With less than a week remaining before the transfer window closes across Europe’s top leagues, clubs are making their final moves to complete sales and signings ahead of the 2025–26 season. Among those making a late push is a Premier League giant targeting Barcelona’s <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/fermin-lopez/">Fermin Lopez</a>.



“<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/chelsea/">Chelsea</a> have made a move and submitted a firm offer to Barça’s offices to sign the Spanish international worth €50 million,” Sport reported Tuesday. The midfielder has been at the center of transfer rumors all summer, but this is the first concrete bid for his services.



The offer from England is financially tempting for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/barcelona/">Barcelona</a>, though it poses a sporting dilemma. The Catalan side continues to face serious financial fair play issues under La Liga regulations—so much so that they’ve been unable to register some of their players for the current season.



During this transfer window, the Blaugrana have added just three players: goalkeeper Joan Garcia, right winger Roony Bardghji, and Marcus Rashford. However, Bardghji, along with Wojciech Szczesny and Gerard Martin, have yet to be registered in La Liga due to those financial constraints. A sale of Lopez could help unlock those registrations.

Still, from a sporting perspective, losing him would be a major blow for head coach Hansi Flick. Last season, Fermin played 46 matches and scored 8 goals, serving as a key option even though he never secured a permanent spot in the starting lineup. His enormous potential makes him one of the club’s most promising long-term assets.

Lopez played a significant role for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/barcelona/">Barcelona</a> last season, appearing in 46 matches and recording 8 goals and 11 assists across La Liga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España, and the UEFA Champions League. However, he wasn’t always a first-choice option for coach Hansi Flick, as he rotated in and out of the lineup with players like Pedri, Gavi, and Dani Olmo.



Barcelona’s depth in midfield means his departure likely wouldn’t be a major sporting setback, while the more than $80 million fee could prove extremely useful to the club. “It would immediately solve all the financial issues related to the first team,” Sport added. “A transfer of this magnitude would allow Barça to register all their renewals, new signings, and even dream of one or two more additions.”

Still, there may be a major obstacle to making this deal happen: Fermin’s own wishes. “His camp communicated that there was interest from several clubs, but that the midfielder wants to stay at Barça no matter what… the academy product has already turned down multiple Premier League projects,” the Spanish outlet noted.

Barcelona’s defense has not been the record-setting figure it was last season, and that should excite Bellingham. In 2022/23, Barcelona conceded just 20 goals. That was 16 fewer than Real Madrid’s last campaign. However, in 2023/24, Barcelona has already given up half that total. Its 10 goals against are only tied for fourth best in the league. 



<h2>Young stars at Barcelona get reinforcement before El Clasico</h2>



Regardless, Barcelona and Xavi have done enough to maintain the only unbeaten record in LaLiga. While those 10 games did produce three draws, the Catalan club has no shortage of creativity. New signing Joao Felix has been instrumental since coming over on loan from Atletico Madrid. Ilkay Gundogan has been a reliable and calming source in the midfield following his move from Manchester City.

Still, their candidacy to play is a boost for the club.



Moreover, some of the younger players will see it as an opportunity to prove themselves. Throughout his time managing Barcelona, Xavi has made decisions based on form rather than name.
