Swansea boss Garry Monk insisted Bafetimbi Gomis is unstoppable after the striker's late winner at Aston Villa.

The forward pounced with just three minutes left to seal a 1-0 victory and leave the Swans eighth in the Barclays Premier League.

It was his first strike since collapsing at Tottenham earlier this month – the result of a vasovagal condition which causes low blood pressure – and Monk believes the six-goal striker has fully recovered.

He said: "He's fine like we said at the time, of course it's a concern but we understand his situation and you've seen from the last two performances there's no stopping him. His work rate is incredible.

"Yes he'll be disappointed he didn't take early chances but he kept pushing and got his goal in the end. He deserved that and it will give him confidence.

"A lot of people can get upset and lose concentration but they are very focused players. There were some big performances out there from us."

Swansea are 11 points adrift of the European spots but Monk insisted they will not let their season end quietly.

He said: "In the first half we were fantastic, we created some good chances. The second half was much more even with both teams pushing and fighting.

"When you consider we were away from home, with a big, expectant crowd and a confident Aston Villa team, I thought we dealt with that well. Overall we deserved that.

"A lot of people will be questioning what we have to play for – we're not going to get relegated and we're not fighting for Europe – but that showed the character, focus and spirit in the squad that we continue to fight and push. We did that very well in the second half."

Defeat left Villa three points above the relegation zone and boss Tim Sherwood rued the late loss.

"That's the second time it's happened now, against Stoke in my first game it was a little later but it was disappointing to lose in that manner," he said.

"I think we deserved a point. They were better than us in the first period and in the second we looked the most likely to score.

"There comes a time in the game where, if you're looking like not winning it, you have to make sure you don't lose it. Unfortunately we've done that twice now.

"It was a good break and they have done us with pace, it was a race to the ball in the middle and Gomis beat us to it.

"It's a set-back but we'll pick ourselves up, we'll be all right."

Christian Benteke was forced off with a hip injury and he will be assessed to see if he can join up with Belgium ahead of the international break.

"In the end he had to come off because it was too sore to continue. It's a concern," said Sherwood.

"The concern is more in the defensive areas because we have two fit defenders in the whole club. I hope this international break gives the opportunity for the physios to work some magic on them."
