Lyon Join the Chase to Try To Sign USA World Cup Star DeAndre Yedlin

Ligue Un side Olympique Lyonnais has joined the chase for Seattle Sounders and USA defender DeAndre Yedlin, according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

Major League Soccer has already received multiple offers for the player who impressed during the 2014 World Cup. Yedlin set up the go-ahead goal for the United States in the 2-2 Group Stage draw with Portugal and tightly marked Eden Hazard out of the Round 16 match against Belgium, which the United States ultimately lost 2-1 after extra time.

Last week, it was reported that Serie A giants AS Roma were close to securing a transfer for Yedlin. That potential reportedly involved Roma loaning Yedlin back to Seattle and then potentially moving him on loan to another Italian club after the MLS season came to a conclusion.

Several reports surfaced that Yedlin was potentially going to sign with Liverpool. However, it appears the Reds have not made a formal offer for the player. Serie A side Genoa has also made a formal offer for Yedlin according to published reports.

Yedlin was a controversial inclusion in the United States World Cup squad. Having never been capped for the senior team prior to this calendar year, the player impressed manager Jurgen Klinsmann enough to warrant a spot on the squad ahead of Sounders teammate Brad Evans who was a mainstay during World Cup Qualifying.

During the World Cup, Yedlin demonstrated an ability to play in a wide midfield role as well as a lockdown man-marking right-back. The player also showed a tactical awareness and understanding that is rare among younger American-born defenders.

Several US National Team players are linked with moves to Europe including Matt Besler’s potential move to Freiburg  of the Bundesliga. Several other MLS-based American players have been linked with potential moves abroad including Graham Zusi and 32 year-old Kyle Beckerman who played every minute for the United States during the group stage.
