Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is unfazed by criticism of his team’s performance against Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Despite their 1-0 win, Barcelona were far from the form they showcased prior to the international break against Celta. It took a header from defender Jeremy Mathieu in the 73rd minute to secure all three points for La Blaugrana and restore their four-point advantage over second place Real Madrid.

Following the match, Mathieu admitted the international break had temporarily broken the team’s momentum. While fans and the Catalan press expressed concern over the fitness of star man Lionel Messi, as well as the overall performance of the squad against Celta.

Speaking ahead of his side’s mid-week encounter with Almeria, Enrique stressed that moments like this were part of football and said he saw no signs of concern with the team.

“It’s all part of a tough season. There isn’t a side that plays the same for all thirty-eight games,” Enrique said.

“When the day comes that a team plays every game well, football will be in a sorry and boring state. I haven’t seen anything to concern me.”

Since losing to Real Sociedad in early January, Barcelona have now won nineteen of twenty games in all competitions while outscoring their opponents 62-14. They have progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals – where they will face Paris Saint-Germain – and are set to square off against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final, which will be held on May 30 at the Camp Nou.

Despite admitting he is happy with his side’s current position, Enrique stressed the importance of winning titles and continuing to get results in order to hold off an expected late-season charge from Real Madrid.

“It’s not an unpleasant place to be,” the manager said. “It’s where we want to be, fighting for every title available. But we’re also realistic and now we have to win them, which is the difficult part.

“We have to gain more points than the second-placed team and that starts tomorrow. Everything else is just speculation that doesn’t interest us.”

“We’re in a privileged position, but the lead has changed hands twice already. Being in that position doesn’t mean it will finish up that way.”
