Midweek fixtures gave La Liga a very Copa Libertadores-like schedule as Spain’s stars continue to make their moves towards either a championship, UEFA competition spot, or another season in La Liga De Estrellas
. The drama began on Tuesday when Real Madrid looked beaten against Getafe down 2-1 and a man down after Pepe’s well-deserved red card. However, the worst PK ever from Getafe’s Francisco Casquero, an 86th minute free-kick goal from Guti and a 93rd minute strike from Gonzalo Higuaín gave Los Merengues a thrilling 3-2 win and allowed them to keep pace with Barcelona.

La Blaugrana destroyed 3rd place Sevilla 4-0 at the Camp Nou as The Catalans rested Lionel Messi & Carles Puyol but they had a front seat to the Andres Iniesta show.  The under appreciated midfielder scored a Golazo to open the scoring and carved Sevilla’s defense in aiding the other 3 goals.

Valencia continued its strong late season run with a tough 2-1 road win versus Real Betis. Star striker David Villa added 2 more goals to his tally in his quest for the Pichichi. The victory was the 5th in a row for Los Che and put them just 2 points behind Sevilla.

The shock result of the fixtures was the 5-1 thrashing of Atlético Madrid at the hands of Racing Santander. Los Colchoneros erratic play continues to baffle its supporters. It was 3-0 before Diego Forlán’s PK ended Racinguistas bid for a clean sheet. The loss dropped Atlético Madrid out of a European spot by moving them into 7th place.
