Carlos Marinelli signed by Kansas City

It’s always nice when Major League Soccer signs a foreign player whose name I recognize. Argentine Carlos Marinelli is a pure #10, whose four years at Middlesbrough were troubled, and Marinelli only started 43 games for the Boro despite being annoited as the clubs next great player. Since leaving the Riverside in 2004, Marinelli has floated around some other well known international clubs: Torino of Serie A, Braga and Boca Juniors. He has however failed to stick anywhere. Nonetheless a player of his quality normally does not consider MLS, so this is as good a non Beckham rule signing that MLS can make. Also, Marinelli is still only 25, so he could be an impact player for the Wizards for many years.

Yes Kansas City crushed your beloved DC today and none of the Americans you glorify in Europe scored today. Nor have any scored for the national team this year.

Boro have had three or four ‘next great things’ at various times in the last decade or so.

They generally started brightly, got hailed as the ‘new Ryan Giggs’, then struggled, and finally shipped out to never be heard of again.

There was one fella who couldn’t hold down a place in the team, went off to some dodgy league where he was player of the season, came back on loan and STILL couldn’t deliver the goods, went back to the dodgy foreign league and continued to be one of the best in that league.

His name was Jamie…Jamie Moran or something. Wonder what happened to him…

Which is a long way of saying that Marinelli could make an impact, it’s pretty hard to tell sometimes.

But I’m betting he’s probably bobbins.

All I really remember of him were those buck teeth, rubbish highlights in his hair and a utterly out-of-character and uncalled-for two-footed lunge that was probably his bit of action in a Boro shirt.
