<p>Both England and the United States men’s national team are in a state of flux with interim coaches in the form of Lee Carsley and Mikey Varas. With Carsley, England won its <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/biggest-storylines-from-uefa-nations-league-weekend/">Nations League opener</a> against Ireland on the back of several changes, both tactically and among the squad. </p>



<p>It was a radically different approach from Varas, the interim head coach of the USMNT. Varas stuck to largely the same squad and many of the same tactics as former coach Gregg Berhalter. The results did not change either, as the USMNT fell at home in a friendly against Canada, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hLaUTH5Ew8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2-1</a>. Meanwhile, England outmatched Ireland with a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTK5hRSZe8I" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2-0 win</a>.</p>



<p>The results and performances may be insignificant in the grand scheme of the two national teams as both await a new permanent head coach. Yet, it speaks volumes about where the two sides go over the coming months. On a Monday morning press conference, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/who-is-mikey-varas-usas-interim-head-coach/">Mikey Varas</a> spoke about the lack of changes he made in the loss against Canada. He said, as an interim coach, it is not his job to introduce radical changes to the side. In his view, he may contradict the incoming head coach.</p>



<p>“First of all, as interim coach, your job is to not change everything so there needs to be continuity. At the same time, there were definitely nuances that were different from an ideas perspective (compared to how the team played at Copa America). [For example] we didn’t hit a single goal kick long in the entire game. Zero.” </p>



<p>“I think there were some differences, and ultimately, we were all disappointed by the first half especially, and the result. But it’s a work in progress. We’re trying to get better every day.”</p>

<h2>Varas struggles, but Carsley shows the potential of interim coaches</h2>



<p>Mikey Varas should not be the one to blame for where the USMNT currently stands. However, given that this game was a friendly, and the United States has limited time before the World Cup in 2026, it would be beneficial to see some experimentation in the squad. That is what happened with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/carsley-to-be-englands-interim-coach-through-autumn/">Lee Carsley</a> and the England national team at the weekend. Carsley introduced several changes to the Three Lions for this game against Ireland. The most notable of which was reintroducing Jack Grealish in the starting XI. Gareth Southgate previously omitted the Manchester City winger from his squad at Euro 2024. That decision immediately paid off.</p>



<p>Grealish scored England’s second goal and was one of the side’s best players on the day. Carsley also changed the role of Anthony Gordon, making the Newcastle star an out-and-out left winger. Harry Kane thus dropped deeper into the midfield. Likewise, Carsley afforded Trent Alexander-Arnold more freedom, and the Liverpool star was active as a creative threat for England.</p>



<p>Former England striker Gary Lineker said each of these things answered questions that fans asked of Southgate.</p>



<p>“It’s interesting as well, isn’t it, that perhaps some of the things fans were most disappointed about in the Euros, well, probably three things maybe more,” Lineker said. “But everyone wanted Anthony Gordon to play on the left because we all saw a weakness and an unbalance on that side. And also, that he can run behind players because Kane likes to come short, and you’ve got to have a threat behind, so he did that.”</p>

<p>“The other thing was [Southgate] left Jack Grealish out of the squad which a lot of people were bemused by, and he’s come in and performed really well. And obviously, he never really trusted Trent Alexander-Arnold. In the first game Carsley has come up with all these things and a lot of us are going ‘You see? We told you.’”</p>



<h2>Setting up the future of the sides</h2>



<p>The attack-minded performance of Carsley, in which he effectively pulled the handbrake on what everyone knows is a talented side, gives the incoming head coach something to work with. The replacement knows Southgate’s pragmatic coaching style can lead to success. Now, he sees the potential of otherwise overlooked players.</p>



<p>By comparison, Mauricio Pochettino, the incoming head coach of the USMNT, would have failed to learn anything from Mikey Varas. An uninspired performance against Jesse Marsch’s Canada did not test anything or move players to new positions. Malik Tillman and Jonny Cardoso were the only changes, and they were forced because of injuries to other players in the midfield. Regardless, the onus remains on Pochettino to figure out the successful formula within the USMNT ranks.</p>

<p>England interim boss Lee Carsley has named his first squad for two upcoming UEFA Nations League games, with Noni Madueke making most of the headlines for England.</p>



<p>The former England U21 manager was temporarily called into the role after Gareth Southgate stepped away from the team. Southgate was at the helm for nearly eight years but failed to deliver a trophy.</p>



<p>Carsley unsurprisingly selected many regular heavy hitters in his first <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> national team roster. Standouts such as Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice were among the stars named in the squad. Nevertheless, the interim coach also made some interesting picks as well.</p>



<p>For instance, four players named in the squad have never earned a senior England cap before. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> winger <a href="https://www.instagram.com/nonzinoo10/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Noni Madueke</a> headlines this particular list. The attacker has started the 2024/25 campaign on fire with the Blues. He has already managed to score four goals in just two total appearances.</p>



<h2>Carsley previously coached new quartet with the U21 team</h2>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/nottingham-forest-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Nottingham Forest</a> star Morgan Gibbs-White, Lille’s Angel Gomes, and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/newcastle-united-tv-schedule/">Newcastle</a> defender Tino Livramento were also named in the team. Gibbs-White has become a breakout star since moving from Wolves to Forest in 2022. He racked up five goals and 10 assists in <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> play last season. The midfielder also recently scored his first goal of the 2024/25 campaign.</p>



<p>Gomes previously began his professional career with Manchester United. The midfielder, however, moved on to French side <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/lille-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Lille</a> in the summer of 2020 and has not looked back. Able to play in multiple positions in the middle of the pitch, Gomes racked up 10 total assists in all competitions last season. Unfortunately, he has missed the last few Lille matches with a head injury.</p>



<p>Livramento, on the other hand, has become the regular starting right-back for the Magpies under manager Eddie Howe. The versatile star is also capable of playing a plethora of other positions as well. In fact, the youngster featured at left-back and even out on the wing during the most recent campaign. All four of these new players to be named in the England squad previously worked under Carsley with the U21 team.</p>

<h2>Several Euro 2024 players cut from current England squad</h2>



<p>With new players entering the fray, several players had to be removed from the England team. Ivan Toney, Aaron Ramsdale, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, and Adam Wharton were all excluded from the most recent team that competed at Euro 2024. Injured duo Luke Shaw and Jude Bellingham also missed out on Carsley’s first squad.</p>



<p>Kieran Trippier was not included in the team as well. The veteran defender officially announced his retirement from the Three Lions on Thursday. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/arsenal-tv-schedule/">Arsenal</a> defender Ben White continues to opt not to be selected for the national team after a feud with previous management.</p>



<p>England is next set to begin their 2024/25 Nations League schedule against the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/ireland-national-team-tv-schedule/">Republic of Ireland</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/finland-national-team-tv-schedule/">Finland</a> in September. The Three Lions will then go on to face <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/greece-national-team-tv-schedule/">Greece</a> and Finland once again the following month.</p>

<p>The Football Association (FA) has officially announced that Lee Carsley will be the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> national team’s interim manager going forward. Carsley, 50, has been involved in England’s youth setup since 2020. He initially managed the U20s at this time, but has since taken over the U21s in the last three years. </p>



<p>England has needed a new boss after Gareth Southgate decided to step down from the role in July. The now former Three Lions manager reached the last two Euro finals, but failed to collect the trophy in both tournaments.</p>



<p>Carsley will now take over the helm on a temporary basis while the governing body continues their managerial search. The FA needed to make a decision as England has two UEFA Nations League fixtures scheduled in September. Carsley will now be on the sidelines for England’s games against the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/ireland-national-team-tv-schedule/">Republic of Ireland</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/finland-national-team-tv-schedule/">Finland</a> during this time.</p>



<p>Nevertheless, the former midfielder is likely to be in charge of the Three Lions for the remainder of 2024. The FA has stated that Carsley will remain in the role “throughout the autumn.” England is also set to face <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/greece-national-team-tv-schedule/">Greece</a> twice, and Finland and the Republic of Ireland once again before winter kicks in.</p>



<h2>Carsley gives FA solid short-term solution to England job</h2>

<p>The decision certainly makes sense for the Three Lions in the short term. First of all, Carsley is obviously familiar with many of the England national team players. Secondly, the team’s upcoming fixtures in the Nations League are also not exactly the most important games to be won. The competition was created as a way to avoid playing meaningless international friendlies.</p>



<p>FA chief Mark Bullingham touched on this first point when announcing the move. “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad, having worked with most at international or club level,” <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/live/c4gzlg47n0jt" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Bullingham.</p>



<p>“He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”</p>



<p>Bullingham recently asked the FA’s board to vote on whether or not he can <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/pochettino-tuchel-tipped-for-england-job-as-us-soccer-looks-on/">target a foreign coach</a> to permanently succeed Southgate. While there were some hesitations by select members, the board agreed to the proposal. The CEO’s decision to call for the vote suggests that he has an idea of who he wants to target.</p>



<h2>Coach’s first game will come against familiar opponents</h2>

<p>Interestingly enough, Carsley reportedly <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68113125" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rejected the chance</a> to manage the Republic of Ireland back in March. The former player previously earned 40 caps with the Boys in Green. While addressing the media after becoming the England interim coach, Carsley claimed that the talks were only casual. </p>



<p>“I went to speak to them. Really informal, enjoyable, for around an hour. It went no further,” said the coach. The Republic of Ireland eventually hired Heimir Hallgrímsson just last month. Carsley’s first match as England coach will now come away to the Republic of Ireland and he could face them once again in mid-November.</p>



<p>Along with having a familiarity with the England senior players, Carsley has also proven to be a solid manager. The coach led his previous squad to the European U21 Championship title after topping Spain in July of 2023. It was the team’s first trophy in the competition in nearly 40 years. The England U21s were led by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/newcastle-united-tv-schedule/">Newcastle</a> star Anthony Gordon, who collected the Player of the Tournament award.</p>

<p>In a significant development, Lee Carsley will reportedly be the interim manager of England following Gareth Southgate’s resignation. Carsley, who recently led the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/england-national-team-tv-schedule/">England</a> Under-21s to a historic victory in the 2023 European Championship, has emerged as the leading candidate to guide the national team; especially for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.</p>



<p><a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-euro/southgates-england-failing-wildly-to-live-up-to-hype/">Gareth Southgate</a> announced his resignation just days after the team’s heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Spain in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-european-championship-tv-schedule">Euro 2024</a> final. His tenure, which spanned eight years, was marked by considerable success; including a World Cup semi-final appearance in 2018 and two consecutive European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024. However, the inability to secure a major trophy, coupled with mounting criticism of his tactical decisions, ultimately led to his decision to step down.</p>



<p>The Football Association (FA) quickly moved to address the vacancy, initiating the process to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/england-could-hire-kieran-mckenna-to-replace-southgate/">find Southgate’s successor</a>. While the FA considered several high-profile names, including Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, the FA could lean towards an interim solution in the form of Lee Carsley, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/ckgj2rlpjwyo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BBC</a> and <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/13192396/lee-carsley-england-u21s-boss-in-line-to-take-interim-charge-of-england-senior-side-for-septembers-fixtures" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sky Sports</a> say. He is well-regarded within the English soccer community.</p>



<h2>Is Lee Carsley right man for interim role?</h2>

<p>Lee Carsley’s potential appointment as interim manager is not entirely surprising, given his recent achievements with the England Under-21s. Last year, Carsley guided the young Lions to their first European Championship title in nearly four decades; cementing his reputation as a capable and effective coach. His success at the youth level, coupled with his familiarity with the current crop of England players, makes him a logical choice to step into the senior role; at least temporarily.</p>



<p>Lee Carsley’s coaching journey has been marked by a series of caretaker roles at clubs such as Coventry City, Brentford, and Birmingham City; before he joined the FA in 2020. His experience at these clubs, combined with his success with the England youth teams, has equipped him with the skills necessary to manage at the highest level. Moreover, the transition from youth team coach to senior team manager is a well-trodden path at St. George’s Park, with Southgate, Stuart Pearce, and Howard Wilkinson all making similar moves in the past.</p>



<p>If appointed, Carsley will face immediate challenges as England prepares for crucial <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/uefa-nations-league-tv-schedule-and-links/">Nations League</a> matches. The team will play against the Republic of Ireland, Greece, and Finland next month; and the pressure will be on to deliver positive results. He is familiar with many of the younger players in the squad, having coached them at the Under-21 level. Thus, it could prove advantageous as he looks to integrate them into the senior setup.</p>
