiz.

<p>Orlando (World Soccer Talk) —&nbsp;The U.S. and a dominant offense looked revamped on Sunday night following Thursday night’s drab draw against its biggest rival, Mexico.</p>
<p>In Mexico City, the U.S. failed to convert several chances in front of goal at the Estadio Azteca. Now, the World Cup party is in full swing following a demolition of Panama in Orlando, 5-1.</p>
<p>Theoretically, the United States could still miss out on Qatar 2022. However, that would require a collapse even more dramatic than what happened back in 2017. As the table stands after 13 games, the United States sits in second place with 25 points. Mexico sits in third, also on 25. Meanwhile, Costa Rica’s win over El Salvador puts the Ticos on 22 points.</p>
<p>Crucially, the U.S. holds a goal difference of 13, 10 goals more than Costa Rica.</p>
<p>Simply put, the U.S. has one foot in the group stages in Qatar. On Wednesday night in San Jose, the United States just has to manage the game. A win, draw or even loss puts the Stars and Stripes through.</p>
<p>In a losing effort, the USMNT can lose by five and still advance. A five-goal difference in defeat, in tandem with Mexico winning, puts the U.S. into the intercontinental playoff.</p>
<p>In FIFA World Cup Qualifying, the first tie breaker is goal difference, followed by total goals scored then head-to-head record.</p>
<h5>One step from qualification</h5>
<p>That is why the offensive bombardment from the U.S. Sunday night against Panama proves so crucial.</p>
<p>Had the U.S. only managed a one-goal win, Costa Rica enters the finale with a sense of hope. After all, the USMNT holds a winless record in World Cup qualifying against Costa Rica. However, the U.S. silenced that probability, even if it is still a miniscule possibility.</p>
<p>That being said, the USMNT had a <a href="https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com/news/espn-has-usa-near-certain-93-percent-odds-qualify-russia-18">93% chance to qualify in 2017</a>. Interestingly, that statistic arose after a 4-0 win in the second-to-last game of qualifying. Moreover, it came in Exploria Stadium, against Panama. A bad omen that it is this eerily similar?</p>
<h3>U.S. offense dominant when it counts</h3>
<h5>The prodigal son</h5>
<p>Christian Pulisic scored the opener in that 2017 game, as he did from the penalty spot on Sunday night.</p>
<p>One of the most talented products to emerge from the United States carries the expectations of a country that has a rapidly growing soccer fan base. The face of the sport among USMNT supporters, he needed to step up when it mattered most.</p>
<p>Entering a game that many fans saw as a must-win, the American starlet converted a pair of first-half penalties. He capped off his hat trick with a silky touch and finish past Luis Mejia in the 65<sup>th</sup> minute.</p>
<p>Speaking about Sunday night’s captain postgame, Berhalter mentioned how Pulisic filled all his roles against Panama.</p>
<blockquote><p>“He was on the field when we didn’t qualify. When I look at his performance, besides the three goals, everything else was in line. His work rate, intensity and leadership.”</p></blockquote>
<p>Equally important for a young USMNT squad, Pulisic came to the defense of his teammates against a staunch Panama side. Although he picked up a yellow card for dissent against Salvadorian referee Iván Barton, he shows leadership for the future generations of U.S. soccer.</p>
<p>It works well with his appearances on the scoresheet, which came in bunches on Sunday night.</p>
<h5><strong>Contrast</strong> from<strong> Thursday</strong></h5>
<p>Periods of the game transpired when Costa Rica maintained possession, holding off players like Pulisic, Jesus Ferreira and Paul Arriola in their press. In fact, Panama finished the game with 61% possession on the road, drawing 23 American fouls.</p>
<p>However, the USMNT was direct in its opportunities when the visitors presented them.</p>
<p>While capturing five goals, the USMNT mustered five shots on target. Of course, Panama helped create its own demise in part. Two penalties given away in silly fashion practically gift-wrapped two of Pulisic’s goals.</p>
<p>Yet, Christian Pulisic, as well as other players, missed clear-cut opportunities against Mexico. This includes forcing Guillermo Ochoa into a save of what should be converted 10 times out of 10 by one of America’s most prominent names.</p>

<p>Fans expected a bounce back, but not on the level that saw the U.S. offense dominant to the point it put this game to rest after 27 minutes.</p>
<h5>Improvements</h5>
<p>It was far from a perfect game. Panama failed to capitalize on a number of errors among the USMNT back line. Some miscommunications between Zack Steffen and his center backs as well as the occasional spill from Steffen cracked the door for Panama. Eventually, a free kick from five yards outside the 18-yard box broke what would have been the USMNT’s seventh shut out of this qualifying cycle.</p>
<p>Regardless, the Manchester City stopper, along with his MLS-based center backs Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson limited the visitors in their opportunities.</p>
<p>Something else to build off of is the performance of Luca de la Torre. While Pulisic grabs the headlines, de la Torre fit in to a midfield with Tyler Adams and Yunas Musah well. The 23-year-old only made his first start for the national team in February’s 3-0 win against Honduras. His performance in linking a ruthless front three to a stalwart back line should be admired, especially considering the magnitude of this game.</p>
<p>Luca de la Torre, Paul Arriola and others proved crucial despite not being household names. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2022/03/24/usmnt-squad-depth-takes-center-stage-in-last-qualifying-window/">Depth is key for this USMNT team</a>, especially considering the injuries and runs of form with players. Gregg Berhalter says he has full confidence in players he calls into camp.</p>
<blockquote><p>“We talked early on about the next an up mentality. We don’t call people up unless we trust them. It’s about maintaining a high level, and the national team can be difficult. I’m really pleased with guys like Luca, Gianluca Busio,… it makes a difference when you call on these guys to perform.”</p></blockquote>
<h3>Costa Rica in the qualifying finale</h3>
<p>The U.S. did not need a an offense dominant over Mexico. It would have been nice, considering the record in World Cup qualifying the Americans hold while visiting their southern neighbors.</p>
<p>The U.S. needed to have goals in this game. A win was paramount, but building on the goal differential puts the U.S.&nbsp;<em>that much closer&nbsp;</em>to Qatar.</p>
<p>Now, Gregg Berhalter has the option of solidifying his defense in Costa Rica. The U.S. does not need to win. The U.S. does not even need to draw. Rather, the U.S. must maintain a defense that prevents Wednesday’s game from getting out of hand.</p>
<p>Do that much, and the U.S. goes to Qatar in November. A calamity like 2017 is not out of the question, but it would be perhaps even more unfathomable than what happened against Trinidad and Tobago.</p>

<p>Group A in the 2013 Gold Cup consists of Mexico, Canada, Panama, and Martinique with the games being played in Pasadena, Seattle and Denver. Mexico look like the clear favorites in this group, but team selection and recent results may lead to an upset.</p>

<p><strong>Mexico</strong></p>
<p>The team is going through a rough time, losing their first two games in the Confederations Cup where stars such as Guardado, Javier Hernandez and Dos Santos played.&nbsp; The team representing Mexico at the Gold Cup is a composite of mostly young Mexican Primera Division players; none of Mexico’s veteran players will be competing, exemplified by the fact that only one player in their Gold Cup squad has more than 10 caps for the country.&nbsp; The Mexican media feels that leaving the stars at home is a further blow to the nation, believing that winning the Gold Cup will boost confidence among players.</p>
<p>The excitement for this crop of players is borne out of frustration from the failures of the qualifying campaign in which they have mustered only 1 win and 5 draws.&nbsp; Another exciting factor is the return of the Olympic stars.&nbsp; Although Olympic players like Herrara and Aquino have become regulars in the senior team and played in the Confederations Cup, others like Jimenez, Fabian and Cortes will be featuring in the Gold Cup.&nbsp; Despite the weakened starting line-up, many of these players will have a point to prove, so some strong performances are to be expected.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Players to Watch</span> – <strong>Raul Jimenez</strong> is young, quick and helped Club America win the Liguilla this year, even scoring one of his penalties in the shootout.&nbsp; He also helped the Mexican team win Olympic Gold and narrowly missed out on the Confederations Cup.&nbsp; The other player to watch is <strong>Israel Jimenez</strong>, an excellent right back that was a key member in Monterrey’s Clausura topping season.</p>
<p><strong>Canada</strong></p>
<p>In a country where ice hockey is king and Gretzky is God, soccer has not been able to break the ice.&nbsp; Canada’s continuous downward spiral from the time they qualified for the World Cup in 1986 has left the sport in a terrible place. Canada’s coach has decided to focus on youth and included some MLS players, but there are many more in youth teams around the world.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most famous face of Canadian soccer, Dwayne De Rosario, was dropped for the Gold Cup and at his age, 35, this may be an understandable move.&nbsp; Canada has won the cup previously in 2000, but their failings in the CONCACAF region are plain to see; they have not made the last round of the qualifiers since 1998.&nbsp; Turning to unknown youth players may be a positive step, but a sudden jump into the cold water for many of these players may either encourage them or scar them forever.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Players to Watch</span> – <strong>Simeon Jackson</strong> is known to most Premier League viewers when he is playing for Norwich City.&nbsp; The majority of his appearances came from the substitute’s bench this season, but he is a sharp player in front of goal and one of the few Canadians that has reached the top level through perseverance and an excellent goal scoring record in the Championship.&nbsp; Jackson, currently without a club, will also be playing for a new contract and this should motivate him further.&nbsp; <strong>Jonathan Osorio</strong> is another player that should shine at this Gold Cup.&nbsp; The young midfielder is not only a hometown hero at Toronto FC, his field of vision and range of passing is excellent.&nbsp; He generally plays in a traditional central midfielder role and gets into the box, but he can also be used on the wings.</p>
<p><strong>Panama</strong></p>
<p>Panama has an up-and-coming team and they should be able to challenge in the Gold Cup and perhaps even reach the semi-finals.&nbsp; The team is currently still competing for a World Cup spot and are fifth&nbsp;in the group of six with 6 points.&nbsp; If they can secure a fourth&nbsp;place finish, it will allow them to play a play-off game against New Zealand.</p>
<p>Panama is known as a baseball nation, but their recent success on the world stage in soccer is slowly converting the population. Their Gold Cup record in recent years has been very promising, reaching the semi-finals in 2011 after topping their group that included the United States.&nbsp; Unfortunately, the theme of this Gold Cup has been to leave the stars at home and this is exactly what Panama has done.&nbsp; With one eye on Brazil, they have opted to leave superstar Luis “Matador” Tejada behind in order to rest him for the upcoming qualification games against Honduras and Jamaica, both winnable games in the eyes of the Panamanians.&nbsp; Their squad, however, is not as depleted as Mexico’s having included many of their regular national team players.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Players to watch:</span> <strong>Blas Perez</strong> is one of Panama’s most accomplished players and has been a prolific scorer while at FC Dallas.&nbsp; He is close behind Tejada’s goalscoring (35) record with 29 goals and is in good form.&nbsp; Including him shows that the country wants to get out of the group and perhaps push for an appearance at the Final.&nbsp; <strong>Alberto Quintero Medina</strong> is another great player and is an accomplished goal scorer from the midfield.&nbsp; He has been a key player in Panama’s recent success and at 25, still has a long way to push his country to the first world cup.</p>
<p><strong>Martinique</strong></p>
<p>This team is not an independent nation and not a member of FIFA.&nbsp; The island is ruled by France and exists as an overseas department and its players qualify for the national team through French citizenship.&nbsp; The country does not have much history in the soccer world besides winning the Caribbean Cup in 1993, so this won’t be their first appearance at the Gold Cup. The team participated in three Gold Cups to date and made it to the quarter finals in 2002.&nbsp; This will be their first appearance in 10 years and no one is expecting them to qualify for the knockout stages.&nbsp; They finished fourth in the Caribbean Cup, topping their group, which included Caribbean heavy-weights Cuba and Jamaica.&nbsp; Martinique should not be underestimated, but their group makes it hard for anyone to imagine that they have a chance.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Players to Watch</span> – <strong>Frederic </strong><strong>Piquionne</strong> is perhaps best known for his string of great performances for a struggling West Ham side as well as helping Portsmouth reach the FA Cup Final.&nbsp; He is by far the team’s best players and perhaps one of the most accomplished players at this tournament, too bad he plays for such a minnow.</p>
<p><strong>Predictions</strong></p>
<p>Based on recent results and the teams selected, first place may be hard to predict.&nbsp; Mexico and Panama drew recently in a World Cup qualifier and everyone is expecting both to make the next round.&nbsp; Canada faced Panama in the third&nbsp;round of the World Cup qualifiers and shared the spoils, each team winning one game, but with Canada’s inexperienced squad and Panama’s continuous improvement, odds are in favor of the Central American team. First place is between Mexico and Panama, with Canada finishing third&nbsp;and Martinique last with 0 points.</p>
