Yangon (AFP) – A late goal by Nguyen Trong Hoang gave Vietnam a narrow victory over Malaysia in the Suzuki Cup on Wednesday, thrusting his side into the semi-finals.

The forward, a rising star in Vietnam’s domestic league, secured his country’s second win in three days on 80 minutes when he danced between two Malaysian defenders to slot home.

His goal was just rewards for an impressive performance and puts Vietnam at the top of Group B with six points.

They are assured of a semi-final place and a draw against group whipping boys Cambodia will see them advance in top spot.

In Wednesday’s late game co-hosts Myanmar came from a goal down to beat Cambodia 3-1.

It was a must-win match for Myanmar that thrilled a packed Thuwanna stadium in Yangon, who roared the home team on after the visiting Cambodians took a surprise early lead.

Myanmar’s win sets up a thrilling final group game against Malaysia on Saturday.

Both teams have three points but Malaysia has to win to advance to the semis as Myanmar enjoys a better goal difference.

In Group A’s Tuesday ties, Thailand secured a place in the last four after beating Singapore 1-0 in Manila.
