Glenn Davis and Alexi Lalas were the commentators for Red Star vs Arsenal.

(Davis wisely chose to pronounce Crvena Zvezda “Red Star”, which is correct.)

Davis should be the #4 pxp announcer for FOX Sports during FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, calling matches OFF MONITOR from Los Angeles.

(The #5 and #6 pxp announcers appear to be Mark Followill and Mark Rogondino. Not making the cut: Keith Costigan, Ross Fletcher, Ross Dyer, and Ian Joy because EP David Neal does not want British accents. Reporter Jenny Taft appears to have been cut as well as FOX already has Maria Komondnaya, Francisco X. Rivera, and Grant Wahl available as touchline reporters and Jenny Taft won’t be needed to cover the USMNT. )

Glenn Davis has toned down his pxp commentary over the years. Less yelling. Less overselling. Less verbiage. He still has a lot of room for improvement even though he switched from co-comm to pxp 20 years ago (his primary pxp gig is with the MLS Houston Dynamo.)

Don’t know yet whether Davis will be paired with fellow Houston-area resident Stuart Holden (who may have been moved off the planned 3-man #1 team with John Strong and Landon Donovan, as FOX no longer has a need for a 3-man #1 team now that the USMNT will be staying home), Cobi Jones (who was definitely moved the planned #3 team with Jorge Perez-Navarro to make room for Mariano Trujillo), Tony Meola, or Brian Dunseth.

Either Meola or Dunseth may not make the cut if FOX decides to move Holden from the #1 to the #4 team.

I actually like Davis and Holden as a team. If FOX really wants to save travel cost, then Davis and Holden can call matches off monitor from a sound booth at FOX Cable Technical Operations Center in The Woodlands, Texas instead of Los Angeles. No hotel cost necessary for either one, as they can live at home during the World Cup.

The #2 team is all set: JP DellaCamera and Brad Friedel will be in Russia (at least for the quarterfinals and the semifinals; they can work from LA during the Group Stage through the Round of 16) from the Group Stage at least through Semifinal #1, with the possibility of Aly Wagner being assigned to mop up as the co-comm for the 3rd place match only (off monitor from the IBC in Moscow.) At this point, Wagner will call either ZERO or ONE match, with the 3rd place match being the only match that would fit her history as a player.

Lalas and Wagner will form the core of the pre-match/half-time/post-match studio shows (hosted by Rob Stone) as well as the World Cup Tonight “infotainment” shows hosted by Fernando “El Presidente” Fiore.

Eric Wynalda will be kept away from Lalas (the two absolutely do not like each other) and will likely be quarantined to the morning show (to be hosted by Kate Abdo).

You should go out and get laid or something.

Take us all to the beginning, how does one create a fantasy life involving soccer broadcasters?

I don’t know about all this, but if the coverage of the World Cup is anything like it was for the Arsenal game today with Davis and Lalas, then I (and probably a lot of others) will do just what I did during the game today: turn it off on my 50-inch TV and instead watch a mediocre stream on my laptop with a commentator who knows what the hell is happening.

I will say that Costigan and Friedel were much better for the Everton-Lyon game–prepared and knowledgable about the players and the situation surrounding the Everton team this season.

Telemundo will have 56 World Cup matches free-to-air (8 overflow matches will air on Universo) with excellent commentary especially from its #1 team of Andres Cantor and Manuel Sol. The lead studio pundit at Telemundo Deportes, Carlos Hermosillo, is not afraid to speak his mind.

Telemundo Deportes’ commentary lineup for World Cup 2018:

#1 Andres Cantor and Manuel Sol
        #2 Sammy Sadovnik and TBD
        #3 Copan Alvarez and TBD

Moscow studio: Miguel Gurwitz and Carlos Hermosillo

Morning and late night studio show hosts: Ana Flores de Jurka, Leti Coo

Don’t know yet how Frederik Oldenburg, Kaziro Aoyama (he is Mexican of Japanese descent), and other reporters will be deployed.

The “big name” host Telemundo Deportes will borrow from Telemundo’s news division is Puerto Rican news anchor/host Maria Celeste Arraras.

This broadcast of the Arsenal game has been an embarrassment for Fox Sports. The amount of misidentification of players and mispronunciation of names is like nothing I’ve ever seen before, and I’ve watched the Europa League over the years!
