
<p>The Football Association (FA) wants gambling companies to stop allowing bets on yellow cards during matches. </p>



<p>The governing body of the sport in England has growing concerns of players manipulating incidents to receive extra money. These decisions could end up creating match-fixing problems in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> and lower divisions.</p>



<p><em><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12445829/FA-wants-gambling-companies-STOP-allowing-yellow-card-bets-bid-crack-spot-fixing-amid-rise-high-profile-betting-probes.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mail Sport</a></em> is claiming that the FA has already discussed the move with betting companies and government officials. Premier League execs will likely fully back any decision to ban such bets. Along with potentially banning bets on bookings, the organization is also looking to prohibit other in-game calls as well.</p>

<h2>News comes as Hammers star is under investigation</h2>



<p>The possible crackdown essentially comes down to multiple investigations regarding yellow card incidents in recent years. In fact, there has been at least four inquiries into players receiving bookings in the last five seasons. </p>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/west-ham-tv-schedule/">West Ham’s</a> Lucas Paqueta is the latest player under investigation about possible wrongdoing. The FA is currently investigating <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/fa-looking-into-three-specific-betting-incidents-involving-paqueta-20230823-WST-451678.html">three specific incidents</a> involving the Brazilian star receiving a yellow card. </p>



<p>Two of these bookings occurred in the latter stages of the 2022/23 season. The final incident actually happened in West Ham’s opening match of the current campaign.</p>



<h2>Other refereeing decision also under consideration</h2>



<p>Former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> midfielder Granit Xhaka and Oxford defender Ciaran Brown were also previously investigated for similar incidents. No charges ever stuck.</p>



<p>Former Reading defender Kynan Isac was <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-11327941/FA-hand-career-ending-TEN-YEAR-BAN-former-Reading-defender-Kynan-Isaac.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">handed an incredible 12-year ban</a> for being booked on purpose during an <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/">FA Cup</a> match.</p>



<p>Along with looking to ban bets on bookings, the FA may also consider a similar move with other refereeing decisions as well. </p>



<p>The aforementioned news outlet claims that the total number of corners and penalties awarded by referees could also be nixed by betting companies. Select gambling sites have already removed the ability to bet on bookings.</p>

<p>The investigation into West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta and the betting probe is clearing up. The Football Association (FA) recently <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/west-ham-star-lucas-paqueta-under-investigation-for-betting-20230818-WST-450982.html">opened an inquiry</a> into the possibility of the Brazilian’s involvement in sports betting. This investigation was at such an early stage that the FA did not interview the player. However, more information on the bets is now coming to light.</p>



<p><em><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12434359/Three-Lucas-Paqueta-bookings-scrutiny-FA-gambling-probe-including-match-season.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mail Sport</a></em> is claiming that the governing body of the sport in England is looking into three specific incidents involving Paqueta. All three moments involve the midfielder picking up a yellow card during <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> matches. The first booking in question came in a 1-1 draw with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/aston-villa-tv-schedule/">Aston Villa</a> back in March. Paqueta was shown the yellow card in the 70th minute after a heavy challenge on fellow midfielder John McGinn.</p>



<p>The next incident occurred during a late 2022/23 matchup with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/leeds-united-tv-schedule/">Leeds</a>. Much like the previous booking, Paqueta received a yellow card for a tackle on Crysencio Summerville in the 65th minute of the match. These two moments were the only times in which the Brazilian was cautioned in league play during his club’s final 18 matches.</p>

<h2>Latest Paqueta betting concern came in match this month</h2>



<p>The final questionable moment came in West Ham’s opening Premier League match of the current campaign. Paqueta picked up a yellow card in the final minutes of the fixture with Bournemouth. With the game heading for a 1-1 draw, the Brazilian committed a late foul against on opposing player. </p>



<p>Match referee Peter Bankes did not initially show Paqueta a card for the infraction. However, the Brazilian was eventually cautioned after protesting the call. According to the aforementioned news outlet, the player was not aware of the investigation at the time of the Bournemouth game. This was despite the FA looking into Paqueta’s yellow cards for months.</p>



<h5>Inquiry reportedly affected player’s move to Man City</h5>



<p>This investigation also affected the player’s seemingly pending transfer to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a>. The two Premier League sides had nearly agreed a fee of around $108 million for Paqueta to join the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> winners. Nevertheless, City eventually backed out of the deal for obvious reasons.</p>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/west-ham-tv-schedule/">West Ham</a> has, so far, stood by their player in the investigation. Manager David Moyes selected Paqueta in his starting lineup against <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a>. The Hammers went on to win the game 3-1 on the day. The Brazilian picked up a yellow card in the 35th minute of the match.</p>

The FA has reportedly picked out three incidents involving Lucas Paqueta receiving yellow cards in their betting investigation.


<p>West Ham United star midfielder Lucas Paqueta is under investigation by the Football Association (FA) for breaches of illegal betting. The Brazilian’s potential move to Manchester City collapsed this week after West Ham denied the $70 million move in search of more money. Now, he faces a potential ban.</p>



<p>The <em><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-12421055/West-Ham-star-Lucas-Paqueta-investigated-FA-potential-betting-breaches-70m-transfer-Man-City-collapses.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Daily Mail</a></em> reports the collapse in the deal came as a result of ‘confidential’ concerns. Even though there are no specifics on Paqueta’s alleged betting, sources state he is reaching out for legal advice on how to move forward. The allegations are fresh enough that investigators have not contacted Paqueta for an initial interview. Still, the <em>Daily Mail</em> states that these bets happened in South America. </p>



<p>West Ham spent a club-record fee of $65 million to acquire Paqueta from Lyon last summer. Yet, it looked like the club was ready to turn that into a profit after a European trophy in one season. Manchester City’s interest in Paqueta was a direct result of Kevin De Bruyne’s injury. That inquiry is likely out the door, and West Ham is not likely to pull in the $110 million it desired for the Brazilian. That is not West Ham’s concern now.</p>

<p>Paqueta played well in the opening-day draw against Bournemouth. However, his status for this weekend’s game against Chelsea is still up for debate. If he is able to play, he is a surefire starter in David Moyes’s side. </p>



<h2>Lucas Paqueta betting investigation comes not long after Ivan Toney</h2>



<p>Betting in the Premier League has been a hot topic over the last several months. Brentford striker Ivan Toney picked up a massive suspension for betting on games. His <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/ivan-toney-receives-eight-month-suspension-for-betting-20230517-WST-433319.html">ban lasts eight months</a>, and he will not return to the Bees until the turn of the calendar year. </p>



<p>Again, information regarding Paqueta is vague. For reference, Toney faced <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/ivan-toney-accepts-charges-of-betting-rules-violations-20230301-WST-421809.html">262 charges of betting</a> in a three-year span. Some reports state Paqueta was betting on yellow cards in games. That would raise concerns after Paqueta took a silly yellow card in the 94th minute against Brentford just before Moyes subbed him off.</p>



<p>Ironically, Paqueta’s West Ham uses Betway, a sports gambling website, as its main kit sponsor. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/premier-league-teams-ban-betting-sponsors-on-jerseys-20230413-WST-428305.html">Betting kit sponsors are banned</a> starting with the 2026/27 season.</p>

<p>Manchester City is reportedly interested in acquiring Lucas Paquetá, according to various reports, but West Ham needs the right price to sell its star.</p>



<p>With the departures of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez, Pep Guardiola has lost two vital players this summer. By selling Riyad Mahrez to Al-Ahli, City earned an additional $38 million.</p>



<p>Seeing that Ilkay Gundogan left for Barcelona on a free transfer this summer, the European champions opted to replace him with Mateo Kovacic, who they acquired from Chelsea. But City still on the lookout for more offensive reinforcements.</p>



<h5>Midfielder caught the eye of Pep Guardiola</h5>



<p>The Brazilian media is reporting that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> made a verbal offer to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/west-ham-tv-schedule/">West Ham</a> for Lucas Paquetá. After arriving in London for $61 million from Lyon a year ago, Paquetá made a strong first impression.</p>

<h2>West Ham expects larger price for Paquetá after initial rejection</h2>



<p>The Sky Blues even made a $89 million offer for the Brazilian midfielder during negotiations this week, as reported by <a href="https://ge.globo.com/futebol/futebol-internacional/futebol-ingles/noticia/2023/08/08/manchester-city-faz-proposta-de-r-437-milhoes-por-lucas-paqueta.ghtml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Globo Esporte</a>. However, David Moyes’ side has already said that they would not accept the offer and instead seek a greater sum.</p>

<p>Despite the rejected offer, Fabrizio Romano says the two teams are still talking about working out a deal. Guardiola is an admirer of the player. Therefore, City added him to its summer transfer target list despite difficult negotiations with West Ham.</p>



<p>The Hammers lost Declan Rice to Arsenal earlier this summer. Understandably, the London club is hesitant to lose another talented player to a Premier League foe. The club is aware, however, that the midfielder has his sights set on Manchester City.</p>
