<p>ESPN+ has a hefty number of soccer games coming in June.</p>
<p>For most of the world, the summer months are time for <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/schedule-of-soccer-friendlies-in-us-this-summer/">friendlies</a> and international competitions. Of course, with the World Cup scheduled for November of this year rather than the summer, there might seem like even more of a void than usual. However, this is the first time in two years that the summer is open to frequent international travel. Therefore, there are club friendlies and international competitions going on again.</p>
<p>That being said, the international soccer schedule is jumbled up when it comes to providers and channels carrying certain teams or leagues. You can access <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/mWebq" rel="noopener" target="_blank">ESPN+ for $6.99 per month</a>. <p><strong>Here are some of the soccer games coming to ESPN+ in June:</strong></p>
<h3>International soccer</h3>
<h5>USMNT vs. Grenada – CONCACAF Nations League – Friday, June 10, 10 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>Looking at the notable games featuring on the streaming service this month, the highlight comes from the USMNT. As the United States looks to defend its CONCACAF Nations League title, it opens the competition against Grenada on June 10. Again, that game is exclusive to ESPN+ in the United States.</p>
<h5>Girona vs. Tenerife – LaLiga Playoff Final First Leg – Saturday, June 11, 3 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>ESPN’s acquisition of LaLiga prior to the 2021/22 season, the focus rested on Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. In the United States, the promotion and relegation battle from the second tier does not take center stage. However, the drama and intrigue of promotion for Spanish sides is always something to follow. Over two legs, Tenerife and Girona will play for promotion into Spain’s top flight.</p>
<h5>Tenerife vs. Girona – LaLiga Playoff Final Second Leg – Sunday, June 19, 3 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>The second leg of this tie comes a full nine days after the first. This is based on aggregate score. Away goals rule is in effect for this playoff, with extra time and penalties also in effect when tied.</p>
<h3>Domestic Leagues</h3>
<p>There are three leagues that feature from the United States on the ESPN+ soccer schedule in June. Major League Soccer, USL Championship and USL League One all have soccer games on ESPN+ in June. Here are some of the highlights from that schedule.</p>
<h5>Miami FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies – USL Championship – Saturday, June 11, 7 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>This is becoming something of a rivalry in the development of soccer in Florida. Both clubs may take a backseat to their MLS counterparts in terms of popularity. However, battles in the US Open Cup and now a continued rivalry in the USL Championship reignited this Florida derby.</p>
<h5>Detroit City FC vs. Sacramento Republic FC – USL League One – Saturday, June 11, 7:30 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>If there is one team to keep an eye on from USL League One, it is Detroit City FC. The club has one of the strongest followings from an American club outside of Major League Soccer. Plus, the club can clearly put some success together. While out of the US Open Cup, Detroit City eliminated MLS side Columbus Crew in the third round.</p>
<h5>NYCFC vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS – Sunday, June 19, 5 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>Looking at the 2021 season, these two clearly had success. NYCFC lifted its first MLS Cup, while Colorado finished top of the Western Conference. Playoff success did not come, but that may not be the case this year. Colorado is off to a slower start approaching the halfway point in the season. Meanwhile, NYCFC tops the Eastern Conference.</p>
<h5>Charlotte FC vs. Austin FC – MLS – Thursday, June 30, 7 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>The two newest sides in Major League Soccer have passionate fan bases. Plus, they both exhibit some success at the turn of the season. Playoffs are well in the discussion for both teams, giving this game an extra edge from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.</p>
<h3>US Open Cup</h3>
<p>Finally, one major competition airing on ESPN+ in June is the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/us-open-cup-tv-schedule/">US Open Cup</a>. This tournament includes all clubs in the United States from Major League Soccer to amateur teams affiliated with US Soccer.</p>
<p>Currently, the competition is in the quarterfinals.</p>
<h5>LA Galaxy vs. Sacramento Republic FC – Tuesday, June 21, 10:30 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>Sacramento is the only USL Championship side remaining in the competition. It travels to the two-time winners of the competition in the quarterfinals.</p>
<h5>New York Red Bulls vs. NYCFC – Wednesday, June 22, 8 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>A New York derby with a chance to reach the semifinals of the US Open Cup. Both clubs seek their first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup trophy win.</p>
<h5>Sporting KC vs. Union Omaha – Wednesday, June 22, 8:30 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>Another underdog story, Union Omaha is the lowest team remaining in the American soccer pyramid. The USL League One side takes on the most successful side in the tournament’s history that is still active and operational.</p>
<h5>Orlando City vs. Nashville SC – Wednesday, June 29, 7 p.m. ET</h5>
<p>Another all-MLS battle from relatively new clubs. The winner is the last club to qualify for the semifinals of the tournament.</p>


In June, there is plenty of international soccer to follow on ESPN+. While the games may not mean as much, there is still competitive action.

<p>Much like attendance, the USMNT TV ratings in 2021 gauge the popularity and growth of soccer in the country.</p>
<p>Ratings for the Premier League and the Champions League grew over recent years. Consequently, soccer found its niche in the diverse American sporting landscape.</p>
<p>However, the USMNT TV ratings always seemed to fluctuate depending on a variety of factors. That is, unsurprisingly, things such as team form, opponent, the competition among other things.</p>
<p>As was the case with <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/12/23/usmnt-annual-attendance-show-8-increase-since-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">crowds at games</a>, TV ratings for the US were almost non-existent in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly hampered the consistency and availability of games. Then, 2021 saw viewers start to tune back in as the US started to rack up the wins and accumulate some hardware. As you see below, it is important to account for English- and Spanish-language coverage of the team. The diversity of the nation is not catered to by just one language.</p>
<h3>USMNT TV Ratings in 2021</h3>
<h5>Friendlies</h5>
<p>Friendlies come throughout the year, with the bulk of these coming at the start. The USMNT wrapped up its 2022 schedule in December against Bosnia &amp; Herzegovina ahead of World Cup Qualifying in January.</p>
<p>Spanish-language viewing figures for the friendlies against Trinidad &amp; Tobago, Jamaica, and Switzerland are unavailable.</p>

<h3>Breaking down the numbers</h3>
<p>Many of these comparisons go against the previous year to see development. Based on the state of the world in 2020, that may not be fair. Therefore, comparisons to 2019 may seem more applicable to gauge the sport, and the USMNT’s, improvement of fallbacks.</p>
<p>In 2021, the USMNT averaged 745,625 viewers per game on English-language TV. This number represents an increase of 294% compared to 2020. However, that year, the USMNT played just three games, pulling in 189,333 viewers per game. More accurately, it marks a 1% increase of the ratings for 2019. That year, the US played 18 games on English TV. Additionally, this is the highest average since 2017, also the year before a World Cup. In 2017, the USMNT TV ratings averaged 819,842 throughout its 19 games.</p>
<p>For Spanish-language TV, an average of 1,061,421 viewers tuned in to the USMNT games this year. This is an astounding increase of 378% over a two-game average of 222,000 in 2020. But, again, the better comparison would be to 2019. This past year’s average Spanish viewership was an increase of 8% over an 18-game average of 981,556 back in 2019. And, just like the English viewing figures, 2021 was the best year for the USMNT on Spanish TV since 2017. An average of 1,138,579 watched the 19 games in that year.</p>
<p>At the end of the year, the total combined audience came out to 32,096,000. Over the 22 games, the average English- and Spanish-language audience came out to 1,528,381. On one hand, this is a stark 504% increase in average viewership compared to 2020. However, it is a surprising dip of 18% when compared to the average of 1,858,556 in 2019.</p>

<p>Fans and critics alike use attendance as the barometer for popularity of soccer in the United States.</p>
<p>On one hand, supporters of the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/12/23/usmnt-annual-attendance-show-8-increase-since-2019/#comments" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USMNT</a> decry the falling attendance numbers of recent years. On the other, the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/12/27/uswnt-attendance-in-2021-dips-due-to-covid-lack-of-success/#comments" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USWNT</a> points out its consistent gains in attendance throughout various lawsuits against US Soccer. Of course, these both flipped in 2021, and much of that comes from the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>
<p>A myriad of MLS clubs trumpet the large crowds drawn in recent seasons. Again, this applies mainly to American teams.</p>
<p>One team that does not tout attendance numbers is the Mexican National Team. The nation frequently draw so well that the numbers speak for themselves. In fact, there have been several articles in the past written going so far as to call El Tri “America’s Team.” From a purely people-in-seats perspective, there’s really no argument against it.</p>
<h3>Mexico attendance in 2021</h3>
<p>The majority of Mexico’s games happened in the United States. Whether that be because of COVID-19 restrictions or a pair of competitions, the Mexicans only played two games in their native country that actually had fans in attendance. Those two games came in World Cup Qualifiers within four days of each other at the Azteca.</p>
<p>Regardless, the following attendance chart shows the Mexican games played in the United States. Some of these are ‘neutral site’ games, while others do feature the USMNT. Inherently, that makes it a home game for the Americans, but we know how well the Mexico fans travel when the two countries play.</p>

<h5>Breaking it down</h5>
<p>Mexico’s attendance in 2021 averaged 44,213, which seems like a strong number compared to either of the US national teams. However, it is actually quite low for the Mexicans. In fact, it marks the lowest attendance for Mexico games in the US since 2017. That year, the nation drew just 43,586 per game through 10 games. 2021’s average of 44,213 represents a drop of 23% from 57,546 per game in 2019. Mexico did not play any games in the United States in 2020 due to COVID shutdowns.</p>
<p>So, what caused this large drop of attendance for Mexico games? Well, as was the case for both the USMNT and the USWNT, some games had COVID-related restrictions on capacity in place. It’s a safe bet to assume that the Nations League Final between Mexico and the US would certainly have drawn <a href="https:\/\/www.concacaf.com/nations-league/article/denver-to-host-first-ever-concacaf-nations-league-finals-in-june-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 37,000 people</a> had the stadium been able to fully open up. And much as the USMNT and USWNT had to deal with, Mexico ran into the problem of playing consecutive games in the same stadium in the space of a few days during the Gold Cup. And one small nugget is Mexico playing their last two games of the year in MLS stadiums, which is always going to drop the average attendance for Mexico given the much smaller size of those particular stadiums.</p>
