One of Lionel Messi‘s Argentina teammates is caught in the center of a financial storm as his club faces the risk of exclusion from UEFA competitions for the next 2026-27 season. The European soccer governing body’s tightening Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules are bringing this club’s precarious financial situation into the spotlight. While some Serie A clubs are thriving under the updated regulations, this club must scramble to secure its future—both on and off the pitch.

UEFA’s new Financial Fair Play framework represents a significant shift in managing club finances. The updated regulations prioritize sustainable spending and aim to address the financial imbalances exacerbated by the pandemic. These rules rest on four key pillars:

It introduces a significant shift in managing club finances, focusing on sustainable spending and addressing financial imbalances worsened by the pandemic. The regulations are built on four key pillars: clubs must settle their debts within 90 days to avoid sanctions, teams cannot exceed a €60 million deficit over three years, spending on wages, transfer fees, and agent commissions are capped at 70% of a club’s total revenue, and clubs that breach these rules face predefined penalties, including fines or exclusions from European competitions.

While these measures aim to create a level playing field, their implementation has exposed financial vulnerabilities in some of Europe’s top clubs.

Struggles of Serie A giants Roma

The mystery club in question is none other than Roma, where Lionel Messi’s La Albiceleste colleague Paulo Dybala plies his trade. According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma finds itself in a precarious position, struggling to align its finances with UEFA’s stricter parameters.

The numbers paint a grim picture. The Giallorossi currently carry a debt burden exceeding €600 million, with an €81 million deficit recorded in the past year alone. The club’s failure to meet the intermediate benchmarks set under UEFA’s settlement agreement has set alarm bells ringing.

“If Roma does not improve its financial situation significantly by 2025, it risks automatic exclusion from UEFA competitions for the 2026-27 season,” the report warns. A deficit of over €40 million during the next audit would trigger this harsh penalty.

Not all Italian clubs are in financial distress. Several Serie A teams, such as Napoli, Lazio, Fiorentina, Atalanta, and Bologna, have adapted well to the new FFP regulations. Their sound financial management, coupled with successful campaigns in European competitions, has bolstered their revenues and stabilized their finances.

Napoli, for instance, has achieved financial stability while simultaneously claiming Serie A glory and impressing in the Champions League. Their success underlines the benefits of maintaining a balance between financial prudence and on-field performance.

Race against time for Roma

For Roma, the challenge lies in achieving a similar balance. Under the ownership of the Friedkin family, the club faces a daunting task: reducing its deficit while remaining competitive on the pitch.

With high-profile players like Dybala and Romelu Lukaku leading their squad, Roma has the talent to compete at the highest level. However, sustained financial mismanagement could jeopardize their participation in European soccer. The consequences of exclusion from UEFA competitions would be devastating. It would not only tarnish Roma’s reputation but also severely impact their revenue streams, including broadcast rights and sponsorships.

To secure their future, the Italian side must adopt a dual approach. On one hand, the American owners Friedkins need to restructure the club’s finances, ensuring compliance with UEFA’s FFP rules. On the other hand, Roma must strive for success on the pitch to boost revenues and attract investments.

Paulo Dybala, the Argentinian star currently playing for AS Roma, is once again attracting significant interest from abroad, with Turkish giants Galatasaray reportedly keen on securing his services. This comes just six months after a similar approach from Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, back in Italy, Roma is keeping a watchful eye on the situation.

According to Italian publication Corriere della Sera, Galatasaray’s interest stems from the serious knee injury suffered by Mauro Icardi. The Istanbul-based club, which has long admired Dybala, is reportedly planning to make a substantial offer in the region of €10 million annually.

The compensation AS Roma would receive hinges on Dybala’s contractual status. His current contract expires in June 2025, but it automatically extends until 2026 if he makes seven more appearances. This means Galatasaray could attempt a free transfer in mid-2025 or offer minimal compensation in January, given the contract’s impending expiration.

However, reports from Italy suggest that Dybala himself is not keen on a January departure, unless Roma decides to sell him. AS Roma manager Claudio Ranieri addressed the situation, stating to Sport Media Set: “I like having Dybala in Rome, but if the player has other priorities and doesn’t want to stay, it’s good to comply with his wishes. To date, I haven’t sensed that desire.”

The Boca Juniors whispers

Adding another layer of intrigue to the situation is the recent speculation surrounding a potential return to Argentina for Dybala. These rumors were sparked by comments from Oriana Sabatini, Dybala’s wife, who playfully revealed that Leandro Paredes has been suggesting both he and Dybala return to play for Boca Juniors.

“Leandro Paredes started to plant the idea of both of us returning. I want to return to Argentina, but I’m not ready for family drama,” she said, adding, “If his friend wants me to go to Boca, I’ll go with his friend.”

While Sabatini’s comments, albeit lighthearted, ignited excitement among Boca Juniors fans, the club’s vice-president, Juan Román Riquelme, quickly downplayed the speculation regarding Dybala. He confirmed ongoing talks with Paredes but emphasized that, for now, their focus remains solely on the midfielder: “You hear things… Dybala? He’s been Italy’s star for ten years… Paredes? He’s my friend, I love him, I adore him. I talk to him often, and he’s keen to play abroad for a bit longer. He knows that whenever he wants to return, we have the trust to talk. But I can’t go out every second and say ‘this no, that no’. I adore him and I hope we can have him at the club.”

In a move that could shake up the Turkish Super Lig, a key member of Lionel Messi‘s World Cup-winning Argentina squad is reportedly in advanced talks with Galatasaray. The reigning Turkish champions, faced with an injury crisis following Mauro Icardi’s extended absence, are exploring high-profile reinforcements to maintain their domestic and European ambitions.

The club’s interest in the player, who played a pivotal role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph alongside Lionel Messi, has sent waves through the soccer world. While speculation is rife, sources suggest that negotiations are progressing rapidly, with the player’s agent spotted in Istanbul recently to finalize details. As the transfer saga unfolds, the player at the heart of the speculation is none other than Paulo Dybala, a former Juventus talisman and one of La Albiceleste’s most technically gifted forwards.

The 31-year-old forward has an impressive career résumé, having excelled in leagues across Europe. Known for his finesse, creativity, and goal-scoring prowess, this Argentine star has donned the jerseys of Instituto, Palermo, Juventus, and Roma. His experience in top-tier competitions makes him an attractive option for Galatasaray, a club looking to bolster its attack as Icardi recovers from a knee injury.

According to Sports Digitale, the player’s agent, Carlos Novel, recently traveled to Istanbul, where he held discussions with Galatasaray officials and attended their dramatic 4-3 victory over Trabzonspor. This visible progress in talks signals the club’s determination to secure a deal during the January transfer window.

Offer that could change everything

Reports suggest that Galatasaray is prepared to offer the player a staggering €12 million annual salary, which would make him one of the highest earners in Turkish soccer. Turkish media outlets have echoed this sentiment, with Corriere dello Sport noting that the Argentine is “seriously considering” the offer.

The forward, who joined Roma in 2022, is under contract until the summer of 2024, with an automatic renewal clause set to extend his deal until 2026. However, his current club has not engaged in discussions to spread or revise his salary, leaving the door open for Galatasaray to step in.“If the Giallorossi release him for free, or for minimal compensation, he could seriously consider the move,” writes Corriere dello Sport.

Why Galatasaray?

For Galatasaray, Dybala represents more than a short-term fix. His presence would enhance the club’s attacking depth and bring much-needed flair to their European campaigns. The Istanbul giants have a history of attracting Serie A talent, and signing him would reaffirm their ambitions on the global stage.

The potential transfer also highlights Galatasaray’s appeal to world-class players. Speaking about the club’s strategy, vice-president Metin Ozturk remarked, “Every player wants to play in a team with big goals like Galatasaray.”

In a dramatic twist, Paulo Dybala has rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia and chosen to stay with Roma. He defied expectations and ignited joy among fans. The Argentine star had been on the brink of leaving. Dybala had a rumored $84 million deal with Al-Qadsiah with over three years on the table. Yet, in a move that surprised many, Dybala decided to continue his journey in Italy.

Al-Qadsiah, a newly promoted Saudi club with big ambitions, made several attempts to lure the Argentine away from Roma. The club offered him a staggering $28 million per season for three years. That deal would have made him one of the highest-paid players in the world. Dybala had reportedly already said his goodbyes to his teammates and fans at the Trigoria training ground. Thus, he seemed set to leave.

He even skipped the Serie A photoshoot, signaling that his departure was imminent. However, Roma had not yet accepted the offer from Al-Qadsiah, reportedly worth only $3.3 million plus bonuses. The final decision was left to Dybala, and in the end, he chose to stay.

Emotional goodbye that wasn’t

What prompted this sudden change of heart? According to reports from Sky Italia, the emotional farewell to his teammates. His close friends and fellow Argentinians Leandro Paredes and Matias Soule played a significant role. The realization of leaving behind these relationships, coupled with the outpouring of love from fans, weighed heavily on Dybala. Messages from supporters urging him not to end his European career, as well as advice from his family, also influenced his decision.

Gianluca Di Marzio, a well-known Italian sports journalist, highlighted the impact of Dybala’s family on his decision. They were reportedly not enthusiastic about moving to Saudi Arabia, further tipping the scales in favor of staying in Rome.

Roma fans’ unwavering support for Dybala amid Saudi links

Roma fans had made their feelings clear throughout the summer, protesting outside the club’s training ground and pleading with the management not to sell their star player. Their loyalty and passion were rewarded when Dybala announced on Instagram, “Thank you, Roma. I’ll see you on Sunday.” The announcement sent waves of relief and excitement through the Roma fanbase, who gathered outside the player’s home to celebrate his decision.

Leandro Paredes, Dybala’s teammate at both Roma and the Argentina national team, expressed his joy on social media, posting, “For those who haven’t understood it, he remains with us.” The atmosphere around the Stadio Olimpico has since been electric, with fans eagerly anticipating Dybala’s return to the pitch.

With the 30-year-old staying, the Giallorossi’s hopes for the season are bolstered. Despite entering the final year of his contract, he has an automatic extension clause that activates after 15 official appearances. This clause will see him earn $8.4 million plus $2.2 million in bonuses, a significant sum but far less than what Al-Qadsiah offered.

Since joining the Stadio Olimpico side from Juventus in 2022, Dybala has become an integral part of the team, scoring 34 goals and providing 18 assists in 78 appearances. His decision to stay is a major boost for Roma coach Daniele De Rossi, who now has one of his key players committed to the club for another season.

Dybala's shock U-turn on Saudi move: Roma stay reason known

In a sudden dramatic twist, Paulo Dybala has rejected a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia and chosen to stay with Roma.

Paulo Dybala, the Argentine forward who has become a crucial figure at Roma, is about to embark on his third season in the Italian capital.

Since signing for free two years ago, he has been an integral part of the Giallorossi’s success; his responsibilities might soon become even larger.

Roma’s manager, Daniele De Rossi, is reportedly considering a significant shift in Dybala’s position on the pitch; it could see him take on even greater responsibility in the team’s attack.

However, as the Argentine’s influence at Roma grows, so does interest from several Saudi Arabian clubs; they are eager to lure the star forward away with lucrative offers.

The 30-year-old forward has caught the attention of as many as three Saudi Arabian clubs keen to bring him to the Middle East.

According to Calciomercato, Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad have both made substantial offers to Dybala; with contracts reportedly worth over $16.4 million net per season; potentially rising to $22 million with add-ons.

These offers are tempting, especially considering that the player is in the final year of his contract with Roma.

Dybala is in demand.

Another Saudi club joins race

Adding to the intrigue, a third Saudi club, Al-Qadsiah, has also expressed serious interest in signing Dybala, Corriere dello Sport say.

Backed by the oil giant Aramco, they are ready to offer the 30-year-old a lucrative contract to join their ranks. The club’s interest is so strong that Mohammad Al Sa’ud, president of the PIF Fund has personally stepped in to negotiate with Dybala through an intermediary.

These tempting promises didn’t seem to pique the veteran’s interest in relocating to Saudi Arabia, however.

The Argentine striker has reportedly tied the knot and plans to remain in Rome, where he has just established his home.

Dybala turned down previous offers from the Middle East because he wants to stay in Italy for personal reasons; also because he wants to keep trying to gain a position on the Argentine national team.

Roma’s stance on Dybala’s future

From Roma’s perspective, the club is not keen on losing one of its most valuable players; especially with the Serie A season fast approaching.

While substantial, the offers from Saudi Arabia do not seem to have swayed the club’s resolve. Dybala’s release clause, set at $13 million, was only active during July. With that window now closed, the Italians don’t expect to entertain any bids for their star forward.

Moreover, Dybala’s influence at the club extends beyond his on-field contributions. He has become an important figure in the dressing room; helping to convince players like Matias Soule to join Roma from Juventus this summer.

His leadership and experience are seen as vital components of De Rossi’s project for the upcoming season.

The report adds that there is no indication that Dybala is seeking a move away from Trigoria, Roma’s headquarters.

The absence of any formal request or proposal from the player himself suggests that he is fully committed to the club’s future.

As the start of the Serie A season draws closer, the idea of losing such a key player would likely be met with significant backlash from fans, further solidifying Dybala’s position at the club.
