Chelsea sacked head coach Thomas Tuchel. The announcement on Wednesday shocked many across social media. In his time at Stamford Bridge, the German brought significant silverware to the club.

The decision to fire Tuchel comes just a day after the Blues flopped in the opening Champions League match. Chelsea traveled to face Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday and failed to score against the Croatian club.

Along with the disappointing night in Zagreb, the Blues started slow in the Premier League this season. Tuchel managed just three victories in the first six league matches. It is not necessarily the fact that Chelsea is not living up to its lofty standards that dealt the final blow.

Chelsea spent more than any other club in Europe in the summer of 2022. The gross spending in 2022 reached $310 million, with the club only reaching $65 million in player sales to cope with those fees.

Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club,” an official statement read. “Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.”

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.”

Now, new owner Todd Boehly must find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel. The early candidates have relatively successful Premier League experience. For instance, former boss of Tottenham Hotspur and PSG Mauricio Pochettino is a name in the mix. Same goes for Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter, who is travelling to London on Wednesday to meet with the club.

Pochettino is currently without club after he was also fired earlier this summer. Potter, on the other hand, is still on the south coast with Brighton. The Seagulls already granted Chelsea permission to speak with their head coach. Potter, however, does have a buy-out clause in his current contract with Brighton.

Chelsea’s next match is a Premier League meeting with Fulham on Saturday.
