Initially, UEFA scheduled the 13th edition of the UEFA Women’s Championship for 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the tournament back to the following summer in 2022. As a result, this is the longest gap between Women’s Euros in the tournament’s history.

Records in Past Tournaments

In the 12-year history of the competition, Germany is, by far, the most successful team. The German women have eight tournament wins, including a run of seven-consecutive wins from 1995 to 2013. However, the Netherlands stopped the German reign in 2017. This Netherlands side also finished runner-up in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Other champions include Norway in 1987 and 1993 and Sweden, which one the inaugural tournament in 1984.

In addition to the past champions, England, France and Spain are all contenders for the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euros. These teams feature some of the best women’s players in the world.

For Spain, Alexia Putellas is the defending Ballon d’Or winner. She, along with fellow Spanish teammate Jenni, helped Barcelona to its first UEFA Women’s Champions League a season ago. Now, Barcelona won every game so far in all competitions.

Other key players to feature include Arsenal’s prolific goalscorer Vivianne Miedema for the Netherlands. Also, Manchester City’s Lucy Bronze looks to make an impact in her home country of England.

England as the host

England hosts the competition for the first time since 2005. There are 10 different stadiums in use for the tournament spanning just under a month in July. The biggest of the stadiums are Old Trafford in Manchester, which hosts the opening game between England and Austria. Then, Wembley Stadium in London hosts the Final.

A recent report claimed that ticket sales in England for the Women’s Euros are through the roof. As of March 28, UEFA announced that they already sold over 300,000 total tickets for the upcoming matches. This number already sets the record for the most tickets sold to a Women’s Euro tournament. The previous record was in 2017 with just over 240,000 tickets sold. With three months still remaining before the first match, ticket sales are expected to increase even more heading into the tournament.

Russia in the Euros

One particularly interesting storyline coming out of the upcoming women’s tournament revolves around the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Although previously qualified, UEFA banned Russia from the Women’s Euros. The same applies to many Russian sports teams. For instance, UEFA banned the men’s team from the playoff stage of FIFA World Cup qualifying.

UEFA is yet to make a decision on a replacement team for Russia in the competition. One potential candidate is Portugal. Russia beat Portugal by an aggregate score of 1-0 to qualify for the tournament. Scotland, however, could also be considered, as they are the highest-ranked European side not currently participating in the Women’s Euros.

In the United States, ESPN holds the rights to the competition. As part of its coverage, an ESPN spokesperson told World Soccer Talk it will broadcast all 31 games.
