<p>Athletic Club finally broke their trophy drought 40 years after a grueling 120 minutes of play against a resolute Mallorca. The winner was decided in a penalty shootout.</p>



<p>In the 21st minute, Dani Rodriguez put <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/mallorca-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers">Mallorca</a> ahead in front of a packed La Cartuja, but <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/athletic-bilbao-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers">Athletic</a> tied just after halftime thanks to Oihan Sancet. </p>



<p>The one bright light for Bilbao in the first half was Nico Williams, who hit the crossbar once and once shot into the side net.</p>



<p>Therefore, it came as no surprise when he helped set up the equalizer in the second half’s nick of time. </p>



<p>Despite Athletic’s best efforts, the Pirates’ dogged defense prevented them from scoring again. Thus, without any further goals, the match went into overtime and then to penalty kicks.</p>



<p>As soon as the game went into penalties, the Mallorcan players rejoiced as if they had won. After all that resistance, they suddenly claimed to be immune to spot kicks—but they were mistaken.</p>



<h2>How did both teams fare during penalties?</h2>



<p>The 2003 <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/copa-del-rey-tv-schedule">Copa del Rey</a> was Mallorca’s sole previous title, and they were trying to add another one. On their behalf, Vedat Muriqi scored the first penalty kick. Unfortunately, it seemed unfair that he was the one who ended up on the losing end.</p>

<p>Athletic, meanwhile, scored four goals in a row thanks to penalty kicks that were executed flawlessly. Ernesto Valverde, a former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a> manager, has guided the team to great success this season. </p>



<p>This victory would cap off an impressive campaign in which they are battling for a spot in La Liga’s top four.</p>



<p>For Athletic, Raul Garcia scored a goal and they maintained the score tied when Julen Agirrezabala stopped a kick by Manu Morlanes. Then, Iker Muniain put the Basque side in the lead, as Nemajnja Radonjic failed to convert his kick. </p>



<p>Later, despite falling, Mikel Vesga managed to find the back of the goal with his shot, followed by Antonio Sanchez who scored to keep Mallorca in the game. The trophy, however, went to Athletic when Alex Berenguer buried his.</p>



<p>Thus, in their 40th appearance in the Spanish Cup final, Athletic finally achieved their long-awaited goal. They have had to wait a long time for their triumph, most recently losing twice in a row in 2020 and 2021.</p>



<p>Athletic, the fourth-oldest club in Spain, has a distinctive concept of only playing players of Basque ancestry. They are the second-highest title winners, having won the competition 31 times. </p>



<h2>Mallorca congratulate their opponents</h2>



<p>Ending their 40-year drought, fans celebrated the team’s 24th Copa del Rey triumph and the first since 1984. </p>



<p>Since 2012, when they lost the Europa League final against Atletico Madrid, Athletic have endured years of heartbreak. They had previously lost six straight Spanish Cup finals.</p>



<p>Bilbao are one of three Spanish clubs—along with Real Madrid and Barcelona—that have never been relegated. “The first thing I have to do is to congratulate Athletic and its fans. They have been waiting a long time for this.</p>



<p>“I am moved because I am very proud of my teammates and our supporters who accompanied us. Our dream was to win this cup. We tried to, but it wasn’t to be”, said Mallorca’s only scorer, <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/report/_/gameId/699336" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rodriguez after their defeat.</a></p>

<p>Real Club Deportivo Mallorca was founded in March 1916, as “Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club”. The club is the only major Spanish outfit based on the Balearic Islands, located in the Mediterranean Sea east of mainland Spain.</p>



<p>The first game was against FC Barcelona, a humbling 8-0 loss. Shortly after, the king of Spain himself requested that they add “Real” to the title, resulting in the name “Real Sociedad Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club”. </p>



<p>In the 1930s, in the lead up to civil war when references to the monarchy were forbidden, the club changed its name to Club Deportivo Mallorca. “Real” was added back in 1949, resulting in the full name of the club we know today.</p>



<p>The club reached the national first tier for the first time in 1960. Up until the mid-1980s, participation in La Liga was sporadic at best. It wasn’t until the mid-90s that a sustained period of first division football was achieved. This came on the heels of the club’s first appearance in the Copa del Rey final in 1991. </p>



<p>Mallorca would be runner up in the tournament again in 1998, before winning the cup in 2003. This remains the club’s highest achievement. </p>



<p>The 2010s saw a downturn, with a relegation in 2013, and a trip to the third tier in 2017. But the 2020s have been kinder, with 4/5 seasons in the top flight from 2019/20 to 2023/24.</p>



<p>The Estadi Mallorca Son Moix is the largest stadium in the Balearic Islands at 23,142 seats, and was built in 1999. </p>

<p>The result means that the reigning Champions remain five points behind league leader Barcelona by 5 points having played an extra game.</p>

<p>Carlo Ancelotti’s side came into the game with several players missing due to injuries. In defense, Eder Militao and Ferland Mendy were absent while up front Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard, and Lucas Vasquez also missed the trip to the Balearic coast. </p>



<h5>Real Mardrid go behind</h5>



<p>The Los Blancos fell behind in the 13<sup>th</sup> minute when Vedat Muriqi’s looping header deflected off Nacho to roll into the back of the net.</p>



<p>Real hardly recovered following the setback and Mallorca’s stoic defending meant that the away side could hardly gather any momentum on the pitch. </p>



<p>The hosts boosted by the early goal made it almost impossible for their opponents by fighting and scrapping for every loose bill in the middle of the park and keeping Real at bay. </p>



<p>Both sides committed several fouls and the Rojiblancos looked out of ideas as they went in search of an equalizer.</p>

<p>Fifteen minutes into the second half, Real were handed a lifeline as they earned a penalty after Mallorca goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic clipped Vinicus Jr in the box. </p>



<p>Rajkovic, however, redeemed himself as he saved Marco Asensio’s poorly taken spot kick preserving his side’s lead on the day.</p>



<p>With just six minutes remaining, Eduardo Camavinga’s left-footed effort from outside the box went way over the Mallorca goal. </p>



<p>Two minutes later, the away side missed a golden opportunity as Mariano’s right-footed effort from David Alaba’s cross went just over the bar. </p>



<p>Despite the late pressure from Real and eight minutes of stoppage time, Mallorca held on for a huge win. </p>



<h5>Impact on the table</h5>



<p>The results sees them sitting in tenth in the league standings with 28 points from 20 games.</p>



<p>Ancelotti’s side will now travel to the Club World Cup where they <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/seattle-sounders-succumb-late-to-al-ahly-in-club-world-cup-20230204-WST-418627.html">take on Egyptian side Al Ahly</a> in the <a href="https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/articles/fifa-club-world-cup-morocco-2022-dates-teams-draw-matches-venues" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Club World Cup semi-final. </a></p>



<p>However, by the time they return to play Elche in La Liga, Barcelona could go 8 points should they beat Sevilla later on Sunday evening at the Nou Camp.</p>
