Abreu Arrives At Sociedad Amid Controversy In Argentina

Uruguayan international Sebastián Abreu left River Plate yet once again. Friday afternoon ¨El Loco¨ met with club officials telling them that he had accepted an offer to go play with Spanish second division side Real Sociedad.

The news broke out Friday evening around 7pm (local time). The news came as a shock to the River Plate fans as they were the club that came to his rescue when things did not go well when he left for Beitar Jerusalem. Abreu was part of the club the won the Clausura title in the first half of 2008.

According to sources, Abreu did not appear at the airport in Mendoza as River Plate prepared for their summer pre-season training in preparation for the Clausura tournament. Now River Plate officials are looking to block this impending move to Spain if Abreu does not bring them back a significant amount of money that the club spent to bring him to Argentina twice.

The ecomically strapped Sociedad are among one of the lowest scoring sides in the Spanish second division and coach Juan Manuel Lillo asked for Abreu since he was familiar with the Uruguayan international during his days with Mexican side Dorados de Sinaloa.

Real Sociedad are currently in seventh place in second division, but are only five points away from the top spot being held by Salamanca.  They are making every effort to have a second-half push that would have them return to first division after being in second for two years.  Sociedad was in first division for 40 years before being relegated back in 2007.
