Clint Dempsey is turning his back on Tottenham Hotspur, and looks set to agree a deal to return to Major League Soccer and be allocated to Seattle Sounders. The transfer deal is reported to be £6million, while Dempsey will be on wages of £100,000 a week making him one of the most expensive players in league history, according to Richard Farley of Pro Soccer Talk.
NBC’s Pro Soccer Talk has confirmed that Dempsey is heading to Seattle after speaking with sources within the club.
While it’s a massive coup for MLS and Seattle Sounders to sign Dempsey, in a deal that may be wrapped up as early as this weekend, it’s shocking news that Dempsey is looking to hang up his Premier League boots when the American international still has so much to offer in England. Even if he was on his way out of Tottenham, there would be other Premier League sides interested in signing the Texas native.

Most likely he’ll use the ‘good to be back home with family’ and will state that the ‘MLS is a tremendous league’ reasons when in fact he wasn’t good enough in a top six club. MLS will love him and he’ll love the ‘big fish in a little pond’ adoration.

But I do wonder if there is something more here. Perhaps it is for family reasons.
It is a shame, though. He’s always battled to prove himself and challenge himself. So to see him come back to MLS in basically the prime of his career seems odd.
The US’ two best players have now opted not to play against far better competition in better leagues (and I say this as a longtime MLS supporter) when they can. That’s disappointing.

In all my years watching sports, this is the strangest offseason event I can recall. It makes zero sense from my perspective. Dempsey can come back to MLS when he is 34 like everyone else. I never ever saw this coming, although I echo the sentiment that he should have stayed at Fulham.

Also, he’s not turning his back on Tottenham — they transfer listed him, didn’t they?

I don’t know if it’s a good move for Dempsey, but it’s a GREAT move for the Sounders, he’s exactly what they need. It’s good for MLS and US Soccer too.

Klinsmann is telling him where to play.
The only EPL team that made sense was West Brom and they have no money.

I’m pretty shocked by this one. He is still in the prime of his career and whether it was at Spurs or elsewhere he could still be in the first 11 of an above average Prem side.
Its not like he is going to play for his hometown club, and while he will make nice money its not more than he would’ve made in England.
Very wierd but I wish him the best.

He was on less than £55k a week at Fulham. He probably got that sort of money at Totenham, but I can’t see too many clubs paying £100k for him.

So, last year he needed Champions League football. I guess he forgot to stipulate that it was the CONCACAF Champions League.
This is a mistake.

Will “the truth” come out about why he signed with Seattle?
