<h2>Saliba joins Alexander-Arnold at top of Real Madrid wish list</h2>



Outside of Rodri and Alexander-Arnold, Real also wants to improve in central defense. The Independent believes that the Spanish side will pick between Arsenal’s William Saliba or Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero. Saliba has grown into arguably the best center-back in the world at the moment. The Frenchman has been a mainstay in manager Mikel Arteta’s impeccable defense in recent years.



With Saliba in the team, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> posted the best defensive record in the entire Premier League last season. So far this campaign, the Gunners have only allowed one goal, and the strike came as the team was down to 10 men. Like Rodri, Saliba is also under contract until 2027, and his current club will likely do everything they can to keep the star.



If a move for Saliba does not work out, Romero seems to be Real’s plan B. The World Cup-winning Argentine defender has also been a rock in central defense for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/tottenham-tv-schedule/">Spurs</a>. Real could be aided in their possible pursuit of Romero by the fact that they have a solid business relationship with Tottenham. The center-back is under contract at Spurs until 2027 as well, but unlike Rodri and Saliba, he is still on his original contract.

Real Madrid to target Saliba, Alexander-Arnold next summer

Real Madrid is reportedly ready to flex their financial muscles by targeting William Saliba and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

France national team manager Didier Deschamps has revealed that he “does not favor” <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> star William Saliba. The center-back is widely regarded by many as one of the top players in his position in all of Europe. Since breaking into the north London club’s starting XI, the young Frenchman has become a mainstay in the back line.



Saliba has started every single <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> match for the league leaders so far this season. The defender is now a vital player for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. With Saliba partnering Gabriel just in front of goalkeeper David Raya, Arsenal currently has the best defensive record in the English top flight. The Gunners have only allowed 24 total goals in 28 league fixtures during the current campaign.



Saliba’s importance in the Arsenal team was on display last season as well. The Gunners were leading the league for much of the campaign with the center-back in the squad. However, the Frenchman suffered a back injury and missed the final 11 matches of the season. Arsenal struggled without the star and ultimately finished second in the standings behind winners <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a>. The Gunners only won five of these 11 games without Saliba.



<h2>French coach claims he has better options in the squad than Arsenal star</h2>



Despite his importance for his club, Deschamps has regularly opted for other players in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/france-national-team-tv-schedule/">France</a> national team. Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate, and even Benjamin Pavard have occupied the back line more regularly for the French manager in recent months.



Deschamps was asked about Saliba during a recent press conference. The coach did not hold back his opinions regarding the Arsenal star. “He is having a good season, but he also does things that I don’t like so much,” <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/didier-deschamps-william-saliba-arsenal-fc-france-b1147620.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Deschamps.

“For France, he has limited game time, but when he plays, that hasn’t necessarily gone well. The hierarchy doesn’t favor him at the moment, but he is here. Dayot Upamecano has had game time and perhaps William has had less.”



“With certain players, I make sure to persevere, because it can be confidence or little blockages that can shift.”



<h2>France thumped by Germany without William Saliba in the team</h2>



With Saliba on the bench, France fell 2-0 to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/germany-national-team-tv-schedule/">Germany</a> on March 23. Upamecano and Pavard were picked by Deschamps as the two starting center-backs. German playmaker Florian Wirtz scored just six seconds into the match, the fastest goal in his team’s history. 



Kai Havertz then added the second goal just after the halftime break. Jamal Musiala sliced up the French defense before Havertz put the ball into the net as both Upamecano and Pavard failed to block the shot.



The decision by Deschamps is interesting considering Upamecano and Pavard are now not regular starters for their clubs. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bayern-munich-tv-schedule/">Bayern</a> defender has not started a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/bundesliga-tv-schedule/">Bundesliga</a> match since February 18th. Upamecano earned a red card in this particular match, a defeat against Bochum. Pavard, on the other hand, has only managed to start 15 of 23 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/serie-a-tv-schedule/">Serie A</a> matches with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-milan-tv-schedule/">Inter Milan</a> so far this season.



With the 2024 Euros approaching, Deschamps will have to make some tough decisions in his team’s back line. <a href="https://inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men">FIFA</a> currently ranks France second in the world only behind 2022 World Cup winners <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina</a>. The French team is entering the upcoming tournament as one of the favorites to lift the trophy.

France national team manager Didier Deschamps has criticized Arsenal star William Saliba as coach gives defender limited playing time.

Arsenal defenders Oleksandr Zinchenko and William Saliba are out of commission for the rest of the 2022/23 campaign. As the Gunners cling to Premier League title hopes, it will be without two of its integral players for the final three games. 



According to David Ornstein of <a href="https://theathletic.com/4423917/2023/05/11/william-saliba-zinchenko-arsenal-injury/">The Athletic</a>, both players have injuries that rule them out for the final few weeks. Saliba has already missed the last eight Premier League fixtures with back pain picked up against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/arsenal-and-sporting-go-the-distance-in-europa-league-classic-20230316-WST-423613.html">Sporting in the Europa League</a>. Before that, he started <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.us/william-saliba/leistungsdaten/spieler/495666" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">each of the 27 Premier League games</a> for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a>. Zinchenko picked up a calf injury during the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/arsenal-grab-vital-win-over-newcastle-to-keep-title-hopes-alive-20230507-WST-431968.html">club’s win at Newcastle</a> at the weekend. The Ukrainian has been a massive boost for Arsenal this season, playing a free role in attack following his defensive duties.



On the bright side for Arsenal supporters, Ornstein claims neither player should require surgery. Instead, this just happens to rule them out for a couple of weeks. It is merely unfortunate timing that it comes at a pivotal point in the season. Saliba has seen two replacements in his stead. Rob Holding started the majority of games since the Frenchman’s injury. However, Jakub Kiwior started each of Arsenal’s last two games. For Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney is the natural replacement at full-back.

<h2>Zinchenko and Saliba are major misses for Arsenal</h2>



Zinchenko and Saliba were mainstays of the Arsenal lineup each week. The French centerback’s absence thus far has been felt in the Gunners’ back line. Prior to his departure, Arsenal conceded less than a goal per game. In the last eight games, though, Arsenal conceded 14 times. That includes <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/man-city-closes-in-on-premier-league-title-with-win-over-arsenal-20230426-WST-430242.html">a 4-1 loss at the hands of Manchester City</a>. 



Despite not being captain, Zinchenko has been an emotional leader for the side. Each time Arsenal concedes, Zinchenko is the man to huddle the players up and get them back on track. Of course, with Saliba’s absence, that was happening with a little more frequency than he perhaps preferred. 



Arsenal’s first of its final three games is this weekend against Brighton and Hove Albion. The Gunners need <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> to drop points. Not only does the Sky Blue side of Manchester hold a one-point edge in the table, but it has also played one fewer game than Arsenal.
