<p>Galatasaray Spor Kulübü dates to 1905, and is based on the European side of the Bosporus in Istanbul – the most populous city in all of Europe.</p>



<p>The football team is a part of a larger sports club umbrella that includes a notable basketball program amongst many other sports. The traditional colors of Galatasaray are a halved dark red and yellow shirt with white shorts.</p>



<p>The club was founded by students at the Galatasaray High School – a school which itself dates all the way to 1481 and is the club’s namesake.</p>



<p>Early on the club participated in the Istanbul League, eventually winning fifteen titles in the regional competition.</p>



<p>When the national Süper Lig was founded in 1959, Galatasaray was a member and have never dropped out of the league since. They first won the competition in 1962, and have taken home top honors 22 more times since. They’ve also won the Turkish Cup more often than any other club, with a record 18 titles.</p>



<p>In Europe, however, just a lone UEFA Cup (and bonus Super Cup) triumph in 2000 graces the vast club trophy room.</p>



<p>The rivalries between Galatasaray and fellow Istanbul sides Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş are some of the fiercest anywhere in the world. Galatasaray is the most decorated of the three, however.</p>

<p>Wilfried Zaha, one of Crystal Palace’s most recognizable players ever, is on his way to Turkey with Galatasaray. The English winger’s contract at Selhurst Park expired at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. Therefore, his move to the Turkish Süper Lig was free. Zaha spent over a decade several stints with the first team at Crystal Palace. Yet, before then, he joined the youth academy at Crystal Palace with the U-10 side.</p>



<p>In total, the Ivorian played 458 games with Crystal Palace. He scored 90 goals and provided 46 assists over that time. His appearance count ranks third all-time at Crystal Palace. Then, he ranks 10th all-time when it comes to goals scored for the club. </p>



<p>With Galatasaray, Zaha will have the chance to do something he never did at Crystal Palace, play in Europe. While <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> was playing in European action during Zaha’s time at Old Trafford, he never made an appearance. However, this past season, Galatasaray punched a ticket to the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. It got there by winning the Turkish Süper Lig.</p>



<p>The Ivorian winger made his first public appearance in front of the Galatasaray faithful this weekend. The Turkish club beat out Saudi clubs, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">PSG</a>, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12279625/Wilfried-Zaha-make-decision-future-amid-PSG-Napoli-Saudi-Arabia-interest.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lazio, Napoli and rivals Fenerbahce</a> to land Zaha. </p>

<h2>Wilfried Zaha says emotional farewell to Palace after Galatasaray move</h2>



<p>The star took to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CvDgn92MI-n/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Instagram</a> to bid his farewell to Crystal Palace. He thanked the fans and many of his teammates and coaches for affording him the chance to play in the Palace kit.</p>



<p>“I’ve been wearing the Palace shirt since I was 8 years old, it’s literally been my second skin and I always gave everything when I wore it,” Zaha wrote. “I grew up two roads away from the bright lights and loud crowds of Selhurst Park, having no idea that I would be at the center of it all one day, and have the amazing journey I’ve had with this amazing club.”</p>



<p>Some of Zaha’s former teammates at Crystal Palace, including Christian Benteke, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Yannick Bolasie, commented on Zaha’s post.</p>

Wilfried Zaha completes move to Galatasaray as free agent

<p>Most transfer windows across Europe slammed shut on September 1. However, teams in Turkey could make moves up until Thursday. Juan Mata and Mauro Icardi are just a couple of the players to make a late move over to Turkey. Both signed for Süper Lig club and Turkish giant Galatasaray.</p>
<p>Mata, now 34, joins the club after spending the last eight-and-a-half seasons with <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a>. He arrives on a free transfer with a <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1567982760421376000" target="_blank" rel="noopener">salary in the area of $2 million</a>.</p>
<p>“I feel so good,” <a href="https:\/\/www.galatasaray.org/haber/futbol/juan-mata-taraftarimizin-onunde-mucadele-etmek-icin-sabirsizlaniyorum/51665" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the Spaniard on his move to Galatasaray. “I am excited and very motivated. I’m grateful for being here. Everyone is being very friendly. I can’t wait to win with Galatasaray.”</p>
<p>Along with Mata, Galatasaray made a loan move for <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">PSG</a> forward Mauro Icardi. The Argentine striker was previously one of the top targets for clubs all over Europe. After a massively successful spell at <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-milan-tv-schedule/">Inter Milan</a>, he was purchased by PSG in a $55 million deal two years ago. Icardi eventually fell down the pecking order with the Parisians but will now get his chance to shine in Turkey. Also, PSG retains some of his contract, making him more of a bargain for Galatasaray.</p>

<p>“I got a lot of offers this summer,” <a href="https:\/\/www.galatasaray.org/haber/futbol/mauro-icardi-gollerime-galatasarayda-devam-etmek-istiyorum/51664" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> Icardi.&nbsp; “We had long dialogues with [team vice president] Mr. Erden. As a result, I came here. He did everything he could. I’m so happy to finally be here.”</p>
<h3>Mata, Icardi not alone in switch to Turkey</h3>
<p>Also, Icardi set his sights on European qualification with his new club. “Hopefully we can bring this team back to the top level again,” stated the striker. “Galatasaray is a team that always aims high. We want to be a part of it. The players, the staff, all the fans want to celebrate it by introducing another Champions League night.”</p>
<p>The massive club will look to bounce back after finishing a very disappointing 13th in the Süper Lig last season. Gala also made other marquee signings such as Dries Mertens, Lucas Torreira, Yusuf Demir, and Haris Seferovic in the summer as well.</p>
<p>Süper Lig teams across the country brought in big names in the sport throughout the transfer period. Mesut Ozil, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/02/michy-batshuayi-transfers-to-fenerbahce-from-chelsea/">Michy Batshuayi</a>, Gedson Fernandes, Dele Alli, Bertrand Traore, and Nathan Redmond all swapped clubs to play in Turkey.</p>

<p>PSV Eindhoven, led by Noni Madueke, routed Ajax 4-0 last Saturday in the annual season curtain-raiser, the Johan Cruyff Shield (Dutch-equivalent to the English Community Shield).&nbsp; A first-half brace from Madueke followed by second-half strikes from substitute Yorbe Vertessen and Mario Götze condemned Ajax to their worst defeat against a domestic opponent since January 2019. PSV also were aided by Ajax left-back Nicolás Tagliafico’s reckless red card five minutes before the half, which enabled the two late-second-half goals to pile on further misery.</p>
<p>For Madueke, 2021/22 will be a massive season. Following a year in which he scored seven Eredivisie goals and contributed four assists,&nbsp;<a href="https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-latest-mikkel-damsgaard-noni-madueke-b949083.html">several clubs abroad</a> are already monitoring the youngster, and his stock will unquestionably have skyrocketed after last week’s victory.</p>

<h3>PSV Eindhoven season preview</h3>
<p>The significance of the outcome for PSV cannot be overstated. Domestically, it was the club’s first win over Ajax in three years and the largest since September 2013.&nbsp; Despite their second place finish in the league this past season, PSV Eindhoven struggled against top competition. The club did not win any any of their matches against Ajax, Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar. They came close twice against Ajax, drawing in both their league meetings. This includes conceding an equalizer in the 92nd minute at home against Ajax after leading 2-0.</p>
<p>However, the 4-0 win in the Johan Cruyff Shield may end up becoming a psychological turning point for PSV in the Eredivisie.</p>
<p>Additionally, the club’s success in UEFA Champions League qualification will only boost their spirits. Four wins in four games against decent opposition can go a long way in terms of development. To emphasize, a dominating 7-2 aggregate rout of Galatasaray preceded two shutout wins over Danish side Midjtylland, 4-0 on aggregate. The victories put manager Roger Schmidt’s side one tie away from the Champions League group stage. Their final hurdle is a two-game tie against Portuguese side Benfica.</p>
<p>Yet, European dominance might be too tall of an order for this season. The Eredivisie is undoubtedly their primary focus.</p>

<p>PSV’s squad is surely capable of achieving this.&nbsp; Despite the <a href="https:\/\/www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/who-is-donyell-malen-borussia-dortmund-s-new-dutch-forward-jadon-sancho-16679">loss of Donyell Malen</a>, who bagged a team-high 19 last season, there are attacking options in the wake. Zahavi and speedy winger Cody Gakpo, scorers of 11 and seven goals in 2020/21 respectively, join Madueke as the strike force. Left-back Philipp Max contributed eight assists, mostly from getting up the pitch and crossing into the box. Midfielder Götze, who joined PSV from Dortmund on a free transfer last summer, has also settled into Dutch football.&nbsp; He has already scored four times this season, showcasing his raw talent and ability that once prompted Pep Guardiola and Bayern Munich to spend over $40 million on him back in 2013.</p>
<p>Then there is star right-back and club captain Denzel Dumfries. The 25-year-old Dutch international starred at Euro 2020, where his impressive performances <a href="https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/everton-transfers-coutinho-dumfries-21254251">have attracted attention</a> from the likes of Everton and Inter Milan.&nbsp; If PSV were to lose their leader it would be a huge setback, but they have prepared for the eventuality. Dumfries’ expected replacement is Austrian Phillipp Mwene, who has started in the right-back position for all four of PSV’s competitive matches, after joining the Dutch club on a free transfer from Mainz in June.&nbsp; His performance this season will go a long way in determining how far PSV can go toward dethroning Ajax.</p>
<p>It is only one match, but Roger Schmidt and PSV set a warning for 2021/22. A 4-0 rout of the presumptive favorites does not go unnoticed.</p>

<h3>Ajax’s plan going forward</h3>
<p>Despite Ajax suffering their worst defeat in two and a half years, there is no reason for the club to panic. Manager Erik ten Hag can point to the fact that after conceding the early goal to Madueke, his side responded superbly. Steven Berghuis hit the crossbar off a header in the eighth minute before Sébastian Haller had a goal disallowed due to offside via a VAR check. Ajax’s high pressing and movement were excellent, before getting hit on the break for PSV’s second.&nbsp; Even then, they were still in the match, before Tagliafico’s careless sending off.&nbsp; Unsurprisingly, it can be hard to enforce their team press and expanded movement playing down a man.</p>
<p>Still, Ajax bring back the core of their title winning team that finished 16 points clear of PSV Eindhoven. Captain and talisman Dušan Tadić led the squad in both league goals (14) and assists (17) in 2020/21. Davy Klassen and Haller bring more attacking threat, posting 12 and 11 goals respectively.&nbsp; Haller’s production is especially expected to skyrocket, considering he only signed for the club in January. Ten Hag can also count on 19-year-old midfield sensation Ryan Gravenberch, who made an appearance in all but two league matches last year.</p>

<p>And then there is Berghuis, the 29-year-old right-winger who signed with Ajax for $6 million after four seasons with Feyenoord. The acquisition of Berghuis is a massive coup for the champions. First off, Berghuis brings exceptional talent to an already-deep squad. The winger slotted 18 goals to go along with 12 assists the previous season. Secondly, Ajax simultaneously, added a great talent and took one away from one of their rivals. Like Luis Figo transfering from Barcelona to Real Madrid, this <a href="https:\/\/www.sportbible.com/football/news-feyenoord-captain-steven-berghuis-joins-rivals-ajax-in-most-controvers-20210716">transfer is one of the most controversial</a> in Dutch history. While Berghuis is no Figo, he is still one of the most talented footballers in the Eredivisie, and his presence on this Ajax team will only make them more formidable.</p>

<h3>Keeping perspective on the match</h3>
<p>Yes, PSV Eindhoven lifted a trophy for the first time in four seasons. However, many supporters and pundits point out that this contest was largely a preseason game.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, PSV’s shock rout over defending champions Ajax (in Ajax’s home ground) will serve as a wakeup call for the Amsterdam royalty. It may provide the Eredivisie with the competitive title race it desperately needs.</p>

PSV sends Ajax warning shot for 21/22 Eredivisie

<p>This leg of our European tour starts in France where Bordeaux revived their Ligue 1 title hopes when Pierre Ducasse’s <a href="http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com/video/x5b9f6_but-ducasse-om-bordeaux-4-mai-2008_sport">stunning 25-metre strike</a> in stoppage time earned them a 2-1 win at Olympique Marseille on the weekend. Second-placed Bordeaux, on 71 points with two games left, are two points behind leaders and six-times champions Olympique Lyon, who drew 0-0 at Nice on Saturday.  Marseille now sit fourth, two points behind Nancy, who hold the qualifying spot for the Champions League third preliminary round following their 3-0 thrashing of strugglers Racing Strasbourg on Saturday. St Etienne stay fifth, four points adrift of fourth-placed Marseille with Lille a further point behind.</p>
<p>On to Germany, where there were some mid-week games and of importance was <a href="http:\/\/101greatgoals.magnify.net/item/P6NZ456VRRDW6S0P">Werder Bremen winning 1-0</a> at Hamburger SV despite finishing with nine men. The win clinches a top-three finish for Werder, and at least a place in the Champions League qualifiers, for themselves and Schalke 04.  Hamburg and VfB Stuttgart are in fourth and fifth on 51 points, meaning the best they can now hope for is qualification for the UEFA Cup.  Bayer Leverkusen, who were beaten 2-1 at home by Hertha Berlin on Wednesday, remain in sixth place on 48 points.</p>
<p>Next we stop off in Romania and say congratulations to CFR Cluj, from the city of Cluj-Napoca, who were crowned Romanian champions for the first time on Wednesday after a 1-0 win over Universitatea Cluj. CFR finished on 76 points, one point ahead of Steaua Bucharest who ended their campaign with a 5-0 rout of Gloria Buzau. CFR Cluj becomes the first team outside of Bucharest to win Liga I in 17 years. A penalty 15 minutes into the second half from Manuel Riccardo Cadu, after Brazilian Correia Edvan had fouled Argentine substitute striker Diego Ruiz, handed CFR victory. Unfortunately it was not all happy times as riot police had to fire tear gas to disperse Universitatea fans who attempted to attack CFR supporters. A special congrats to Canadian goalkeeper 	Lars Hirschfeld after leaving Norwegian club Rosenborg BK.</p>
<p>In Bulgaria, CSKA Sofia claimed their 31st Bulgarian league title finishing well ahead of Levski and Lokomotiv Sofia, both of whom will take part in the Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round. CSKA Sofia are entered into the 3rd Qualifying Round. CSKA had a truly dominant season allowing only 9 goals in 28 matches while scoring 50 times.</p>
<p>In Serbia, Partizan Belgrade recently won their 10th national cup with a 3-0 rout of second division neighbours Zemun thanks to a hat-trick by Senegalese striker Lamine Diarra. Zemun could become the first third-division Serbian side to play in Europe as they are four points adrift of safety with as many matches remaining in the second tier but they will qualify for the UEFA Cup if league leaders Partizan complete the double. They are currently 3 points up on last year’s champions FK Crvena Zvezda. The winner of the league is entered into the Champions League Second Qualifying Round, while the runner-up is in the UEFA Cup Second Qualifying Round.</p>
<p>The champions of Croatian football are once again Dinamo Zagreb, who won the league title last month with six games to spare. They will enter the competition at the very first qualifying round of the Champions League while runners-up Hajduk Split will be entered into UEFA Cup qualifying.</p>
<p>In the Czech Republic, Sparta Prague are closing in on their 35th league title but dropped valuable points at the weekend after a 2-0 loss to FC Brno. That allowed their bitter city foes Slavia Prague to come within a point after a win over Olomouc. With two games left Slavia’s title challenge is back on after leading the table through much of the early season then faltering in form. In recent weeks Sparta and Slavia have taken turns faltering which has made the run-in quite exciting and unpredictable. Whoever wins the league will get a place in the Third Qualifying Round while the runner-up starts in the Second Qualifying Round.</p>
<p>Next door we check in on the Slovakian Corgon Liga where FC Artmedia Petržalka (FC Artmedia Bratislava) can now claim their first ever league and cup double after taking home the Slovakian Cup (Slovenský Pohár) by defeating FC Spartak Trnava 1-0 in Zilina. Artmedia are sitting six points ahead of second-place side MSK Zilina in the league.</p>
<p>In Turkey, Galatasaray held off the challenge of rivals, and this year’s surprise package in the Champions League, Fenerbahçe. Shabani Nonda led the way for Galatasaray with 14 goals after his transfer from A.S. Roma. Nonda also had a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers before moving permanently away from Italy. The real strength of the team was at the back as they only allowed 23 goals in 33 games in a league that can be quite high-scoring. The backline was bolstered by the emergence of Emre Güngör who pushed former Liverpool defender Rigobert Song to the substitutes bench in the second half of the season. The 23-year-old was rumoured to be sought after by Fenerbahce but he ended up signing with Galatasaray and they will hope to keep hold of him for a few seasons.</p>
<p>Finally we stop in Greece, where the Super League was won by Olympiacos finishing ahead of AEK Athens by a mere two points. Caretaker manager José Segura has done an admirable job guiding the team to the title after Takis Lemonis was fired for sub-par league performances despite a strong run in the Champions League. A special attaboy to Canadian striker Tomasz Radzinski who finished fourth in the Greek league scoring with 14 goals from 21 appearances for AC Skoda Xanthi.</p>
