Manchester United are close to an agreement which will see Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan join the English club in the summer, according to numerous reports from Germany.

News of the pending deal first broke earlier this morning and has been gaining steam all afternoon.

It now appears United are in the process of finalizing a deal which will see the German international become their first signing of the summer.

Gundogan’s current deal with Dortmund expires in June 2016, and the Bundesliga club is looking to avoid a repeat of the situation which saw striker Robert Lewandowski leave for free.

In recent months, Gundogan has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Liverpool. However, it now appears the 24-year-old midfielder will be trading the Westfalenstadion for Old Trafford next season.

Sky Sports Germany is reporting the deal will be finalized this weekend.

United manager Louis van Gaal remained tight-lipped about transfers during his pre-match press conference earlier today when he was asked about the rumors involving PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay.

“I don’t discuss it with the media,” Van Gaal said. “I have a lot of relationships with players. I can’t buy all the players I’ve coached.”

If today’s stories are correct, the Dutch manager has quite the poker face.
